Something that no one is talking about is how the inevitable ubiquitous use of high performance chips in AI could mean that electricity prices make EVs prohibitively expensive for most people in the coming years. I don't believe we have seen anything yet in terms of the cost of electricity. Electricity demand could become a real problem.

Oh a serious note, think of me an elderly lady with lung disease & immune issues going through all of that stress trying to charge an EV!!!... maybe in an isolated place, in the dark & rain..alone! I would be scared out of my life! It takes 5 minutes to fill up my diesel Mk7 Transit in a well lit, manned petrol forecourt .. & I don't even have to think about filling up for maybe 500 or 600 miles. (however, I normally fill up as it drops under half.)

I can assure you, you never fed back to the grid. When you stopped the car your range was based on your short journey which must have been gentle. Then when you started it up again, it's recalculated the range based on the average for the car. There would be a difference. That's why it's good to reset all the trips frequently. There are algorithms in the cars computer that know who's driving between you and your Mrs. Things like rate of change of pedal travel, whether one brakes early or late so adapts the regeneration accordingly. Great channel mate. Love the content. I'm 10 years EV, 6 hybrid Golf GTes, 3 in Audi Etron and now in a Volvo XC40 twin. I reckon my Volvo could have you 😉, certainly on 0 to 60, not on top end 😂😂. I'm the same, stopping at Lidl/Morrisons or Maccies is no good for the waistline.

Really surprised pod point are being that difficult. Get on their case, they need to sort it. Off peak home charging changes everything. I have an ioniq 5 in the depths of winter I get 240miles..in summer I get 300....its never let me down once in almost 2yrs of ownership. Absolutely love it. We have solar panels too... So weekends it charges for free during the day. Awesome stuff. Teslas are even easier to live with as they have a solid infrastructure that's cheaper to charge from... Don't give up on it mate👍

Having an EV you always need a bit of charge just case or have an ICE car as well.

I read that it’s been written into legislation that should the electricity companies require it they can use the charge stored in your car at home when plugged in obviously. You may wish to check that with your own provider. It’s all about the greater good Richard.

Something that will work for some people is using your battery to charge cheap rate - then run your home in the peak periods from your car battery

Great vid. I think these EVs are frought with problems - some will go away in the next few years but I honestly wouldn't own one for the very reasons you've covered. These chargers 'taking' charge back really doesn't sit right with me. Imagine a petrol station doing the same :D

Taycan does not support V2X. Also, these chargers are not bidirectional. So no, charger did not take your miles. What probably happened is that you arrived with 'Range mode' and then, when you powered on the car, it automatically started in Normal mode. Or you left something running in the car (A/C or something) and car was just using energy to do it.

Richard, I think what's happened here is the car knows it's plugged in so it's optimising the battery temperature using either the heater or AC and that has consumed the miles. If you were there an hour and it was running say a 4kW battery heater then that would be about right.

If you have to go into London If you want to drive your told to Have a net ,zero car. I wouldn't go to London in any ev I would prefer to go somewhere else the underground is Worse than driving in a ice car. I did work in London but glad I don't any more

Hi Richard. Your car should have come with a granny charger. A cable that allows you to plug in using a 3-pin plug. It’ll only charge at 3kw, but it’s something you can use while you’re sleeping. A commercial charger shouldn’t take charge from your battery. It’s more likely to be your air con, battery preconditioning, etc. Do you precondition before plugging in to a DC charger?

Didn't think the cars are bi directional yet, always thought it's down to the charger and car having to be compatible. The ford Mach e can with a ford home charger. I would have put the loss was down to the battery management system cooling or heating the battery would never had thought of it being down to bi directional charging, the government what's it but it should have asked for permission first.

I’ve commented a few times on a similar theme. Tesla network and charging speeds take all of the hassle you’re living away! I use my Tesla for a london commute from Devon and never charge less than 140kw. I use a home charger to top up overnight. I’d love an EV that doesn’t look like a milk float but I couldn’t put up with this BS..

The Taycan doesn’t have Vehicle to Grid (V2G) or Vehicle to Load (V2L), and even if it did, the chargers you used don’t support the above.

