You're right, Father Stu wasn't a Saint, but many saints were not perfect, and oftentimes, our understanding of saints is inaccurate. For example St. Therese, whose portrait is on your shirt told her sister to keep any substance away from her bedside that could potentially be used to commit suicide before her natural death. According to what I have read or heard, some priests say it wouldn't be abnormal to hear Padre Pio swear, although he was morally against it. These realistic depictions help people realize that they were humans struggling against the devil like the rest of us... furthermore we don't know if Father Stu will be canonized a saint... he very well could be in the future and even if he never is, it doesn't make him any less of a Saint, it just means he wasn't officially canonized.

Thank you amber. I really wanted to see this movie, but am not so sure after hearing your comments. I have worked really hard to rid my life of sexual sin, a lot of which came from viewing immoral media/pornography. Thanks be to God I am free from that. Looking back, I can see how 1 movie scene, one camera shot of explicit nudity or sexual act can be a gateway for further temptation. I agree that it has no place in a movie and adds nothing to the storyline. The Bible says the human heart is deceitful and corrupt, and that from within the heart comes evil. How can we be so naive to think that we are immune to the temptation and perversion that seeps into our daily lives when it is so blatantly in our faces? We are not and we cannot. We are weak in our flesh, and for that reason we cannot give ourselves over to even a small moment of temptation, even in the name of viewing a “Catholic movie”

Didn't Bishop Barron endorse this movie? He had Shia on his show. Based on the trailer it looks good. i still plan on giving it a try. The nudity certainly is unnecessary, but I've heard it's brief, and at one point used as a visual manifestation of temptation. Also the production of the film brought Shia to our blessed Lord, which is awesome!

I do not think having Shia LaBeouf on his shows is the same as endorsing watching the movie, specially considering the movie was not distributed yet at that time. I'm not sure I would say the trailer looks good but I've seen other Catholic comentator, Michael Knowles, saying it was interesting. Matt Fradd, also Catholic and I would say exper on these kind of moral advice, has said he cannot watch any movies with nudity, and has explained why. I think the same way, and I guess I would only watch a version that has does not have that scene, wether it is breif or not, for me that is not relevant. As for the conversion of Shia LaBeouf, I agree. That is awesone! I'm waiting for this video hoping it will be an interesting discussion about the movie.

I watched the movie with my priest we both agreed that this was a great movie and would watch it again. When the movie was over, I was almost in tears as the end is one of the most realistic portrayals of what consolation in Christ actually means. Not “comfort” in the way many tend to think, but truly feeling His presence amidst suffering. As far as the issues with the movie that have been brought up in this video and by a lot of Catholic personalities online, I think it’s a shame that the meaning (what I got at least) seems to have been lost on many because of what I see as unnecessary overly puritanical critique. The sacrilege and perversion is powerful and I feel, necessary for the audience (who remember, most who will view this will not be Catholic) in order the depict fully how Satan reaches into the darkest recesses of our hearts to tempt and disorder us. The scenes that have caused such a scandal for many I feel have been over blown (probably, because I’ve noticed, many criticizing the movie have not actually seen the film for themselves.) the imagery is disturbing and (as intended) makes a person very uncomfortable. However these particular moments in the film are just that, moments. Extremely brief shots that leave the audience a little haunted by what they saw. Personally, I watched this 2 days after the release of the film and had already seen a lot of harsh criticism regarding the scenes. The level of pearl clutching made me expect something much much worse than what happened in the scene. While nearing the end of the film I said aloud “that can’t be what everyone is talking about, something worse must happen”. But then the end of the movie came and I realized, it became apparent that the very short disturbing moments were indeed the extent of the scandalous scene. Because of the nature of this film and it’s dark themes, it’s definitely for mature viewers and not something kids or really even most high schoolers should watch imo. As to the vulgarity, I don’t think this is a big deal and in fact, I think it helps portray parts of Padre Pio better. He was a man who dealt with a lot of anger and the brief moments where vulgarity is used help to demonstrate how and where it was directed. Lastly, one of the biggest criticisms I’ve seen of the movie is that there’s not as much Padre Pio in the movie as people expect and that the circumstances in which he lived, a community that was experiencing bloody communist revolution, seemed to take a more central theme than most wanted. I think this is actually a vital theme to be represented in the film and helps contrast Padre Pio’s growth toward holiness in an important way. He lived in a very tumultuous and dark time which cannot be separated from who he was. To take the man out of his context is to lose part of the man. The juxtaposition of his life with the world around him is important to more deeply understand him. Another thing I’ve noticed about this critique regarding the heavy role the communist theme plays in the movie, is it makes it seem like many wanted what would have amounted to be a feel good story or a movie documentary about his life. But we already have many of both of those things. We’ve never seen the fuller context of his life so deeply explored through this art medium until now. I think it was very well done. It makes me sad that this movie is receiving the amount of backlash it is because it is now one of my favorite religious films I’ve seen. I would recommend it. It truly spoke to me.

