Clay, the comment you made about "giving your blessing to use whatever grip feels great and gives you good ball flight" was very timely for me, thank you! Such great advice.

I found this video because yesterday while playing, I became so frustrated after months of increasingly inconsistent and weak contact that I just moved my left hand into a position that felt 'natural' (much stronger). Instantly I began making way better contact with straighter more penetrative ball flight. For months I have been trying to get the 'right' grip when what I really needed was 'the right grip for me'. Watching all of the advice online it is easy to forget that we are all different and we must find what works for us!

This is really great feedback. We hear time and time again that the “V’s” our hands form on the grip must always both point at our right armpit. Obviously not the case here. Like this flexibility and the recommendation that we can tweak grip to ball flight. Bravo!

Used to do this exact thing then switched to Jack Nicklaus’s grip he teaches in fundamentals. Dropped 10+ strokes a round now and it’s a much easier swing. For some reason, a strong grip hurts my back after a few swings.

Excellent video Clay is it possible to have a slightly weak grip or neutral grip with the left hand and have a strong right hand grip ????

I was at the range today and just for shits and giggles, I tried hitting my irons with a bowed left wrist. I couldn’t believe how effortless and far it went. I think I’ll be trying this grip in a couple of weeks. Playing in the American golf festival in Vegas next week and I don’t wanna change it till after the tournament.

I’ve found a strong left hand grip leads to an occasional hook. A weak grip with a bowed or flat left wrist eliminates that risk.

I find that i tend to over release with a neutral grip, not on purpose but instincts just take over and get hooky overdrawing shots, i tend to hit it straight and slight pulls and pushes with a strong grip,

Great video, Clay, as always. I've always felt that a strong grip is more powerful and gave me more confidence. I noticed how John Daly and David Duval could stripe the ball with a strong grip. However, I listened to too many golf professionals online saying that a strong grip is bad. So, I learned to hit with a slightly weaker grip just like Johnny Miller advocated. That is until I hurt my wrist a couple of times. This was due to hitting too deep into the ground off of a massive upslope. I learned later that the bowed weak grip is not a stable grip and may cause injury for those gougers like myself. I later came across some videos by Shawn Clement who advocates a strong grip. He talks about the karate chop (strong grip) being more powerful than the back slap (weak grip). It takes a little time to get used to the super strong grip, but, once it clicks in your brain, you will feel really confident with it. Would you recommend using a super strong grip with the putter?

Strong grips are great for players with good flexibility. It requires that you’re able to have open hips, and lots of right side bend through impact. Like DJ. He can even hit a cut with a strong grip, because of his amazing flexibility.

@@jamiesloan7259 Good point. I definitely don't have the flexibility of DJ. I'm way older and way shorter. I'm more of an arm thrower, like Mike Austin and Fred Couples, as opposed to a turn-the-corner, like Ben Hogan and Dustin Johnson. I learned how to time the arm throw well, I guess. Although the occasional "march" (right-left-right) does creep up during the round.

Clay, what grip is wise to use . when you fade to slice with a driver, i go strong grip but with irons i pull hook, so i switch to a weaker grip. ive been going back n forth. its kinda annoying. which grip would you recommend. neutral ? or is it ok to do both different grips. recommendation.

Is it normal to have a different type of grip for different club selections on a normal lie? What about on a uphill or downhill lie should you adjust grip?

Hello Clay I've been a subscriber for many years maybe even before Rick Shiels I saw you today at a driving range the old guy hitting in front of you. If you witnessed any of my shots would you have any suggestions? Thanks recognized your voice right away

Find a grip that makes it easy to work the ball either direction. Fade, or draw. For me…. That’s somewhere between weak, and neutral. Basically Tiger’s grip. I’ll barely tweak it if I’m trying to eliminate one side of the fairway. If it’s wide open on the right, and OB left, I’ll purposely grip the club a touch weaker. Or vice versa…. Pond all the way up the right side, and no trouble left, I’m purposely gripping it a tad stronger.
