I've played the missions from this set with a friend recently. I've used count as terrain and a count as for Varas, it's was fun, but I fell that some of the missions were a bit of a pain, be that for the Ultramarines side or Tyranids. Once you have a bunch of these spore mines on the table, your movement phase gets pretty annoying, what I did is put my friend to also roll the scatter and D6 so we wouldn't be waiting a lot. Overall people get a pretty idea from how to play Warhammer from this set, but I prefer Black Reach(even though it didn't had a campaign and the Ork Side was a little bit underwhelmed in points, which can be easily fixed adding another unit of boys, or another unit of Deathkoptas or even removing one of the units that has the point costs for the Marines(I can't remember which right now). I feel like even though Black Reach didn't had terrain, it was a more versatile set as a "starter one". Some of the exclusive sculpts are also better than this set. I guess they will be releasing it next year, unfortunately, GW doesn't release with the older manuals or all the paper instructions that came with these boxes. A shame for some of the collectors and people who enjoy middlehammer.

Hard pass from me too. - If it came with rules, it could as you say be a fun stand alone game allowing players to relive 4th edition. But it doesn't - If it was released at the same cost as when it first released, it could be a great little way to encourage first time hobbyists to the game as the current starter sets can be a little on the expensive side for anyone uncertain of if they actually want to commit to the hobby. - If it was something more interesting like speeders, a land raider, tyrannic war veterans or assault marines, it could have been a cool box to relive. But i found this box boring at the time and it's boring now. I mean, just troops. Yawn. Instead its an overpriced, boring and pointless re-release as you don't get any rules to revisit 4th, you can get much more interesting and modern models for less in the 10th edition starter set and the idea of paying twice as much as back in the day for a box containing less content is just ludicrous to me. Its the same reason i'm not interest in Old World as they are rerelease old models that they once considered not worthy of selling (when they ditched Warhammer,) And I know they will charge modern prices for that old tat. It's only good for the nostalgia, which is fine, but don't overcharge us for this shit. Or do nostalgia in an interesting way. Maybe release the same content but using newer models (aka primaris marines and brand new nids) with a new sculp for the pilot and the scenery.

I bought 3 of these sets back in the day when my kids and I were playing 40k on the kitchen table. The set was cool and we had a blast, They got older and lost interest so I am the holder of multi-sets with extras. GW is asking way too much so in my opinion I think 65 - 70 dollar price tag US would be a fair price but not 100+ dollars, I believe the UK price would be about 50lbs. Like you I have spares galore, I still have a full company of Tac Squads from this set (60 marines). The space marines are in bags in a box all their own. Plus all the other stuff too. If GW would drop the price I think this set would sell pretty well. A pass for me as well.

"Re-issued in Black Reach" is a little inaccurate re the bolter tactical Marines. They were improved for the 5th edition starter box, with added details, ornamentation and a mixture of armour marks, for example the missile launcher having a Mk5 helmet. That last part is particularly important to me, and a reason why I prefer the older models to the new Primaris stuff. But I do agree that the lieutenant and the wreck are the only reasons I would get the box, and they can certainly be found cheaper online for just those parts. Besides, I have 3D printers and can make an approximation of the latter as per your mention.

The price on minis alone meets the mark. Tac squad - £35 (35) Genestealrs (£32.5 for 10, so lets half that for) - £16.25 (51.25) Gaunts - £25.50 (76.75) GW no longer sell spore mines? I'm seeing them going 3rd party for £17 - so lets say £93.75 (theres also some that come with the SPOROCYST AND MUCOLID SPORE kit, but eh) After that, the old terrain, pilot, pylons, and nid pit things are "free", they will go for like £30-50 on ebay maybe 40k is expensive, but this honestly isn't bad compared to what it could be

Leviathan (people still can't decide if it's a starter or not) was the best looking for purely models in the starter of the primaris era imo. .

I actually missed this boxed set the first time round, I'm pleasantly surprised at the price (in AUD) I know it's probably a price gouge compared to the original but for $250 you get a some non-MK10 marines (a big win) and some tyranids, the terrain is just a bonus at that point. As GW kill off more and more non-MK10 armoured marines, sets like this and made to order runs are for me going to be the way forward to expand my collection. You mention eBay, and I have seen other channels with rescued miniatures, but in Australia at least it seems that all the listings end up higher than new cost with postage, and the "pro-painted" offerings all seem to be well painted (but not in a scheme that fits my army) and exorbitantly priced, or painted terribly and still asking high prices.