So here was my day. I had to get to Aberdeen which is about 140 miles, which is the edge of my winter range (standard range car, didn't shell out for the long range battery). Car was serviced the previous day, and came back with a factory reset. Oh frabjous day, 199 miles of range! In your dreams, but I could have pretended to believe it. So I turn the heating on as I get in the car as it's bloody cold, and suddenly it's only 189 miles of range. How terrible, range is just vanishing! No, it's the way the car works, turn on the heater and it subtracts a nominal 5% from the displayed range. (Which was already hopelessly optimistic but what the hell.) So off I set, and if there is one thing I will not compromise on it is comfort, so that heater stayed on. Another thing I am most reluctant to compromise on is utilising the speed of my rocket sled, so there's that, too. I watch the miles on the GOM reducing, and the miles to destination on Android Auto ditto, and to the surprise of absolutely nobody who isn't playacting for KZfaq likes, the former reduces a lot faster than the latter. I choose the more economical route through Glenrothes, even though it's SIX MINUTES slower! How terrible. (Later I ignored another more economical route that was 28 minutes slower, because I'm not a complete idiot.) About half way there things have settled down, and I seem to have 14 miles in hand. I start to believe the GOM. But the road gets a bit hilly and the margin degrades a bit more until it's only five miles (it appeared to be 60 miles at the start). Shame I don't have a KZfaq channel because I could milk this no end. Except I'm not far from Aberdeen by this time, and the last part is downhill so why would I worry? Car gets to 12 miles of range and asks if I want it to go into energy saving mode. I say yes but buggered if I know what difference that made, the performance didn't change and I never saw a turtle. I had thought about going for a destination charger near the church where the memorial service I was going to was to be held, but come on. Two cheap and two absolutely free plugs, in the city at lunch-time on Saturday, what were the chances? Correct, zero. I didn't go there, but if I had done that I could have thrown a fearsome strop, seven miles left and all the chargers are occupied!! But hey, I was over an hour early, how did that happen? Not sure, but I was. So I just went to the MFG chargers as I was passing. Oh noes, it will take an hour and 20 minutes to finish charging! I'll be late! No of course I won't because I can unplug when I like and only a raving idiot (or someone faced with a slap-up three-course dinner) charges to 100% on a DC charger. It was lunch-time so I went to the loo and bought a snack, and by the time I'd eaten that the car was at 83%. Perfect. OK, so lacking the destination charger - local authorities really REALLY need to put more of these in - I wasn't going to get all the way home from 80%. But I just popped in to the Tesla superchargers at Dundee on my way home. I'd been driving for well over an hour by then, stretching my legs and visiting the loo again was enough to get the charge up so I could get home with no issues. I could have made a video about that journey that would make it seem as if only a raving idiot would want to run an EV. But it would have been pure theatre and playacting. I knew the GOM was lying to me, but I also knew that I could make it to Aberdeen just fine. I knew the destination chargers would be taken, so I didn't waste time going there (I did check the app, and yes they were taken) to have a drama about it. I did spend some time charging, but the first time was lunch, and the second time was only a quick stop. I was expecting both stops, wasn't in a tearing hurry, and was completely relaxed about it. Bear in mind that this is the first day I've had to use a DC charger this year. I've used nothing but a 3-pin plug (and one go at a destination charger) since New Year, and I've done a fair old mileage. It's taken me seconds to plug the car in and unplug it, I haven't had to go near a petrol station, or even think about when I might need to do that. That's worth taking a wee bit longer on a long trip (that and how fresh and non-tired EV driving leaves you). Oh yes, I admit the MFG charger wasn't cheap. (The Tesla one was better.) But frankly who cares, when my at-home charging is pocket change?

My Porsche Cayenne ehybrid came with a 7kw home charger in the boot from Porsche.

So you thought it was a great idea to block that Rapid charge point while you went off for tea and cake. Would you have done that at a petrol point? Plug a nozzle in and walk away leaving the car parked there at the pump? What made you do such an antisocial thing and then tell the world how selfish you have been. In any case, you are totally wrong about the charge point 'taking charge' from you. It didn't. It can't. It's impossible. What happened is that the car saw it was plugged in and started to use a bit of its own battery energy to warm it up so that it could take a charge faster. The 7 miles you lost was BECAUSE you left it plugged in but not charging. And that 7 miles was not stolen from you by the charge company. Your own selfishness by hogging a valuable charge point lost that small charge from your own battery. These charge bays are not parking spaces for the entitled. It's called preconditioning and uses energy to do that. Your own lack of understanding and antisocial hogging is to blame.

They have had 200 years to sort EV's out and they are still trouble. You keeping one is the classic making your own life worse by making bad decisions
