While 300m is below what an average sniper will train, it still is a respectable distance. It is well beyond what the average infantry men train for. I think people lost touch with reality due to Hollywood movies. A sniper is a post in a regular platoon which is armed with a rifle that can take precise shots at longer ranges then an AK or M16. This does not necessarily mean that that person should or could attempt to take shots at 1 km. All this is after we take into consideration the compressed urban space where this sniper in particular is supposed to operate. Keep in mind that Hamas or IJ is not training for large scale combat operations.

That hasn't changed since I retired in 1999 and has been that way at least since I joined in 1979. You can't get promoted or graduate Basic Training if you don't meet this minimum standard. US Snipers are required to qualify out to 1600m, at a minimum. While I agree that urban operations "compress" the distances, a good sniper team will find over watch positions that would allow fields of fire out to 1000m or more in an urban environment. You should check your facts before posting what you think is the truth and who has really "lost touch with reality". Read Training Circular TC 3-20.40 to get a complete understanding of what the real training requirements are before you start spouting bizarre "facts".

Does the machine guy in the squad need to qualify for that? Target practice differs from doctrine to doctrine. What weapon did you use when you shot at 300m? The guy is talking about the Dragunov. That is a dedicated marksman weapon not a proper sniper one. A dedicated marksman is supposed to operate with his squad/platoon, he is not a proper sniper.