You nailed it. Part of the reason nobody takes Christianity seriously is because so many like Amber primarily concern themselves with purity chasing and turning away from anything even remotely real and gritty. Jesus never shied away from our sexual and vulgar sins. He came down amongst us to wade in our muck and save us from sin. We should be reminding people that no sin is too far for His power.

Our first duty is our personal holiness before holy God. Second to that is duty towards neighbor, to evangelize them. If there is a conflict between the two, we choose our duty towards God over our duty towards neighbor. If you have the mind of Christ purity is total. There is no acceptance for even little impure moments of sin that will only haunt you and make the movie more impactful. Don't you see that Jesus wants you to be perfectly conformed to His mind in every minute detail? If the film is seen by non Catholics, let them behold how we are in the world but not of the world. He commanded us, "Be perfect even as Your Father in Heaven is perfect." God and a very little sinful participation in a sexually explicit act by watching it without condemning it, cannot go together.

Some people don't need to see this kind of temptation portrayed on film because they themselves experience often, even daily. I don't watch modern ultra realistic war movies either because I saw it first hand too. Shall I go on in more detail since seeing all the ugly that manifests itself in this world seems to inspire you. Some of us do not need to see these things "explored" on film because we live those "dark themes". I am glad this movie "spoke to you" but your chastisement of those who are "clutching their pearls" is most uncharitable without knowing our circumstances, our experiences and the life we are living and have lived. I think, dear Olivia, you may praise the movie as you wish but refrain from your criticism of individuals who find parts of this movie repulsive and do not share your view.

If God gave Shia Labeouf a second chance to convert through this movie, how can I not support a movie that helps someone else’s conversion. I sin and fall so many times and still God have mercy on me. I might not like it but I will support it, I am sure Padre Pio will agree with me. As Jesus said, we are infinitely valuable to God, and when we are lost and separated from Him, He searches for us and does everything He possibly can to rescue us. And when we finally realize just how lost we are and turn to Him in repentance and faith, He rejoices -- and all heaven with Him. Jesus said, "I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents" (Luke 15:10). I am glad Shia Labeouf found his way to Christ, I hope and pray that he continues walk and grow in the right path.

So this is unacceptable and is a total misrepresentation. His great power and miracles were a product of a life of holiness. Such holiness is impossible amidst such vulgarity.

