Alex, as crazy as it might seem, I think you may do even better as the summer continues. After watching Kate's most recent video and now seeing yours, they both confirm my thinking. That is, the high-level of the river this year is going to now have positives for all the hounds that make it out there. What a nice bunch of finds!

What an excellent adventure! My favorite was the large one toward the end in the photo you posted. Beautiful! You’ll find many more amazing treasures! No worries about your spray bottle. I just went out to every access all the way to Custer and it's not good man. The clean rock you see on the river right now will be the only clean rock for the year. The flooding silted everything over. There are some spots that it tilled up good but they are far and few in between. Most accesses are picked over already. Go check out Custer and you will see what I mean. There's no rock showing at Captain Clark.

Also the cleanest rock I seen was in between Livingston and Columbus.

I came here because I'm a sucker for agates. I've also been collecting petrified wood since last year. Most of the agates I have were found in pea gravel. One of my recent finds was a specimen the size of a pickle jar lid. Found it on the beach in Hoodsport; would not have seen it if not for the sun. Also found another huge piece by railroad tracks in Skykomish.

Dude, ya can get a bunch of cheap spray bottles and always have one or spend what a good one would cost or two and happy houndin'!! As a child of 9 to 11 I thought myself a good rock hounder but I grew up and left it behind. I was so proud of myself finding and classifying the stones but who knows where they lay now. At 67, I'm living my vicarious years but it's nothing like walking along and finding them in person. Thanks for the vid. It helps. 😁

This was a great hunt! I hate that the flood caused such damage, but it definitely turned over some gorgeous rocks! Thank you for sharing and I look forward to seeing those big agates cut open and polished.

We found lots of agates, petrified wood & jaspers along with some gorgeous rocks for my gardens. Your insightful videos were so helpful. And you are absolutely correct when you say how beautiful the Yellowstone is. It was an incredible experience & we are looking forward to going back.

The spray bottle straw, that draws the water up, is likely just pointed to the wrong side while it's tilted forward. So if you can spin the spray nozzle, without it loosening, or causing the straw to spin along with it. Then that should be a quick easy fix :)

It's great to see you back out on the Yellowstone, Alex! Doing beds in the yard is a great way to display your rockhounding finds. My husband started doing that years ago and we have some lovely displays in the yard. A thought about the big agates you are finding. I think you're getting better at spotting them too, in addition to the flood turning over the gravel. When you first started out, you would have missed some of those dark ones. I love all kinds of petrified wood and it's good to see you keeping some more this year.

I just got a little rock tumbler. I do yard rocks and love it. I live about an hour from a dormant volcano and down the road from a diamond mine. I'm finding and polishing some beautiful yard rocks

@@AgateAngler How big of saw are you looking to obtain? I have a 10 inch Highland Park slab saw that is weight driven(Old School). It is just collecting dust. I use a 10 inch gear driven built by an engineer friend & also have an 18 inch Lortone. Anymore, the pocketbook is the thing. A friend of mine sold a used 36 inch Highland Park for $9500.00. He had to have a winch system just to put rocks in the chain clamp. The buyer used a flat bed to get it out of the shop. I couldn’t even afford the oil.

@@parleygeorge7164 I'm thinking 12 in maximum. I was looking at Highland Park as a possibility. All I have right now is a little 1.5 inch tile saw and I have so many bigger rocks that I'd like to cut. I think it would make some interesting content as well.

I knew it would be epic after the waters receded. If you ever collected water for you bottle from the river then you may have some sand clogging the suction straw.

I was rockhounding on the yellowstone river a few days ago and found some corundum with gold flakes in it, a piece of petrified wood longer than my hand, and a turqoise rock with agate in parts of it about the size of my fist in the span of 5 minutes

Sprayer is air locked. The tube needs water pored down it and quickly inserted into full or almost full bottle. Try this, it should work. 😉

Thanks for sharing my video. To answer your question: No, they don't do anything for log jams. It is just a natural part of the river. It will get washed away next spring when it floods again.

My wife and I were out walking and I noticed that someone had put new river rock around their mailbox. I picked up over 50 really nice agates out of the pile. I wish I knew where they got the rock from

Like you say, it's about the best agate picking ANYWHERE. My favorite on the Yellowstone is way up in the northeast corner of the state. However, over many decades, I've discovered some downsides of collecting agates. What to do with them after I find them. I've watched lapidarists spend hours and days cutting, polishing, faceting just one agate to make it marketable. It doesn't take a truckload of rocks to do that. As a hobby, some folks sell agates at rock shows. But, I've seriously questioned if their profit exceeds their expenses. Perhaps the most lucrative side of hunting agates is making KZfaq videos that are monetized. ............. lol

That was a huge agate!!! you guys have the pretties jaspers and pet woods too. That huge chunk of agatized wood was really pretty! wow and two more big huge agates! Wow! And another one! The Petrified Forest is a National park in Arizona. If you are caught taking ANYTHING you can go to jail and pay hefty fines. Yet in Montana it seems you can find it laying around free for the taking. Wish I could go to Montana!

Been following your channel quite awhile. Flyfisherman, and beginner rockhound (never found an agate over here in N Id!) Thinking about running over there this summer. Can a guy just go anywhere there's access and find agates (and other good rocks) or will they be picked over by mid Aug?

Roy, first of all, thanks for watching the channel and supporting my content. As to your question, yes, any public river access whether park, fishing access, etc will put you on gravel that contains (or contained) agates. Obviously you want to look for places that are less picked to increase your odds. But I glance at gravel in fairly picked places frequently and often find an agate or two. It is all about how much work you are willing to put in.

I live in Billings, MT. You cannot hunt in the National Park, but the Yellowstone river flows for many miles beyond park boundaries.

Essentially the flood cycle of the river and lack of dams leads to a continuous erosion that is always refreshing the gravels and exposing new material to hunt. So, yes......

Amber, I film on the Yellowstone River, not in the Yellowstone National Park. So no, there are no limits on collecting.

I was wondering when would be a good time to come up your way from down here in Missouri. I was in Miles City area with my kayak last year during the last week of April and it was nice but the water was quick. I have exclusive permission from a rancher with a mile+ of river front to launch from or to. I would be interested in taking another kayaker or two along if you might be interested. I was waiting for gas prices to drop but that's not gonna happen soon it seems. At my age (70) I worry if I don't go when I can then I may not be able to next year although I've been blessed with great health and fitness so far. I have enough rocks to cut and polish for two lifetimes but I still love to adventure. I have always gone alone till now but my wife (of 47 yrs) feels better if I don't go on the rivers or Great Lakes alone anymore. Too much talkin, sorry.

Hi Mark. Honestly, anything from now until early November is pretty darn good. Spring works well too until about the end of May. Winter is obviously not ideal. I'd be thrilled to tag along it is just dependent on timing and location. I generally don't stray more than 1-2 hrs away from the Billings area. how come you dont mention that almost every stone looks like someone worked on it , they all have faces some worn more than others ... but their like story stones Native American carved ??? prehistoric carved ??? but i see it !!! Aloha from Hawaii, DSC777
