She may not realize it but she really is revolutionizing the beauty ideals in DR. I went last August and for the first time, I saw women in their natural hair textures and it really made me so happy to see.

Beautiful to see Afro Latinas who take pride in their roots and inspire women to love their natural hair is amazing, i know in DR if you have curly or kinky hair it’s considered “bad” but i love that there’s people like her who broke free from that idea and decided for herself that it’s not true.

Judith Peña Varela yes but what I’m trying to say is that BEFORE it was look down upon to have kinky curly coily hair. That’s why many girls would get their hair straightened often because having that type of hair was not okay.

I’m going to DR this friday and my mom is already telling me to straighten in my curls because she doesn’t want people over there thinking we’re “poor or crazy”. There’s still a long way to go in cultural acceptance of our African ancestry. But I love my natural hair and it’s been two year since I last permed my hair and last March I did my big chop. All that has made me embrace my roots.

I’ve personally been to Miss Rizos salon in DR and the vibe and the employees are amazing. I got box braids done for only $70USD and girl was I SHOOK at how amazing they were done. I have a full head of thick curly hair that’s past my shoulders but when stretched they’re down to my waist. They finished the braids in 4 hours and on top of that they were medium thickness and reached mid butt. I wanna go back to DR just to get my braids done again and for that price 😂 loveeee this salon and I’ll deff be back when I go back to DR! 🇩🇴🇩🇴❤️

I remember first hearing about this Salon way back when. It was crazy because I am Barbadian and Panamanian and I went to a Panamanian hair salon. The lady would always relax my hair and when I went natural her solution was to press it every weekend. The idea that straight hair is the only “presentable” style is so ingrained in different cultures it’s crazy. One day I just stopped going to the salon and decided to figure my own hair out, 8 years later I’m still loving my natural hair.

Walking in a Dominican salon 10 years ago they would stare at you cause you choose to wear your tresses in its natural state. Or whisper words such as " Pelo Malo" or "no es bueno para los negocios" Now being natural is glorified or those one that state such hate are now Natural.

Really the same for me growing up in the US. The black community in the US, no matter what part, from New York to LA, Washington DC to Miami, we talk about "good" hair. I remember once, years ago, somebody said something about someone having good hair. An older guy (losing his hair) spoke up and said "it's all good hair, if you got hair on your head". It caused a bit of laughter, but it was really a serious thing.

Therefore I always felt the necessity of straightening my natural 3b curls when I was only 5. I’ve been trying to transition back for almost 3 years & all I want is my curls back. I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!! I think that it's important for Dominicans to be comfortable with their natural hair. When I first went natural I got backlash from the women in my family mostly because Dominican women were taught to love their natural hair instead they were taught to keep their hair straight. I hope this video can change how Dominican women see themselves when it comes to their hair. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

SagaciousNihilist People wear extensions, weave, etc. for multiple reasons. As protective styling against harsh weather, to help grow out their hair, because they want to try a different look but don’t want to damage their natural hair. Also not only black women wear weave or get perms (:

SagaciousNihilist wanting to change your hair up or try a hairstyle isn’t being ashamed of your hair or hiding a texture. I’m 1000000% black and I’ve hadn’t had any chemical in my hair since elementary school and my hair is curly so that statement is invalid. Your argument is hella invalid and hella ignorant.

Love my DR, I'm just like her born in DR and raised in the US. When I was young I always wanted to have my hair straight and a few years ago I learned to love it and embrace it! In DR discrimination still exist and we have to fight for it to end. I remember people telling me " wow your hair is so soft" whenever they touched it because my hair is curly I guess they assumed it wasn't soft, I hated when they said that. I think all hair is beautiful no matter what texture or color so who cares what people say or think! People are always going to have an opinion so no matter what, believe in yourself and embrace those beautiful curls God gave us!!!

Okay right. But Americans did a lot of the same evil stuff. That doesn't make me (an American) an evil person. I wasn't there, and I would never condone the horrible actions that were taken in the past and present. So that doesn't make every Argentine person evil. I was there, I took an entire course on the unfortunate history of Argentina, and I know what happened. However, I'd never blame the entire country for the actions of some people.

