The world journalists agree. The MT09 is built to a price. Thanks to the Duke 7/890, Yamaha has pulled their socks up and the 2021 model now slots between those two bikes. But I found the torque and gearing of the MT09 were mint. That’s the only parts of the bike that I like when compared to my Street Triple R.

@@yammienoob Fair enough, I'm just thinking the suspension would be more than adequate for your average person wanting to have some fun in the twisties. Mind you i currently own an MT-07, which i heard the suspension is terrible. I find it to be pretty good for the street. I came from a 2015 ZX6R 636 with showa front forks before that. if you not trying to drag a knee around every corner, its fine.

@@yammienoob Exactly. I've got the XSR900 version of the bike, and it's an absolute fucking blast to ride. Brings me smiles all day long. I'm like the opposite of you; I'm not looking for a specialized tool for a specific use, I'm looking for a fun all-around street bike. I'm not looking to take it to the track - I mostly ride around town, commute occasionally, and take on the twisty backroads on the weekend at not even close to a 10/10 pace, and it's absolutely great for all those use cases. The XSR is torquey and fast and perfectly adequate in corners, and it makes me smile all day long all the places I take it. Maybe I'm not skilled or aggressive enough to feel the shortcomings of the suspension out on the backroads, but but you shouldn't be pushing it that hard on the street anyway, and like I said, I'm not using it as a track bike. I will say, I added some CRG shorty levers and they really improved the clutch and brake feel IMO.

I agree with some part of it..but calling it silly bike??? It feels silly when you say it's not worth to tune it for track..go and search the net to see what you can do with this superNaked beast. I know this is 3 yrs old and I cant figure how the heck I missed it! I bought my first of the mt09 family in 2017 when I was a young lad of 63yrs old. I am 70 now and have a 2021 mt-09 sp. If you cant understand the fun of a bike like the mt09 maybe you belong on a Grom? I have been on the road since 1970 and enjoyed every bike I've owned...never owned an HD, rode one for a couple of hours in the early 70's and that was enough. Maybe the MT doesnt push all the right buttons for you, but this thing takes fun to a whole new level. I can cruise around like a sane senior, with the cruise on and just enjoying the ride. When I get tired of that I just twist the throttle and instantly I'm a delinquent senior! I love it...most fun I have ever had on 2 wheels. Maybe when I'm old I'll get an HD...on second thought a URAL Patrol with a dummy machine gun mounted on the hack would be fun...bet I would be the only kid in town with one🤣

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree, being 55 years old I have ridden a ton of different types of bikes. The 09 carves the turns well enough unless you're trying to be a street Rossi. It has a comfortable riding position. I put a Conti TKC 70 on the rear and Shinko trail master on the front, so it does extremely well on smoother dirt/gravel surfaces. Done a couple of 1000 mile rides through all types of terrain and the motocross feel of the ergos makes it super versatile for low speed maneuvers and light canyon carving. All in all, if you only have one bike, this is the one.

I absolutely love mine. Yes it gets squirrelly cornering hard, the throttle is still a little choppy in sport mode, and the top speed is only about 135. BUT, it's a torque monster for the size and price and it's an absolute blast to ride everytime I hop on it. It's very comfortable and I rode it from PA to the Tail of the dragon and back and had no complaints. I Would I like to have a Super Duke 1290 one day though.

I love my 2015 FZ-09. Yeah, its has a lot of power, and at 68 years old I find myself doing things I probably shouldn't do. But for me its a fine street bike, not counting a sucky seat which I changed out. And with all the fun it provides, while giving me 50+mpg and low maintenance, its perfect for me. If you don't want all that power, then simply don't twist the throttle so much.

I think it’s funny that you’ve brought this up. I have a 2018 MT09 myself that I use to occasionally commute on. It really is A LOT of bike to handle every day, and regretfully I find myself incapable of NOT twisting the throttle like a maniac because the MT09 just begs for the rider to do so. Triple digit speeds are a near daily occurrence on the MT09, and the majority of the time i do wish I had just gotten the mt07 instead, because the 09 is just just so speed encouraging and it’s only a matter of time before my license gets taken away because of it. Great video, you hit the nail right on the head with this one

I've owned a 2017 mt09 it's a really fun bike when you want to ride like an ass and hooning around but every time you want to ride seriously on the twisty road it leaves you to desire more because the bike doesn't feel well cornering in higher speeds or it's really annoying bike when you just want to get home after a long day or early in the morning because the throttle is too snappy and clunky it makes my 2017 rsv4 feel like a totally reasonable commuter bike. Mt09 is just a toy bike with cheap thrills it gets boring very fast and you left wanting something more dedicated and better, it's just like a supermoto bike it's fun to have it as a side bike but for everyday use it sucks.

