I swear those birds sound like they're laughing at you while you were digging out those blackberries! Really, really appreciate your detailed explanations about why you're doing certain things, such as the straw covered by compost, watered in with the center setting and letting it sit for a few days. So many bits of info just in those few minutes!! You definitely know what you're doing and are a great teacher, as well.

What I love is your garden is much like the one I am creating at my 'forever home'. It's not 'picture perfect'. It's functional. And for me, I have to work on a very limited budget, so I have to do what I can without spending a lot of money.

In the '90's I lived in a neighborhood in Oceanside where the streets were lined with jacarandas. I found a few sprouted seedlings growing in a clump near the curb. I took them home and transplanted them into my yard.

I recently moved into a property that had a garden that had been neglected for at least a decade, massive garden and over run with blackberrie brambles, I mean they were everywhere, I 've been digging out the root tubers since September. Every weekend. Digging.

I have mine in ground too but only one of them is thorned. I'm going to wait and see if it ends up being invasive. And if it does, then I'll move it somewhere else (far away from my paths) and let the birds have the fruit so it will take pressure off the other fruit trees and plants I have in my garden.

Yep, I planted mine in pots, the ground around them is covered in 10-12 inches of stones, yet still, at least a few canes of the blackberry hit the ground (stones) without me noticing and still manage to burrow down to the soil and begin to grow there! There is absolutely no stopping this monster! LOL!

Oh my God you had me from the start. I garden almost exclusively in fabric pots and have woken up to having my pots dug into by racoons looking for grubs. I actually caught 3 racoons in the act one late night digging. I ran out to scare them off. They ran off but have come back a few times more. I also have many squirrels that like to dig in my pots to hide peanuts. Its disappointing when you think of all the work you put in, to grow your own vegetables. I loved watching this Vlog and looking forward to more. Love your style Jacques. Thank you for all your information.

I'm so glad to see you were able to really tackle those blackberries! Here in Seattle those things are a bit of a nuisance in gardens. We're trying our hand at some Prime-Ark Traveler blackberries in containers to prevent any potential takeover of our garden, so here's hoping we don't regret that decision! P.S: I lived in San Diego for a few years and appropriately nicknamed our house The Birdhouse due to all the racket the neighborhood birds made right outside our house. Your bird comment made me chuckle. I kind of miss the bird nonsense, but kind of don't lol

You sitting in your “pit of shame”… I felt that to my core. 🤣🤣😭😭 That was me last week in my 16ft long rose bush bed the lines my walkway. 🫣 This is the THIRD time I’ve sat in my Pit of Shame with sweat soaked clothes and tears streaming down my face. I think I’ve dug deep enough this time and removed eeeeeevery little root I came across. I wish I’d though if using a board to help sift my soil- my arms were on fire!!!! 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ Thanks for the upkeep video- the nitty gritty time consuming tasks that people seem to leave out when talking about the wonderful world of gardening!! 🤫🤣 See ya next time! ✌🏼💙🌱👨🏻‍🌾

Blackberries grow all over the place here and they are quite hard to dig out and get rid of. It’s more of a long term ordeal to get rid of them. So I hope for your sake you got them all but I suspect you will have a few shoots to dig up in the future. Be persistent and you will get them. I have some raspberries planted in my garden that I’m somewhat regretting. I wish I had put them in containers. I’m not sure why I thought they would be different from blackberries but at least most of them are thornless.

I love the vlog style! The single topic videos are great for when we need to find answers to specific questions, but I prefer vlogs for more regular content. I love being able to follow gardeners who are also in California since our conditions we are working with are so similar, and I get to learn little tips along the way that I didn’t know I needed to learn. Also, your vlog video is more relaxed & enjoyable IMO (I don’t want you to stop doing topic videos tho! I need those lol!). It’s more like I get to just spend time learning as you work, rather than having a lesson being directly taught to me, does that make sense? Love all your videos and envious of your garden space 😊 ❤️ April from Modesto Ca

I wanted to share that I love my Bushel & Berry thornless Baby Cakes Blackberry and Raspberry Shortcake Raspberries. They are doing well in their 3rd year in 16" pots. They're full of berries, tight and compact, and bred to be a good container plant. Also, pruning is easier. No worries about whether its primocane or fluorocane (sp?). You just cut away what doesnt leaf out in the spring. I actually had no dead canes to prune out this spring, and every single branch is full of berries.

@@jacquesinthegarden I learned the hard way after pulling out blackberries from the backyard of the house I grew up in. They continued to take over about 1/10 of an acre. Kevin posted a YT video on planting B&B berries in containers. I've found them in store in the spring at Home Depot, Lowes, and Tractor Supply, but didn't trust that I got the right branded berry when I ordered online from HD. Seemed to be a generic blueberry

I like it! We got a little info on a bunch of different stuff, and you kept it interesting. These blackberries are a nightmare to remove! We have the same problem up here in AK with salmonberries. They have wonderful sweet red and orange berries and are easy to forage all over the island but if they get established in your garden you're basically screwed. There are some terrible herbicides out there that can kill them but they kill everything else too so that's out. I'm fighting a wall of them coming from my neighbors place. I'm not too worried because I stay on top of them and the chickens love the fresh greens.