This kind of imagery is seeding peoples thoughts all over the world, and it will take a lot of hard work to get rid of the infestation these seeds WILL grow into. I pray your husband lets Jesus overflow from his heart to endure the temptations and have the courage to do what is right and remove himself from this environment/ lifestyle completely. Complete repentance is required, not learning to accept your sin and try to keep it under control. I do also want to let it be known that I did go to confession after watching this movie so that in the first place should be a deterrent to all our brothers and sisters even though the movie itself had its good faithful moments and did bring Shia to the faith which is absolutely incredible. I believe it should have been more focused on Padre Pio and not the other side story. It seemed like it focused more on the side story than Padre Pio which is a shame. Padre Pio is my patron Saint and I am so happy that he has helped me along my journey of faith and continues too. God bless you all and Ave Maria, I hope my testimony helps those considering to watch this movie. Father Stu is a good movie but it’s based on the Vatican 2 counter church. Padre Pio is during the rain of the true Catholic Church
@YaksoHD
@YaksoHD Жыл бұрын
@@jakeTommy2346 I know that, it does not mean that they aren’t Catholic however. Vat 2 should have never happened but it did, they started removing tradition, changed the reverence of the Mass, as well as many other things. It doesn’t mean that a Novus Ordo Mass is invalid just because Vat 2 was the wrong. The true mass is the TLM you and I know that as many other faithful Catholics are turning more and more to it. Now how can we say that God left the largest portion of our brothers and sisters and have left them hungry? How can we say that hell did prevail against our Lords Church going against His own promise to Peter? How can we say that the miracles and messages from Mary and our Lord to modern day mystics are untrue and wrong? The Church is still Gods Church, and He will not let His sheep go hungry, you have to think that most of these people are ignorant about the majority of the things happening in the wider scene today. There are priest, Bishops, and Cardinals fighting for the truth and trying there best to refute the false teachings. Vigano, a great Cardinal who only does the TLM from my knowledge has exposed corruption and is fighting for the tradition of the Church. Speaking on the validity of the Novus Ordo, it does meet all the requirements for it to be valid but a lot of modern day priest have made it invalid by doing it there own way, using improper matter for the consecration. However, we still see miracles that have happened after Vat 2 in the Novus Ordo Mass such as our Lord multiplying Himself in the Ciboruim, the Eucharist turning into flesh and blood one as recent as 1997. There are many proofs to show us that our Lord is still there in the Church, I don’t want to speak for Him but im sure He doesn’t like what happened but He won’t let faithful souls go hungry. The devil can’t perform miracles so we also have to deny that possibility especially considering those miracles are rare and something that only God can do and is a faith increaser not debilitating or faith which is the goal of the evil one. Those who attend the TLM are certainly following Gods true Church but those raised and born with the NO Mass aren’t in the wrong themselves and still receiving our Lord as long as the Mass reaches all requirements. I’ve spoken with a traditional order and that was one question about the validity of the NO and it is valid but is easy to become invalid. Soon the true Church will have to go into hiding just as prophesied but we still haven’t reached that day yet. We should try to lead people as much as possible to the true ways to our Lord while we have this period we shouldn’t be denying our brothers and sisters and the good priest that have only known that way of the Church. Sorry for the long response just it’s something I’ve looked into in depth and I know the truth of the TLM and how it is the true way of celebrating our Lord but also found that those receiving in NO aren’t receiving just a piece of bread. And the priest I’ve known have always made sure the Mass is valid at least the last 3 I’ve known. God bless you

@@jakeTommy2346 and you have to realize Padre Pio died after Vat 2 and never said anything about the changes in the Church to my knowledge being false or of the devil. Of course He still performed the true Mass but never called out those following the New form, the new mass might soon turn into something false but we haven’t reached that point in time yet. At least all the evidence points to that not being the case. We just need to show our fellow brothers and sister the truth, love, and reverence to God in the true form of the Mass which will most likely be the form we all will be celebrating after the great chastisement.

I think a lot of the negative reactions from Catholics has to do with expectations and a misunderstanding of context. We all got wrapped up in Shia's conversion and brought that excitement over and converted it to high expectations of the film itself. This is not the well done, faithful biopic of the saint's life that everyone was looking for. Instead this is an art film that focuses on a very specific period of trial in the life of St. Pio. The film also contrasts the political turmoil going on in Italy at the time with the spiritual struggles of Padre Pio. The film is far from a masterpiece but its not as bad as a lot of Catholics are making ot out to be. Disappointing? Perhaps, but this isn't an episode of "game of thrones" or anything like that. If you're interested in watching it, then watch it. Just keep in mind that it is an art film so if thats not your thing then this film will be weird and boring to you.

