Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. “I need this.” When I was a kid, my parents were obsessed with ornamentals in their yard…I used to scoff because I thought it was a waste of time and lacked utility…I grew food because it was useful. And as an artist, how could I dismiss aesthetics?!?! It’s in the past few years I have come around. You have helped me appreciate that beauty DOES have true purpose and value. So good for our eyes and souls! 💚🌱
@MartinaSchoppe

and so many of the "ornamentals" are edible, too. Like hostas, dahlias, day lilies, all alliums, yarrow, malvas, sedums, maple leaves... check out PFAF - plants for a future - they list loads of plants with their uses - edible, medicinal, fibre..

I worked with ornamentals my whole life worked/owned plant nurseries.. started watching homestead videos and felt completely useless for that same reason like I had wasted so much time making things pretty I’m an artist and that’s what we do and I get it now , always loved Jess’ videos because her home was pretty and she had houseplants I could totally relate when not much else made sense 😉❤️

I wish people could see the importance of natives as a way to balance beauty in the garden with also being beneficial. As humans, we have an amazing opportunity to combine both beautiful gardens with functional spaces that can support our native bees and butterflies.

His yard is beautiful and so full of life. All of the birds singing in the background. What a wonderful place. And what a delightful young man he is. Definitely is a fun person to have as a friend. And that red obsidian banana tree was gorgeous! I am so tempted to get one, if it comes in a dwarf variety. I am more of an English cottage garden style person for my own garden. But in 2019 I bought an old house with a huge green Banana tree by the front steps and it has turned into several HUGE Banana trees. They completely shade out everything near them, so I keep dividing them and giving them all away. But they just keep coming back bigger and with even more pups then I can give away. I have even over whelmed my Puerto Rican neighbor who uses the leaves to make delicious roast pork dishes that are cooked in banana leaves and served with rice also rice cooked in banana leaves. Last winter in December, we had an ice storm and got down to 14 degrees below 0 plus the windchill, and every banana tree was deader than a door nail. I was so happy that they were gone and I wasn’t the one who killed them. During the Spring I had Covid for over 2 months and I was too sick to get out of bed let alone replant anything.(yes,against my will, I got the vaccine. Turns out the new variant attacks the vaccinated people worse then it does the unvaccinated people!) The first time I went out side my front door it was Summer and those darn banana trees were back with twice as many plants and they were up to the roof of my house and had huge beautiful leaves blocking the entire front stairs. I don’t know if it’s God or satan that has the wicked sense of humor, I am sure that someone was laughing when I saw my front yard looking like a tropical jungle all overgrown with Johnson grass taller than corn and banana trees.😂😂😢 So if I give in and get one of those beautiful red obsidian banana bushes, it is going to be confined to a very large pot. Does anyone know of an organic way to kill Johnson grass??? I am thinking about covering it with cardboard and some unopened bags of potting soil for a year, but I live next to a Karen and if she doesn’t like something, (and she can always find something in my garden that she doesn’t like)she calls the city codes violation department and has me fined. One time when thieves broke into my basement and stole my lawn mower and weed eater she got my other neighbor to spray the entire outside of my chain link fence that runs the length of the alley with Round up, (on a breezy day.) They killed a gorgeous 62 year old tree size Rhododendron in my backyard and a 62 year old oak tree. Not to mention a drift of daffodils, and the a third of my lawn that has now been replaced with Johnson grass. That alley was on the far side of my property away from her property, so she had no business having my property sprayed. But as I said, someone around here, has a sense of humor. I know because that very Fall a big gust of wind missed my house, but caused the dead oak tree to fall, crushing her fence and peach tree. Of course the city fined me for that too.😮 But I did get in the last word, that “if she had minded her own yard which is full of junk cars and let me tend my own garden with organic methods that oak tree would still be alive and would not have fallen in the wind and she could still be eating her own peaches!!!”

I love that you drove knowing you were bringing back a trunk/truckload of materials home, the very reason we drive to FL to see family, and hitting the nurseries in the areas allows me to buy things for better prices and unavailable things to my NC area. I do have a haul of tropicals that must overwinter inside the house and I am making a "plant" room to house them and also to start all my seeds inside. I plan to pick up a mandarin orange or 2 on our next trip down because I have a space next to the house with overhang enough to protect it through the winter. Watching David the Good's youtube channel will show how to create microclimates to push your zone from 7b to 8b or even a 9.
