Wow, gorgeous scenery! Way better than AZ! South Dakota is now on my bucket list. Some of the things that makes it so beautiful (aside from the scenery) is the absence of people, it's capaciousness, and it's solitude. I am so, so finished with city life, but I am stuck here for now. Your videos give, at least, a moments reprieve from the chaos. Thank you! I'm sure we'll see you and Mariah soon. Take care. :)

The YT algorithm just presented your video on my YT homepage. I watched this and loved it for the landscape, your personality and your editing. Also your philosophical views on vanlife that I discovered watching your earlier videos. I love how you've traveled all over the world and visited my own country, The Netherlands, a few times. As traveler myself I have found that experience life in the various countries gives you a diverse view on life in general. The past few years I have traveled a lot around Europe in my OpelComby (Promaster City) type vanbuild and love it very much as a parttime van traveler. Thank you for your videos, it is going to be a joy watching your travels.

Stopped at the badlands and drove the loop.Stayed over night at the cliff over looking the Bad lands. Did the domicile thing in SD got my license, physical addresses, plates. Went on to Devils tower, then through Yellowstone , Idaho and final stop for the summer in Washington. Awesome drive, never ending beautiful county out this way. Enjoy your travels!

the opening scene, changing the license plates on your van, felt so ominous. I love the fireplace / pit 10:00. Also love the observation, "...people hang around the main plaza for a while and...then....just...leave". I remember visiting So. Dakota with my parents when I was a kid in the early 1970's. Traveling West from our home in rural Minnesota, we stopped at all the tourist attractions along the way to Yellowstone. At Mt. Rushmore, I remember walking down close like you did...it was really cool. Visited Wall Drug, Spearfish and, the Crazy Horse monument too...such as it was at the time. This vid makes me want go back. Oh, and Finn shows up with Mariah...looking forward to seeing that. Safe travels. Thanks for taking us along.

@@annauncharted I don’t know if you should have talked about it. Your channel, to date, is about your joy in discovery and self reliance. The carving on the mountain was done, and the land around it preserved, before you and I were even born. I don’t get to travel often, but when I do, there’s always something about the natural environment that was or is being destroyed. When I visited The Olympic National Park in 2001, I saw entire mountains clear cut down to bare earth. Nothing held the soils on the mountains. You could see it being blown away by winds and washed off into adjacent lakes, suffocating the fish. I asked locals about it. They said, it’s the only way timber harvesting can be done. I differed emphatically and pointed to hundreds of years of profitable timber harvesting in Maine, and that it is often the lumber industry in Maine who helps write laws about forest management, which does NOT allow any clear cutting. It’s simply easier and quicker to clear cut, but clear cutting a whole mountain will completely eliminate any further harvesting for well over a century. And it’s ugly, I said, so how does it help you keep tourist businesses open? I strongly suggested they gather with other businesses and lobby to make timber companies on the west coast follow the east coast methods. But if I had a channel back then, is it the topic I should speak of? My journal makes mention of this, but mostly covers other aspects of my trip, which was profoundly spiritual and serendipitous…and yet, this image and my conversation is what my mind held on to most clearly twenty + years later. That and women who thought I was nuts to travel alone as I was doing. Haha! I think it’s very hard and courageous to take on issues as a creative person. It’s a hard job being the poop-carrier for society, because pointing out the dumb, the hateful, the sad, and the short-sighted often draws unwanted responses. Only you can decide if an issue of any kind should find a way into your videos. In my case, I know I’m too heated about some topics to ever make a positive difference. On other topics, I’m too heartbroken about it to find any words. So in my mind, it’s a matter of calling, readiness and skill that’s required for taking on issues. Travelers learn so much about the world and people. Most people only see the dream of travel or the potential for basic challenges like missing a flight, or having something stolen. But many don’t realize that travelers see people and the natural world presenting ethical issues over and again. It changes us. I think every traveler needs to speak of it somehow, but should it be public? I think it’s a very personal decision. And I still think focusing on the beauty and the people was beautiful and joyful. And that’s important too. It’s your life and your legacy too. 💗

You're not crazy; SoDak is wonderful. It was my old stomping grounds over 40 years ago. Some things haven't changed: Winters can be harsh...even in the 'Banana Belt' around Rapid City, and summers can be really hot...but it is a dry heat LOL. But in the spring the badlands wildflowers smell wonderful and I still miss the sound of the wind in the trees in the Black Hills.

South Dakota really is a beautiful place. I went there 4 times before I saw Mount Rushmore only once on the first trip though. I think you're right people don't want to walk up all those steps. It wasn't busy when I went there I took the tour & I learned a lot of new things. Good luck in your new state. You should think about getting 2 winches for the front & back of your van just in case you get stuck in the future they do come in handy.

I always fill up before heading off into the forest. Peace of mind. When you were going up that dirt road I was yelling "commit commit commit!" and you did!!! I did that hike at Mount Rushmore. Very very cool! You really are living the dream. Good for you.

Welcome to my neck of the woods. The walking tour is definitely the best way to see Mt. Rushmore. I hope that you through Huett, Wyoming, and check out Devil's Tower. Outside of Billings, Montana Little Bighorn National Park. If you're in Montana, checkout the free camping near the rivers. Safe travels

After the D & H Trial-you popped up on my feed. I have binge watching your adventure for 3 days-trying to catch up. Thank you for making me smile-laugh-weep and remember all the beautiful moments of life traveling and the down moments especially of repairs. UGH! I was fortunate in having a career that took me though out Colorado, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico for 21 years. So I designed my work with exploring all the hot springs in all those areas..for healing and being immersed in Nature. I miss it dearly but you have rekindled those memories and areas I loved and returned too many times. Thanks for your blog Anna,. Be safe and positive....

I’m so glad you’ve fallen in love with a place. I think South Dakota is quite amazing. Since you’re such a reader, you might enjoy Linda Hasselstrom. She writes poetry, essay, and memoir, and is from and lives in Hermosa, South Dakota. I think my favorite of hers are Dakota Bones, a collection of some of her poetry, and Windbreak, a memoir. Hope you are well!

Black Hills resident here (although soon I'll be beginning my van journey-building out now!) The Black Hills are gorgeous. For the avid hiker, biker, or rock climber I would put us in the "best kept secret spots" category. We have hundreds of miles of trails through the hills, and many beautiful canyons. Just don't come in early August, or you'll be sharing the hills with 400,000+ motorcycles. Also, it's illegal to stay over night in the rest areas, even if some aren't enforced. Love your content!

Hey Anna. I have watched so many Van life videos now and I have to say without a doubt, yours are the most down to earth, realistic, funny and honest videos on KZfaq. It is so refreshing to find a video that was the very reason KZfaq was created in the first place. And thank you so much for not resorting to click bait thumbnails where you are posed in some seemingly provocative pose on your camp bed or just out and out flaunting it for views (DISCLAIMER: not that doing all of that in anyway disrespects the people that do actually do all of that. I myself have been known every now and an again to try and flaunt it, especially in my younger years). Anyway, back to the Video. I so wish that my ancestors had moved over to the US. I would love to be able to by a van and road trip it for a year or 2 over there, you have to most incredible places and scenery but Unfortunately for me, being British means that I can do 3 months over there then i have leave. Van life in the UK doesn't have quite the appeal that it does where you are. I will use my lunch times as a break from my boring office job to watch your videos and follow your adventures and dream of life on the open road.