As a curly hair Dominican I know HOW BIG HAIR IS FOR OUR PEOPLE. You're called a pajonua from day 1, you're told to brush your hair when you 'just did it', you're told day in and out, and in some many ways to negate your blackness. I think this salon is such a great symbol of what to love and how to love it!

Everyone is so beautiful. When Julissa started crying it made me think of all the pent up pain and trauma she must have went through just because of her hair and she's just ONE Dominican woman. Hair texture isn't something I ever had to think about until 3 years ago when I learnt that hair, isn't JUST hair. And knowing that that in itself is a privilege is just sad and terrible. Personally I've always wanted my pincer straight Chinese hair to have more bounce and texture. I'd always thought of wavy and curly hair as more beautiful and I wanted it badly. Also, if you think that super textured hair is unkempt, messy, dirty, and unprofessional, I think the key word here is "well-kept". And the same goes for all types of hair. "Pelo malo" defies gravity without the use of any products (Taraji P. Henson!), and isn't that so wonderful and great?

I’ve been to MissRizos and fell so I love with it!!! I go every summer when I visit DR and was so happy to have a space where I felt my hair was acceptable in the middle of the oldest cities of America. Being natural in DR is a struggleee because of humidity and heat but also because of cultural in acceptance of curly hair but with a salon like this it’s all slowly being changed. All of the ladies are so knowledgeable and the atmosphere is so welcoming that you leave feeling like you can do anything in your natural state bc you can!! Every year I go back I see more and more girls with their natural kinks and coils and I couldn’t be more proud

In this salon I started my curly hair journey in May of 2017 (I have a video on my channel about it), unfortunately at the moment my self-esteem was on the floor and I didn't want to cut my hair, so I started my "transition" process, one month goes by and I got the impulse to go to a salon and just cut my hair, I didn't go to Miss Rizos and went to another famous curly hair salon in DR and the lady that cut my hair was JUST learning how to do it, so basically i was left bald lol Cutting my hair taught me so much about myself and about self-acceptance. I love what this salon is promoting in my country and I feel proud that every day more people in my very judgeamental country are coming to their senses that the hair that comes out of our head is perfect just the way it is.

Thank God i came to USA where people don’t give a fuck how you look (especially NY people really don’t care) but my family were so unsupportive even my mom, I don’t really blame them I mean we were taught that in DR but I keep going not giving a damn of what my family say and guess what 3 years later almost all of them are transitioning to their natural hair even my mom. Growing up and still now around my Dominican family and friends I constantly hear negative comments about wearing our hair naturally. I don’t have curly hair, mine is on the wavy side but I am still being told to straighten my hair when I go to family reunions or parties. Finally, I just want to say thank you for this video. There is still hope for change in this world! ❤️ I feel very hopeful after watching this video.

Julissa! You are a beautiful soul! I am neither Dominican nor curly haired but my God this moved me! You and Carolina were amazing together. To see two such passionate people with so much positivity made me feel so good to see and hear! When you began tearing up I felt it as well, you will accomplish what you are dreaming of . This was a wonderfully made video! Thank you Julissa and Carolina! Good job ladies! ❤️ HUGS

Min. 3:08 that's me. I've paid a lot of money to go into the salon and walk out and have *un pajon* minutes later that's why I hate going to the salon in D.R. 'cause it doesn't last. I was in Baní once walking down the street with my long curly hair and I heard how another female was laughing and commenting negatively on my hair cause it was frizzy. I just couldn't understand that much ignorance. Yo felicito tu iniciativa!!! D.R. was definitely not ready for this one, but it needs to get with the program.

Omg, this video got me all teary eyed. I'm Dominican and I decided to wear my curly hair proudly almost 9 years ago. My mom and some of my cousins have actually followed suit, which makes me so happy. I'm teaching my daughters to love their curly hair as well. It's a wonderful thing. #MoñoMaloDonde 😌