XSR900 owner here. I bought the XSR because I wanted a powerplant different than the traditional high-revving 4 cylinder and the triple in the MT09/XSR900 fit the bill. I also prefer the XSR's looks over the MT. Plenty of power to keep a smile on my face but I'd have to agree that on the street its irrelevant (but so are many sportbikes). However its nice to have that power on tap for those glorious open roads or wherever you can rip on it safely. The triple does make for an awesome streetlight to streetlight type of bike. XSR is also comfortable "enough" for the long rides but could benefit from a better seat no doubt. I've taken the bike through some twisties and it does just fine. I'd say for a first or second bike or someone who just wants ONE bike, you can't go wrong with the MT09/XSR900. The XSR900 is my first street bike purchase and so far I love the bike. I try and find every excuse I can to ride it. Also A mode is just stupid and should be avoided. I love death machines for some reason.

I just bought a 2018 MT09 as a second bike to an Electra Glide police. I love the Yamaha for everything it does, that the Harley doesn't. I'm 58 and have been riding on the street for 40 years with LOTS of miles behind me. I rode sport bikes when I was in my 20s and wanted to recapture that sorta ride without having to be contorted and uncomfortable on an R6 or GSXR. the MT09 fits my needs perfectly... Okay, it's not a race bike with turn signals, and I'm good with that. But it does have better corning ability, and acceleration than the HD, which is why I bought it.

MT-09 owner here. I actually agree with most all of your points. I’m looking to get back into something European next year, but I have really, really enjoyed my time with the MT. One thing that I think gets especially overlooked when talking about bike power is how relative that can be when you take rider weight into account. I’m not here to say that it doesn’t have plenary of power, but as a 270ish lb guy, the power and torque feels very comfortable for me under daily riding. I can image lopping off 100+ lbs would make a pretty big difference though.

I bought a 2020 a year ago. The price was good, the power was good, and at my skill level it was the perfect blend of power I needed. For the type of commute riding I do it was perfect. As an XSR900 owner, I agree with much of what you said. Echoing what others have said, I think that motorcycle ownership trajectory is an important thing to emphasize as you are now on the other side of the "power and performance climax," if you will. I would liken it to when you get really good at a given video game and then using the most overpowered character, weapons, etc. gets boring, but I think you have to ride that overpowered motorcycle or do a few track days on an R1 to get there.

One thing I forgot to mention though, the GPR stabilizer makes that steering so much more palatable. Definitely recommend it as the first mod you do on the bike for the safety and the general feel after you do. Just don't strip your screws...thats some expensive aluminum...

Is the cornering really that unstable?? I’m on an HD sportster rn, and I can’t imagine it being anymore unstable at “high” speeds than this little sporty…do people just have really high expectations??
@FWLTYTWRS
@FWLTYTWRS Жыл бұрын
@@gilbertn60133 I think it's more of a torque issue. It took a while to get used to feathering the throttle. And with the higher position of the steering, it feels more at risk of high siding if you can't position yourself correctly. Hitting gravel in a corner makes the bike want to stand up, so the stabilizer really helps mellow out the little wobbles.

Great review. I haven't ridden a MT-09, but I recently put a few hundred miles on a XSR900. I thought the XSR was surprisingly comfortable after riding 400 miles in a day. Yes, it has more power than I need for street riding, but how much power you need is a matter of personal preference. Handling wasn't great, considering the light weight. Sound is another matter of preference. To me it sounds a lot like an old Detroit Diesel. Kind of cool but not my favorite.

