I tried that “orchid pot” and to this date it is collecting dust in my basement storage. As for the pon… I used it as a bottom layer, a full medium and also in a mix and each time I had root issues. Thank you for always showing the good, bad and ugly of orchid and plant growing. I love going on these journeys with you and learning from your experiences!

I appreciate that you stayed true to your feelings. I love your science experiments, but it would be sad to see another orchid go through a process that seems like it would end in shock and set-back.

Hey darling, it works peeeeerfectly with Zygopetalum and Slipper Orchids . This is my first comment btw. You taught me everything to know about orchids and I have been following you for about 2 years now. Since then I have about 100 orchids and like 200 seedlings. Couldn't have done it without you...wish I could show you pictures

Have to agree, my paph struggled for years in different media/growing methods until I stumbled upon one of their older models for only $5 and tried it. That's the only orchid I grow SH and it's now healthy and happy.

Dear Dani, can you please try to put the Lechuza orchidpon in water for a day and then measure the pH and microSiemens levels? In that way we can find out if it burns the roots. Thank you. Kisses XX

I do use Orchidpon for more than a year. My paphiopedilum really love it. As top layer to prevent algy I use colomi orchid minerals. I really like this combination.

I had a Phal in the lechuza pots with the pon. After watching this I had a worry about the one I had so took it out the pot and found very few black roots and lots of dead roots. I found one alive which had started in the pon and was growing out of the pot. Luckily there was a lot of roots outside the pot. I’ve now repotted it in the same pot but with my usual media so hoping it will be ok. I’m so happy I saw this video.

Luv all your videos, Thank you so much! I started out with one orchid when I started watching you, well I now have 12 orchids, 3 different types! Hubby made me an awesome table for them and even brings me home another orchid if he is out! Question, how do you water a mini phal that's in glass? How do you fertilize it? My little mini is doing great, is just in sphagnum moss and a glass container. Thank you!

Hi Danny! Thanks for the nice video, enjoyed it while sipping my tea. I can share some of my learning from using Pon and similar products as well as watching KZfaq: - I also observed the orange pearls in the Pon. These appear to be the slow-release fertilizer by Lechuza (compared the beans, look very much the same). They do not float, which makes sense as they are supposed to go in the water reservoir for re-fertilizing later on. - I do not know if there is more fertilizer inside the medium. - Pon works nicely for heavy-feeders as a base layer. That is the only way I use it and can actually recommend. - Issues with Pon are well documented (see e.g. a very active German Plants/Gardening-KZfaqr ) - There are alternatives to Pon that are not pre-fertilized. I don't like advertising but see no way around it here: maybe try out the "Vulkatec Kakteenerde Premium", which follows a similar composition as Pon and is not pre-fertilized. If this is not available for you, then hopefully you can find a similar product. - All these mineral-based products are recommended to be properly washed before using them directly on more delicate plants. I hope this helps!

Hi Dani, I tried the orchid pon a few days after you started your experiment since I had already wanted to test it out. I put 2 mini Phaelenosis in the pon. I used a clear plastic nursery pot with a cache pot and just used it as a substrate, not as a self watering or semi hydro set up. The roots inside the pot are doing just fine, but I have noticed the ones on the top don’t look all that well, they are still plump and sort of green, but they seem to have a whitish veil, and like you said, the root tip has turned brown. I never had this happen with the Seramis I have been using for the rest of my +60 orchids. All the roots making it down in the Seramis look pretty healthy, with nice green root tips. Even my Cattleya orchids seem to like it. I really like the look of the pon, but I don’t think I will be trying it on my other orchids. I will however be trying it with my Aroids, at least not the expensive ones 😀 I have a Philodendron mayoi in dire need of repotting…. wishing you a nice X-mas🤶 🎄

I am using AIRY Base Mineralsubstrat, which looks awfully similar to that pon. I have potted one paphiopedilum and one phragmipedium and they are growing new roots, they doing great after a few months. I also have one miltoniopsis which I recently potted and the new growth has new roots coming out . After seeing this video, I'm kind of nervous for this orchid.