I actually watched this film for its entertainment value the day it came out, realizing its accuracy wasn’t going to be that of a documentary. The film is rated R and it is not for children. Yes, it includes the infamous curse word scene*, violence/death, and nudity. Part of the scene brought back memories from reading a book about St. Benedict of Nursia who threw his naked body into thorn bushes in order to eliminate any feelings of lust. The cinematography is both simple-and-aesthetically pleasing. I personally watched it with subtitles. I think the film captures human brokenness during a very difficult time period in Southern Italy; the material and mood is dark. The only contrast to the darkness of the film’s material seems to be hints of the Tridentine Mass and prayer. It’s interesting to know that Shia LaBeouf dealt with a suicidal depression prior to accepting this project. I believe he credits St. Padre Pio, his time with the Capuchin Order, and Catholicism as saving his life. The film doesn’t end on a high note, more like a cliff hanger or wanting a part-two. It’s unfortunate they didn’t add text after the film to acknowledge St. Padre Pio helped transform San Giovaunni Rotondo into a more prosperous community. St. Padre Pio even proposed and I believe helped build a hospital-which was clearly needed during the films time period. *Publicly St. Padre Pio is never known to have cursed in the confessional. I personally wouldn’t look at him any differently if he did. It is accepted that St. Padre Pio had a short temper in the confessional. I believe he thought he knew or did in fact know people better than they knew themselves. St. Padre Pio probably became annoyed when someone was feeding him baloney esp. given the fact he had to see so many people. In general liars feel like they’re wasting your time. I imagine if I had to see the same person weekly feeding me baloney or the same asinine sins I’d be pretty stern with them as well.

You might have seen my own video about this - I’m overall with you on the sacrilegious scene, but having seen the movie, I would not tell catholics to boycott it: I loved most of the scenes where Shia conveys Padre Pio’s intensity: they are full of spiritual energy and I found them inspiring (a couple of them are in fact full of Christian love). Nothing to do with a historic representation, of course, simply an artistic rendition of the interior life of the great Saint. And the capuchin friars who live in San Giovanni helped the movie production craft those scenes, and endorsed it. So I’m with those catholics who say that there is a lot of good in this movie, even from a spiritual standpoint, that would be a shame to miss if all we do is boycott it because of one single scene. But of course they’re all perfectly legitimate personal choices.

While I’m not going to watch it because stuff that is described as being in the movie is just too disturbing to me I am very happy for Shia. I am Italian, raised in Catholicism, although now fully indifferent in matters of religion, as almost everyone in my generation. What strikes me most about American/Anglosaxon Catholics is how seriously you/they seem to take the rules of the Church: here most of the people are formally Catholic (baptized, sacramented, etc.) , but at the same time never attend mass, swear God and the saints, mock the priests, have sex before/outside marriage etc. You always seem to bear the fervour of the new converts, whilst here, I think because of the political omnipresence of the Church in our history, people have developed a quite latitudinary attitude regarding sacred things: for you Catholicism is something exotic and mysterious, for (most of) us is just dusty and boring. In some regions formerly part of the Papal States (Umbria and Romagna) there is an open hatred towards the Church (although not towards the religion in itself), in others like Veneto and Tuscany swearing God is something extremely common and I dare say folkloric, in the South devotion, especially to saints, is more similar to a pagan cult than to christianism. I think that the most striking aspect about Padre Pio as a historical phenomenon (not considering the accusations of imposture) is the explosion of sincere and unparalleled fervour in a Country which, behind the curtains of baroque religious apparata, is substantially cold and indifferent in matters of godly things. Padre Pio is the most notable exception to what I wrote at the beginning. He became a sort of omnipresent Alter Christus, here in Italy, even difficult to analize as a mere historical figure because of the outstanding aura of popular devotion that surrounds him. For example, the good book on Padre Pio by Sergio Luzzatto, albeit being a rigorous and not tendentious piece of historical research, has been extensively criticized by many catholics only because trying to treat him in a disenchanted way as a peculiar man in the context of 20th Century Italian politics and society, and not as a semi-divine figure.

You sealed my fate...as far as going to see this movie. I was very dubious when I saw one of the highlights being promoted was "Padre Pio" F-bombing the woman in the scene. I thought to myself, "Self: don't we experience enough F-bombing outside of the movies already? And THIS is supposed to be about an esteemed 20th century Saint...cussing, fitting right in with the Zeitgeist, eh?" I hadn't even heard about the nudity but I would think a movie about Padre Pio DOES NOT need to have the said nekked lady, much less actor LeBoof's butt on the big screen to make me think this is a great movie about our beloved Saint. Thanks for the heads up, Religious Hippie...

