Tomas Ohlsson shows all the twelve forms of the Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei Seitei Iai kata. The film starts with a sequence mostly for fun of short closeup clips. Then the twelve forms follow. I recorded the video in 2005. I'm sorry about the low resolution.

Outstanding, noto is like gentle waves coming a shore and gently rolling back out to sea. Getting your O-chiburi to sing appears effortless for you. You display great control, slow bits are slow and the fast bits are fast. Thanks for sharing your talents!

those groves down the side are what's amplifying the noise. The groves serve no functional purpose, but during practice they give an audible cue to let you know if your swing was good or not. A good swing will produce a clean whistling sound, like in the video. A bad swing will make an ugly "wuf" noise, or no sound at all. Regular swords without the groove still make the sound, but with the groves it's much clearer if you screwed up, which is why you see many practice swords with them

A very good display. Although I must confess that I found the mini closeups were rather dizzying. One oddity though, his noto impressed upon me the feeling of him being rushed or slightly distracted, but thank you for filming and posting this video. Cheers.

Very nice job. Very much appreciate the refresher (after 8 min, twice a week, every week for 16 years). Nice to know what you learn correctly the first time pays in the long run. Yes, on the "could be more fluid," and yes, I have no doubt in time he'll get there.

Stefan Stenudd sensei is also a high ranking Aikido practitioner in his own right. Katas differs from Ryu to Ryu or Kan to Kan. Let's take for example Tenshin Katori Shinto Ryu to Eishin or Musoken as to Araki Munjisai. There's a lot of differences like in the way they do the chiburi or the noto. In the end it's IAIDO.

SN: Those "grooves" actually do serve a purpose. They prevent the blade from becoming stuck within an opponents fresh stab wound by the suction produced from the involuntary reaction of muscles as they close around the blade and create a suction upon the blade. The grooves or "HI" as they are called prevent this from happening. Some blades have two "HI", most have one. You are correct in that the sound you hear during the cut is produced by the "HI" as the blade travels the arc of the cut.

"kakujiin wa hombum wo tsusuka neba narrimassin! Iss-hogai!" "Ai Uchi! "Go Rin No Sho" written by, Miyamoto Musashi, "The Sword Saint" born 1583,in Kyushu, Japan. At the age of 21 he traveled north to Kyoto where he fought his first battle, decimating a family which had, years before, been responsible for his fathers death. Myamoto developed his own unique "style of swordsmanship utilizing "daisho" or two blades and later in his life formed his own school, The Niten ryu or Two Heavens ryu.

When quickly sheathing the blade, it is possible -because of the natural movement of the thumb in a traditional grip, and the design of the upward-facing blade- for the thumb to get cut. turning it sideways is a slight precaution. It also affords a greater number of drawing options should the swordsman need to draw it again before he has fully re-sheathed.

I advise you to check your source again. That style performed today is mostly restored by martial artists with Kendo backgrounds. They have no idea what the original form would have looked like. In addition, what good is iaido if Koreans weren't allowed to wear swords in their sashes like Japanese?

@SLOANY94 anpogiri focus should be at front after 1st cut 8 is good no problems 9 first is a block not a strike, if it was a strike you wouldnt carry on the kata 10 too rushed 11 first 3 cuts were shocking, need to see a clear difference I know this is harsh but iaido is all about perfecting the katas

Because asian mentality is cyclical in nature (rather than linear of westerners), so martial arts Katas are about returning to original spot in which he or she started. Even beginning courses of any asian martial art teach that. In my experience, that is.

I'm afraid your mistaken, a bohi is created to make the blade lighter, not to prevent suction on a stabbed opponent, that is an urban legend, the western culture is plagued with Japanese sword urban legends.

First I never suggested anyone can cut, quite the contrary, and I never evoke ego in my criticisms. Second a tragedy in the 60s led to Iaido being suborn to the Kendo Federation which has perverted many kata to Kendo praxis which is naive at best. Thirdly the techniques shown here are not good examples of Ashi, Giri, Nuki, or Chiburi and only modest noto. It would be too lengthy to critique bunki here but, generally the following are apt considerations. Giri should blend with the latter phase of Ashi. Cuts involving Ato-Ashi should evolve from Waki-gumai to Haso not randomly from behind. Kirioroshi should never be done with a Kissaki pointing downward. Your Uken never reached Heaven and your block was not with the mune angled.

Ok decent, but does not deserve medals, firstly all kiritsuki cuts way too low for seitei. On ska-ate (4) ski too low meant to pierce solar plexus, also didnt draw out blade after so you hit the 2nd guy with the first as hes on the end. Kesa-giri, apart from first cut is too rushed, sword placement should be perpendicular to ground on guard stance.