Really enjoy your videos. I have become the inadvertent orchid grower. I ordered an orchid for my wife last year (2 plants in one nice container). We were in the middle of an incredibly cold Valentine’s Day and they arrived shattered and frost bitten. I called the company and very nicely they replaced. Arrived next day same scenario. Called again and replaced. Total of 6 plants one bloomed. I have rescued all and have spikes on 5, but not tall, only about 8 -10 inches, all showing buds. Vibrant green and all producing leaves. Fertilized, good light and constant upper 60’s lower 70’s ambient temp. Should I cut off spikes and let plant regain strength or let them bloom? .
@cristiaolson7327
@cristiaolson7327 2 жыл бұрын
To cut or keep a spike is personal choice. Leaving green spikes on improves your chances of a sooner bloom or of getting both a new spike and the secondary spikes to bloom in the same year (so, flowers more often or in greater quantity). Cutting the spike allows the plant to put more energy into a brand new spike (so, potentially larger flowers). Both choices are valid, it just depends on if you want frequent flowers or bigger flowers.
@tomostrander5070
@tomostrander5070 2 жыл бұрын
@@cristiaolson7327 Thanks so much. I can tell already that the flowers are going to be smaller but have about 5 buds per spike. I think I will let them bloom and note what each produces. Next year redirect bloom energy to the plant. Exciting stuff. Thanks again for reading and responding. Peace.

I am so heart broken, I wish that I had find this video sooner. I potted my favorite orchid in the lechuza orchid kit last week. After watching this video I immediately checked on her and it was horrific!! I had to remove over 2/3 of her roots. She was so healthy before I reported her into the lechuza. . I just repotted her in a 5 in repot me clear pot, using the only medium that I was able to get my hands on right away (E.B stones all organic orchid potting mix) I hope it survives. 😭

Help! I have an orchid that has lived for about a year! It was doing great, the roots grew and I even got a new shoot, stem(?). But for some reason it is now dying and I really don’t know what to do. The leaves all fell off and the original stem is starting to die. Is there anyway I can rescue it?

If you’ve lost all the leaves, I don’t think it can survive because it has no way to do photosynthesis. Something similar happened to one of my phals, it got crown rot & then some kind of fungus, & I realized it too late 😢

Why not just DIY pon? That way it'll be fertilizer-free. Pon is simply a mixture of lava rocks, pumice, and zeolite. I typically make my DIY pon with 2 parts lava rocks, 2-4 parts pumice, and 1 part zeolite.

I don´t know if anyone will read this as the video is quite old. But lechuza now has a basic pon that is without fertilizer. I didn´t try it, but now I´m curious to put a orchid in it. Will never risk it with normal pon thoug :D
@aniliname
@aniliname 2 жыл бұрын
Do you wash your pon before using it? That's quite important. It has a thick nasty layer of dust and I've found some plants really hate being exposed to it. I've started boiling my pon and I feel that also removes a lot of the fertilizer deposits in it. In general with pon, the minerals and salts typically float to the top and create a little crystalline layer. That’s why it’s good to flush or spray down that top layer regularly to keep it from getting too dense and causing damage to plants with aerial roots. I'm not really convinced it's ideal for phalaenopsis orchids. I'm testing it out on zygopetalums and paphiopedalums and so far so good, let's see. It is really great for aeroids, though. I have some in self-watering, most in regular pots as a regular substrate substitute and I'm constantly amazed by how much they thrive in it.

Hi Danny, It is exciting to see your experiments on those Lechuza orchid pots. I brought 3 of those pots (red, white and purple) in 2018. The white one is very easy to get alga. However, the purple and red ones do not let light pass through, so the inner pot does not accumulate alga. The orchid Pon media provided in the package is bad, not suitable for my orchid. I put my Miltoniopsis in the Pon, and all roots get burned. Now I only use this orchid pot for hydroponic growing. I tried to use pon to grow my streptocarpus, and the end result was fantastic. In my view, pon is more suitable for non-orchid house plants. I have been watching your channel for several years; this is the first time I have left comments on your videos. I actually come from China. I have learnt a lot from you, and I want to send some thanks presents to you if you could let me know your address.

I used the regular pon (not orchid-pon) for a Dendrobium miyakei and it seems to have worked. The fertilizer is mostly in the osmocote pearls but I tested it and even after removing all of the slow-release fert, the yS (my keyboard does not have My lol) value did rise. From 10 to 294 with the pearls (1 Teaespoon and 50ml of water in 24hrs) and from 10 to 138 without the beads. I only did this test once though with a rather old measuring device so it is not representative and needs to be repeated with somthing more accurate.

Sometimes I get an announcement on my handy that you have done a video. I give an advance 'like' bcuz I know that I will like it. OK, when I see my 'like' signal, then I know that I have watched it already. Unfortunately, while I check this, the viewing red line begins to move and the video is running. Then I flip away from it and look for the newest one. OK, no new one. So, on your side you might think that a viewer is disinterested. That is not true. Also, sometimes I have viewed a video twice right through to the end because, why not, but the line should go from left to right, showing me that I have viewed until the end. Unfortunately, after 2 views, it still looks like I viewed it for some minutes and then had to go but I don't have time to view things until all the little lines behave. This a new problem for me and annoying. I might be doing something wrong. Anyone know anything about this? Orchid Girl don't be upset about technology. It is man-made. 🤔😄