I've already watched it. It wasn't that interesting from a plot perspective, only because Pio and the main plot seemed quite separate, which I wasn't expecting. But then again, Pio was a Capuchin Friar, so it makes sense that he wouldn't be that embedded in the community. Shia's performance was amazing, however. He's such a great actor and it is great to see someone with that much talent working on something from a Catholic perspective. I hope he goes on to do more. Shia and Mel Gibson working on something would be phenomenal. But then again, Shia probably won't be consistently doing movies with Catholic subject matter in them. It would be great if he did, but we have to be realistic here.

Instead of having a simple "Yes/No", it might be better to grade movies on a sliding scale of 0-100 or A-F with regards to nudity, swearing etc. This would allow people to make more informed choices and is also fairer to the movie (it does not deserve to be in the same category as say, actual pornography).

The greater the sinner - the greater the right to My Mercy… Those are the words Jesus shared with St. Faustina. If this movie (Padre Pio) only served as an instrument of grace to assist in Shia's conversion-- for that reason alone the movie was well worth it. As someone very knowledgeable about the life of St. Padre Pio, this film falls short. If I had to guess, St. Pio was only present in 20% of this movie -as other reviewers have complained. As a child St. Pio's mother asked him why he wouldn't play with the other children and he stated they speak with too much vulgar language. St. Pio dropping an F- bomb in reality was probably unlikely. However, I can see how the word was used to convey an emotion… and so I think it should be given a pass as the intent was probably honest. The portrait of St. Pio in this film reads more like a man racked with mental illness, than the man I know St. Pio to be...which is a man who fully surrendered his will to God. Shia experienced conversion during the making of this film, and his spiritual immaturity is definitely highlighted against the complexity of the real Padre Pio. I'm certain the portrayal of Padre Pio in 20 yrs from now (by Shia) would be more on point as he grows into his conversion. Nevertheless, his portrayal had an endearing child-like quality that should not be overlooked. In short, the failure of this movie was not Shia, it was with the writer and director. Neither the writer or director had a grasp on what this movie was supposed to be about. With that being said, I'm going to sound like I'm contradicting myself by saying if one can surrender their expectations of this film beforehand with a form of holy detachment…and just remain an impartial observer of a smattering of various independent broken lives (from a different but important era) the viewing experience can be very rewarding. After all, the messages conveyed in this film are very weighty in themselves- something we rarely see in movies these days.

I saw the movie online last evening and was deeply disappointed with it. It told nothing about Padre Pio's life story. It certainly showed a conflict between the Italian nationalists and the Italian communists but nothing on the spiritual life of this great saint. Seeing the sacrilegious acts take place in the movie was done for effect. Historically, the communists would've destroyed anything that was connected with the catholic church.

I just watched this movie. I knew nothing about Padre Pio or what was going to be in this movie. The trailers ive seen portrayed this differently so i wanted to watch it a long time ago. Well, its currently free to stream so i watched it and wished i didnt to some extent. Not many out there will relate to this but, i am dealing with spiritual attacks. This movie almost personified how my life has been, especially lately. I can gladly say Jesus has brought me so far, but i still struggle. This movie was more of a dive into the mind of someone in a spiritual battle than anything else. This movie was motivating, didnt give me hope, or even give strength in any way to combat the things around us all the time. The things i did enjoy, was his faith among the struggle, and one specific scene where he helped someone. The war parts of the movie, i felt were completely unrelated and shouldnt even have been included. The ending scene was powerful tho. As i said earlier, as someone dealing with spiritual warfare for a long time, this ending hit the nail on the head for the first time i actually experienced Jesus. This movie was almost a representation of the battles in my life. Although it depicted spirtual war well, id advise everyone to find Jesus from another route. Sorry this was so long. God bless you all and whoever reads this. He has not forgotten you, and he will always love you.

