And people talk about what good drivers at NASCAR and INDY are, they are nothing compared to these Pilots. They have a LOT of responsibilities, keeping sometimes as many as 600 people comfortable and landing these planes, incredible. Thank you for sharing these harrowing events with us.

Was there a special procedure to select the AirBerliner pilots or it was the special atmosphere in the company? I have an impression these were people with love for flying and it seemed to me the flights were almost like joyrides - take-offs, turns, circles, dips... (Especially if the flight was not overcrowded) "In over 39 years of operations, Air Berlin never suffered an accident or incident resulting in the loss of life or an aircraft."

I've landed in a small 6 place plane in Temecula, California where the wind shear was so strong we had to abort and go around for a second run, I know how that feels, but these guys were/are aces, my hat is off to them...

When I was a student pilot I would call my instructor on the windiest of days to shoot crosswind touch and goes. I would select an airport with a runway perpendicular to the wind and have at it. I wanted to be sure that I had the skills and confidence to land under the worst conditions. One's mind must be clear of anything but the task at hand. The level of concentration induced in me a state of Satori, a natural high.

The way I see it owning a large business myself, is that you have to be responsible for your own actions. There is no such thing in my mind as too big to fail or too small to grow. We all have to play by the same rules or everything starts to fall apart. When the bottom fell out in 2008 and general motors took a huge chunk of taxpayer cash I was sick to my stomach. Would they have done that for every Jon Doe on the street?

Why are they shutting down, for me they where the best alternative to Ryanair. Great pilots and quality service. It's SAD

High standard aircraft, nice interior, professional and kindly staff, some snack included...That´s what Air Berlin meant to me in the past. Had a few nice vacation flights on them, quite sad about stopping service!! Good one, R.I.P.

That is one nasty ass Airport! I always enjoyed coming in with very little flaps and slipping it in which gave me great practice for crosswind Landings. But those are ridiculous. Who decided to put a Runway between two hilltops that create a chimney? A short runway on top of that.

There's nothing scarier than the first time you look out your passenger window to see straight down the runway as the pilot is coming in at a 45° angle during a crosswind! OMG