4th Edition is the one I started in (at least started playing). I remember this box, never had one, though my friend got it. I love Oldhammer, I collect old stuff as well as getting some new things, so I should be the perfect target audience for the set. Well, I'm not buying it. Part of the reason being the fact that earlier this year I actually got most of this box (I had some stuff from it before, like generators and beacon) except for the tyranid part. And even though it is considered a collector item (until it's re-released, since the re-release will bring more items to the market), I got it all cheaper than it would've costed me from GW with their price. Way cheaper, like, I can easily purchase tyranids part and still the total price would be lower. But I'm pretty sure that if it wouldn't have been the issue, if I didn't have the set -- it would've been a pass for me nonetheless. The price is ridiculous for this set, the lack of the original scenario book doesn't help either (glad I got one myself). Even funnier is the fact they've announced this box a day before they showed the Dark Angels upcoming releases, including huge Deathwing Assault box. I'd also drifted out of 40k by the time 4th edition rolled around, so there's no real nostalgia in play - although if I was gaming rather than just painting, the terrain would be a draw. The minis (aside from the handsome Lt Varras, I love 'accessory' minis that draw on the broader lore of 40k rather than just being yet another trooper of whatever kind the army fields - similar to the space marine armies in old battle reports where they'd have a primaris psyker along for the ride) don't seem anything special, just serviceable renditions of marines and bugs - I didn't even realise until you zoomed in and started describing them that the marines weren't just reuses of the 3rd edition tacticals. Fair play to anyone who was engaged in that era though and fancies the set - if it does well and GW do further nostalgia rereleases, I'd be all over Dark Vengeance with all those chaos minis.

I don't understand why they remade the box. It's cool, but it's only for collectors, at least for the marine players.

Showing the new DA box shortly after this announcement is a head slap moment - I’ll be getting that instead
@bradp64527 ай бұрын
Price is very high. Still have the set including the box and rules. I think I paid like 48 dollars new and now they want 150 which seems crazy. This set is really more like a kill team set now which would have been a better way of using it then just printing the models with no rules.

As much as i adore this era of 40k (3rd-5th was glorious), and I love this starter set for its narrative focus and gorgeous terrain... I wont be getting it. I'd only be tempted by the crashed Aquila Lander (which i already bought off eBay) and the pilot (whom i can get for cheaper than £90). As much as I genuinely love the sculpts of this era, i don't collect either Tyranids nor Space Marines. Even if I did, I could get second-hand armies at a much better price. This said, I am happy to see GW re-releasing old starter sets, and old kits from this era in general. I'd love to see a run of old terrain from this era, such as the Fortress of Redemption or the Imperial Sector.

I mostly collect metal, but a big point of contention with this thing is whether or not Firstborn are going to be relevant for much longer. I feel like GW will never fully squat Firstborn, but they're already borderline irrelevant in the current rules and a lot of their models got discontinued in 10th. Why purchase and paint another tactical squad if its going to be useless on the battlefield and the set doesn't come with any unique rules or scenarios for standalone play?

Well said

Honestly my bet is they are going to use this not selling like crack as the excuse to us for legending the firstborns and saying if you didn't want that to happen we should have bought the box
@Miniscape-wh40k7 ай бұрын
Fair enough. I think legending them is on the cards but if they do it for that reason then they would be ignoring that the firstborn tactical squad is still selling well. Idk we'll see.

@@Miniscape-wh40k See they are committed to killing firstborn at this point as they had the cake and eat it too scenario on the table and ignore it we don't need 40k to ever give us a new firstborn ever again since 30k would cover it but they have basically removed any compatibility between the two games at this point right after a lot of people just bought the new plastic kits for 30k for units they always wanted but couldn't afford the resin prices Also I still think primaris are a huge mistake as they turn marines from a beginner friendly army into just worse aspect warriors

I've never understood the appeal of the crashed lander terrain. But thats me.
@SlabBulkhead7 ай бұрын
I think the appeal is that, like the navy mini, it's something you never really saw in 40k back then. A slice of the universe that was only accessible through lore. But now we've got breacher kill teams and other oddball stuff like that it's lost some of its uniqueness. There also wasn't much official terrain at all back then. Compared to the jungle trees (still unpainted in my bits box twenty years later!) it was very impressive.

@@SlabBulkheadAlso a massive jump in quality compared to the 3rd edition plastic ruins (also unpainted sitting in a bits box!)

I don't know why anyone would want to buy "new" a set that GW is orphaning with haste. I have 20K (in some version of 40K) of "old" marines already that includes some RT models. I like the new size marines.

$150 is absurd for a set that used to cost $45 back in 2004.... inflation since 2004 is 68% not 333%. adjusted for inflation plus a small increase to account for smaller scale production, the correct cost for this box set would be $85-$90, not $150. Im sick of companies blatantly price gouging then blaming it on inflation. GW has been charging 50% higher prices than inflation dictates for most things just out of sheer greed.