I watched this movie, thinking that it would be mostly about Padre Pio. It was mostly about the politics and injustice in his village after World War II. Didn’t know much about Padre Pio when I watched the movie and I still don’t know much about Padre Pio because you could take all of his scenes out of the movie and it wouldn’t change the movie at all. His scenes were insignificant to the movie and only covered an extremely short period of his life, like just a few weeks. it was a complete waste of my time and money, and I had someone watching it with me that I had hoped, would be interested in coming back to the church after watching it, and that backfired. I watched a couple of interviews with people about the making of the movie and how Shia LaBeouf became Catholic after spending time learning about Padre, Pio, and those interviews completely miss portrayed, the concept of the movie. I have watched the PG version of father Stu, and it was good but the interviews I’ve seen by Mark Wahlberg, and the bishop in Montana gave me more information about father Stu after he became a priest, then the movie did. The movie is more about him, changing his life and becoming a priest, but the impact, after he became a priest was very significant, and they didn’t show very much of that.

Fully agree, there are better movies or docu's out there about St. Padre Pio .. it's also as you point out a matter of principle .. From the many interviews, the many testimonies, the many books, we see a very different picture of the Saint, a man with character, with personality, but with strong theology, obedient to the church, protective of his parish, that did not allow evil to grow or ruminate, he was not void of a sense of humor. He was not void of sadness of fear of emotions. But he was adamant and heroic in virtue. Let me tell you a personal anecdote: He once appeared to me in a dream. I have a few pictures of him around and an artistic rendition of his portrait Ive made. I love him alot. It was at a time I did not expect to dream about him at all. When I saw him, clear as day. I was expecting him to be harsh with me, but it was unlike anything I had ever felt, a presence of love, he invited me into a small chapel were a stand was prepared with a book of psalms or a small bible and outside it was sunny, a sunny courtyard, with children running and playing, and he invited me to stay in the shade of the chapel and to open the book and pray or read. While he went away after the children outside. I don't remember his voice. But I will never forget the immensity of this all pervading love I felt, which I did not expect to feel. Yes he was perceived stern in some matters, and principled but it was rooted in love and all suffering, each and every miracle attributed to him was rooted in suffering he took upon himself... he was the embodiment of prayer, of love of obedience and all suffering. God rejoices in him. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, One God Amen. May trough the prayers and the intercession of Saint Padre Pio, and all the Saints in Heaven and the Holy Mother of God, all our sins be forgiven, all our infirmities of mind body and soul be healed, all our prayers be heard, all requests that are good to us and our loved ones be granted, all our lives be blessed and protected from all evil. And when the hour of our end comes, all our souls be saved. Amen

Think of the Exorcist. One of the most popular movies of all time. Is it appropriate for Catholics to hold in high reverence? Absolutely not. But, does it portray Catholic ideas and point towards wisdom therein? Absolutely. The movie makes people who may be resistant, or even hostile (as so many are nowaday) to not immediately be repulsed. It hits them on their level, thus they may be more receptive towards it. I recall seeing the Exorcist when i was irreligious and young but still coming out of the movie thinking: what was that trying to say? That's what is important.