I've owned the 2017 model and I hated it riding it on the street especially in traffic. It's not a very comfortable bike by any means nor it's smooth for the street. It's stupid bikes for people who want to ride like an ass hooning around and want something a bit more powerful than your typical supermoto. As yammie said it's a very fun bike but gets boring very fast which left me to desire something greater. I think the z900 is much superior bike for the purpose of "well priced naked street bike"

Great video! What I, as a long time loyal subscriber and viewer of your channel would like to see for the intermediate bike giveaway series, for you to get the KTM Duke 890 as well as a KTM 890 Adventure R and compare their on-road manners and what kind of rider should get either one. I would definitely like to see you get more into the adventure and dual sport type of bikes. With it you already having a drz400, Yamaha getting rid of the wr250r, Kawasaki releasing their klx300, in Honda releasing their new bikes, there's a lot to do there. Just an idea. I'm really happy to hear about what you're doing with the intermediate bike giveaway series. keep up the awesome content! I'm kindve biased because I bought my first Gen Fz 09 with performance Penske suspension front and back which happened to be tuned for my weight, akrapovic exhaust and a Bauce Ecu flash. I got a great price for it and its an absolute blast to ride. Maintain its line on curves. Have yet to track it but does well on mountain twisties here in NY/NJ. Absolute wheelie machine and hooligan of a bike.

I have a 21 street triple that I'm very happy with, love the ride, handling, just about everything, and have been looking for a 2nd bike, something different from the strip, something with character, that's simple, fun, easy to ride, and landed on the Ducati scrambler, probably the icon. Nice, easy going, fun, nimble ....... but then I read so many reviews about how crazy hot it is riding in warm/hot climate - I'm in Tucson, AZ-- so I started thinking about the mt-09, drove one few months ago at yamaha event, thought it was exactly what you describe in this video --- fun, hooligan, what a pisser, but I think I will get bored with that pretty quick. you have desert sled, same 803 engine as scrambler icon, what is your experience with the heat,,, thanks

I own and MT-09 (and R1250GS, previously owned gsxr 600,r6, 790). I've been wanting to get rid of it virtually every after ride since 2015 when I got it for 6K until recently. It has 32K miles now. What I hate about it is corner entry, mid corner, exit. So I agree with you 100% but I will tell you that you can dial in this bike to improve corner performance which involves fabricating dog bones yourself because you can't buy the proper length in the market. Anyway, the reason this bike is still in my garage is it taught me how to tune bike's geometry and suspension and nothing beats this machine in the market in the same price point.

I just purchased a 2020. what i noticed most in the video is that your just riding it and thats kinda all want to do on it. I think your review is geared towards folks that want to take it past that level of just touring and enter the performance side. I can agree that the short wheel base, torquey motor and sub par suspension will make this a challenge. I appreciate your channel tremendously and its just your opinion. I think is a fun bike and fun is all that matters.

I own a gen 1 MT09 and it really puts a smile on my face but it’s on/off throttle makes anything other than going in a straight line awkward. One thing I haven’t really heard anyone say about this bike is that its instant torque make acceleration appear really fast (and it is), but riding my ZX6r hard highlights that the MT isn’t actually a high horse power bike. I think most people get blinded by that as the MT’s engine can be ridden hard so easily (torque) but the ZX is brutal when ridden how it needs to be - with high revs. I think this is where I disagree with Yammy with him saying the MT is too much for the street. That and it’s price is why it’s done so well

Of course, you are welcome to your opinion, but the MT-09 just ticked all of the boxes for the bike I wanted. I was trying to talk myself into getting a KTM 890, Streetfighter V2, or a Street Triple. Performance wise they are great, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy one with all of the quality control issues. It leads me to think they don't know what they're doing or how to build a quality bike. I've owned Yamahas before, and they've earned my trust. One month in, the seals are still tight, bolts are all there, fluids remaining in their resevoirs, and it's a joy to ride.

Serious question: How do I know if I should get a bike that I like, IF the manufacturers don't allow any test drives with motorcycles? (due to insurances not covering them in general) How do I decide if it's a good bike, or if I really want it and it would be a good choice? Other than sitting on it, getting a feel of the seating position, controls, if you don't ride it and check the engine and all stuff, how do you decide? Now, I'm talking about getting one for your main long-life bike. I got one now, low cc and power just for my first bike to get comfortable on this experience, but I find it difficult to decide on a new one (eventually) as a long-duration bike purchase. Do I try and find a friend or something that have them? Not ideal at all

I have owned a 2015 since I bought it brand new and I agree with most everything you said. Although I disagree when you said you didn't necessarily see the need for the amount of power and torque and you were happy with your 75 hp or so. Who the hell wouldn't want more torque and hp!? It is a very fun bike that suit my budget at the time but it is not at all comfy for long rides so i've been looking to upgrade to something just as fun and sexy but more comfy and "less cheap" feeling.
