Correct, next time we will do a "pre-pour" fill it half, open the mold, melt the lead again in the preheated mold. Problem solved.

you guys should really be wearing masks... lead fumes are really bad! But great idea on pre-heating the mold first to avoid thermal shock!

What if I simply make a steel "profile bulb" (easier and cheaper), will it have so much hydrodynamic difference for a weekender ? (not racing)

The weight per volume of lead is much more in comparison with the same volume of steel. That is the reason to use lead. If you would make the bulb out of steel you would need 1.4 times more volume. The shape is also of big importance. This shape is equivalent of the drag of a round ball the size of a pingpong bal.

Just Portland cement mix, no extra sand. Just stuff that can stand the heat (You don't need big stones in it like in concrete)

Event dry cement has a humidity factor. You have failed to prepare therefore the steam induced a crap finish. Sand casting would be better