I organized an event for the young adults at my parish to go see this. We ended up having a crossover episode with another young adult group for another parish. All in all, we were pretty disappointed by the film. Not really just because of the sacrilege, but the shaky camera work, the lame side story that basically has nothing to do with the rest of the film, and ethos of sympathy towards the communist protagonists of the film. The best parts of the film were every single scene with Shia actually in it playing Pio. Those scenes were actually really great! Imo. I couldn’t agree more with you that calling it Padre Pio is a misnomer. He was barely in it. Also no levitation scene like in the trailer. I was hoping to see a movie about a young Pio, perhaps going through the times and trials of being a young priest, but the movie was just…not…that. Great video Amber! Ngl I wished you liked Fr. Stu as that film very much played a role in my reversion and portrays conversion and young male adulthood in the context of modernity, but to each their own. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Great suggestions for alternative films at the end. I think you did well. I was reading about the film on Wikipedia and I was surprised how it seems largely fictional. I have read a very good biography of Padre Pio by an Italian journalist, Renzo Allegri, which was published around his beatification time, and it doesn`t match what I have read about him there! If you want to read a good biography of Padre Pio, I can recommend that one, it was also published in English, with the title "Padre Pio: Man of Hope", the author interviewed lots of people who had met Padre Pio personally and tried to tell his life story the most possible accurate way. Padre Pio was once described as a "Middle Ages saint in the 20th century". In a certain sense this description makes sense, he reminds a lot of ancient mystics, like St. Francis of Assisi, who also had stigmata, and was also a deep mystic. But he was also a man of his time, he founded a very good hospital in Pietrelcina, that still exists, he opposed fascism, because he saw all the negative aspects of it, he also opposed communism, specially after World War II, when the communists became the second largest party in Italy, after the Christian Democracy, despite the fact that he wasn`t by any means a very political person. He also accepted the Vatican Council II, despite some claims otherwise. Unfortunately he faced lots of slanders which lead to his life being investigate by the Vatican, but fortunately he was totally cleared by the end of his lifetime. The book has several disturbing details, like his struggles with tentation, who are never described, and I think it was a mistake of this film to go for it, they could have left it to people`s imagination, there was no need to go for nudity - and because of that I don`t think Padre Pio himself would ever have approved of the film. I`m glad the film converted Shia LaBouef to Catholicism, and I hope he will take his new faith seriously, but I`m afraid he looks too juvenile for the role, even of a younger Padre Pio. The film was also very badly received by critics, even secular, and some Catholic commentators also raised the same objections of you to the film. There is the Italian film that you mentioned, it seems much better, at least, it definetely tries to be more accurate, it was based in the biography by Renzo Allegri that I have read and I widely recommend the book to anyone who wants to know the life story of Padre Pio. I haven`t seen the Italian film, I will try to watch it online, its much better rated in imdb than the recent American one, so hopefully its worth watching it. If some decent Hollywood director wants to do a really good film about the life of Padre Pio I would suggest to start by the Renzo Allegri, or any other good biography of him. I`m sure you will appreciate Renzo Allegri`s biography, if you haven`t read it yet. P.S. - I`m sorry if my comment is too long!

The first point is chronological bias. The idea that the body was not sexual ones in the past because we don’t see that from our personal vantage point is actually false. Many righteous persons saw those old images, which we see now as art, as sacrilegious and impure. There was no generation which held the body as purely an artistic structure, it was always culpable and connected to sex, or at least, it is very hard to show and argue that it wasn’t. The point is basically a non-argument or reason. I’ve heard this implied many times, but you have to consider something critical: mainly, that human nature is human nature in all times, pornography then, yes, can be art now, but that’s the very desensitization which ensues given our temporal separation. It's not actually realism. So in order to aknowledge the fact our existence isn't nothing but roses, we have to make the opposite error and claim everything is darkness instead? The world isn't perfect but it is also not evil (as the Gnostic heresy claimed) and what is good in it is a reflection of a reality, that of the divine, which is actually infinitely more "real" than anything in this world. The claim that the more dark or depraved something is, the more "real" it is it's actually to promote satanism, for in truth evil is an "unreality" and the closer you get to it the more illusory and ephemeral things become.

Ot may bring some secular people to take an interest in Catholicism further, which may plant a seed and eventually play a part in them coming to faith. This seems to be what happened for Shia himself.

I loved Miracle Man. Except he was celebrating Novis Ordo mass. He wasn't alive to see the Novis Ordo.

I certainly wish the movie showed more of Pio's life & miracles attributed to him, the movie actually wasn't about him as much as the slaughter that happened in that town, the temptations of the devil stuff wasn't that bad, if that was off-putting to you, I don't know if the path of a saint is for you...I mean this plus your views on Father Stu really makes you come-off as a prude, we have to tell real stories, editing out all of the vulgarity that one will experience becoming a saint, by means of spiritual attack, is to neuter reality, I prefer the brutality of life, and many of the early saints were extremely harsh with their acolytes.

In this city there is a priest who has gifts like Padre Pio and in confession he tells you your sins in the form of a question, it is a gift of prophecy, there is no doubt that Padre Pio was also like that. God bless you. Google traslator.
