I just stumbled across your video. Glad you posted it for all to see. I’ve been riding for about 50yrs. I’ve crashed dirt bikes, and close to crashing rode bikes a few times. Point is, EVERYONE crashes eventually. So, dress for the crash !! I wear a full face helmet(I like my face). It has eye protection and a sun visor too. Also, every ride I put on my leather jacket and gloves/boots. I would rather ride in a tee shirt and tennis shoes and no helmet, but I’d rather crash with all the gear on. Anyway, glad you weren’t hurt worse and I hope you got back on the bike. Nothing like riding down the road on two wheels! Dave

Thank you for sharing your story for others to learn from. I've put myself into a similar situation before; Coming up to a bend in the road a rider in front of me briefly locked his rear tire and I saw (what I thought was) gravel on the road. It got into my head that I couldn't lean the bike over or else I would low side in the turn, so I froze up and went straight to the shoulder of the road wrecking in the dirt. I was mostly fine afterward, but what really gets me is in that split second I thought for sure there was gravel all over the road, yet when I looked back after the wreck I found it was simply black splatter spots from a recent re-paving. The rider in front of me didnt lose control at all; he simply hit his rear brake too hard. The whole thing was purely in my head and I just rode straight off the road. I've now learned to just counter-steer more even when my brain is yelling at me not to.

So glad that you’re ok and still riding. Kudos for putting this video out. This is why practice and training are so important. I would find a big open parking lot to practice those long sweeping turns. That way, you’re confident when you have to steer/lean your bike hard again. I’m not trying to sound negative towards you. We have all been there. I’m just offering advice that I know will make you a confident rider once again. Ride safe and tell Mike I said hi.

I was at a stop sign behind another vehicle. This town is real small has one stop light. Well the car up front all of a sudden started backing up. I was like oh he is giving the log truck room. But he didn’t stop. He backed into me bike. The fender crushed into tire. And the bent the rim. All of us that ride just never know. We all can have a accident and look back at it and wonder what the hey. Glad you okay. And I’m really glad you got back on. And don’t worry bout crazy comments. David (whissperinwind)

Ever hear that old saying there are two types of riders, ones who have crashed and those who haven’t yet. I use to think that would never happen to me. But a few months ago i went down on my 840 pound Triumph motorcycle, it was dark I was having back spasms from being on the bike after a long day and a 5 hour ride home. No injuries really other than a slight concussion and a little road rash, the bike on the other hand has been in the shop well over a month, waiting for parts from England. It happened in seconds, I realized just a little to late that it was not a turning lane but a raised island. Ruined a set of chaps, and a helmet cause $1,300 in damages and still waiting for parts. Glad you walked away.

Many years ago I was a corpsman with the Marines. I was seeing people badly injured that did not know it. I have seen people with multiple fractures, and traumatic kinetic wounds. Most people due to the adrenaline dump will claim they are fine. Mike was wise to keep you laying still and bandaged you up the best he could I think one of the important things one can glean from your accident. It is not always the why the accident happened , but what to do afterwards. A person could have a fractured neck and they claim they feel fine. So you move them and they are paralyzed In my vehicles I always carry a trauma kit. I have come across one motorcyclist that was badly injured that did not make it and I came across another fellow that was working with a chainsaw and a kicked back and almost severed his arm. I was there at the right time and I had the right tools. I put a tourniquet on his arm flagged down a car as there was no cell service. I took care of him until the paramedics got there. Not only did he live but they were able to fix his arm fairly well So I would encourage people after watching the video to ask themselves if they carry a first aid kit including a tourniquet with them and if they know how to use the first aid tools. I can think of nothing worse then seeing a friend or a loved one bleed out while you watched because you did not have a tourniquet or basic first aid knowledge

Yep been there before took out my Electra glide classic out for ride an started to do a long turn an was trying to handlebar turn left an realized i was straightening up starting to go right. Clutch in gave little back break an pushed forward on left handle an back into turn total brain fuck could have ended in ditch but didnt panic an now i always push forward in long turns. Always counter stear above 20 mph now i practice when able.

First and foremost, I'm glad you're okay and I give you a lot of credit for posting this video. My major criticism is simple, you weren't ready for the turn/corner. Although you were having issues with your glasses, you allowed yourself to be further distracted by focusing on waving back to the oncoming riders. Your eyes / head weren't looking where they were suppose to be and became fixated. It doesn't take much as you found out. DO NOT wave before or during a turn/corner or in heavy traffic. In fact, unless you're on a deserted island and you haven't seen a human being in months... I'd skip waving all together. Again, I'm glad you're okay and the silver lining... THIS will make you a better rider. Ride safe everybody.

2 weeks ago my crash was so similar except I remember nothing. My wife was was on her bike behind me and said I never hit the brakes, stayed straight and flipped over the handlebars landing in about 8 inches of mud. I remember her screaming my name over and over and some guy saying don't move don't move...bump bump rattle, helicopter, hospital. Still no clue but my 2021 Ultra stayed upright but was in mud and water to the top of the saddlebags. Should know this week if is totaled. Moral f the story? I didn't die.

"IF" that Chevron sign wasn't right there, this could have turned out very differently. Straighten-up & deciding to go in the Ditch can often times be a good decision. Better to crash not in the roadway but on the grass, weeds, mud, dirt, water, small tree's etc. I wish the sign wasn't right in front of you. Then maybe you could have just rode into the ditch with no braking and just hang on for dear-life to the bumpy ride. Seems like that was your split-second plan, before the sign showed up. Newer signs are now being made out of plastic with a hinge at the bottom & spring in my Country, meaning when you hit them, they bend down, then afterwards spring back-up. Perhaps all signs & poles will be like this is the future. - Angel
