I only read it in French so I'm very happy your review includes details of how well it was translated. This is such a fantastic book and I'm looking forward to reading it again this year. It just stays with you so long after closing the cover!!

Super interesting book. I hope it’s one that I read again in 5 years and take something new from it. Shout out to Emily Fox for bringing this to light for me and probably many others!

I read this late last year and it really moved me- beautiful book. I really like how you describe it as disquieting, that is exactly the feeling that it evokes- not scary, not really disturbing but everything is just a little off. Excellent review, Olly!

Difficult book to review; and you did great! I think one should read this book without a sense of urgency in discovering the plot - the digestion comes after. I found it very multilayered as you said and it touches very subtle in themes as loneliness, compassion and - maybe spoiler - assisted euthanasia. I found very captivating how the book tackles all these subjects. It's a book you can only talk about with other that read it without spoiling it. Cheers

Just finished reading this. I haven't been as deeply moved by a book as I was by this for a long time. I highly recommend going into it blind, as I did. I started reading the introduction then decided against it, and skipped straight to the story, not knowing anything beyond the premise of 40 women in a bunker. Beautifully and concisely written. Thank you, Olly, for the recommendation!

Sounds interesting. I don't know that I'll ever read it -- trying to get back to the 19th century -- but I can think of a couple people I might buy it for. Thanks for the rec!

The setup sounds interesting. The way you described this, I have almost identical feelings with another book - From the City, from the Plough. Different genre (war) but similar page length and packs a lot in. I guess I'll have to read this.

I LO♥︎E this book and have been chasing it's high for a couple years now. My next book in that project is After World by Debbie Urbanski which looks great! "After the Fall Before the Fall During the Fall" by Nancy Kress was a decent companion. "Tender morsels" by Margo lanagan has some simolar themes (and is great). I also have The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood hat I'm interested in. And there's one other book i can't talk about bc knowing there's a similarity would ruin it :/

Finally took the time to finish this book. Great book, ending is very moving. HOWEVER, there are 3 exceptions: her magic ovaries that know she has nobody to reproduce with, that she says that a penis is the only thing that can break a hymen and most importantly, she is taught to wipe FROM ASS TO FRONT. I don't want young ladies who are still learning about their bodies to read this and believe any of that, those things are not true in our dimension. Malnutrition can delay puberty but your ovaries aren't sentient. Lots of things can break a hymen, including exercise. And for the love of God, wipe front to back, for hygiene and your health. I know this takes place on a mysterious plain, with mysterious electricity and mysterious running water so maybe it's different there. And The Child's education on these things was limited as well, so just trust me on this one.
