My poor boi sea dragon didn't deserve to be that low on the list, considering that the entire events of subnautica started with stealing a sea dragon egg and the mother just wanting to get her egg back, but accidentally causing the outbreak of kharaa, which in turn caused the construction of the quarantine enforcement platform, but an interesting list to say the least!

There is nothing like the first reaper leviathan ecounter! Even after beating the game like 5 times i'am still scared to go to the dunes/crash zone

If the crystal caves area wasnt so cramped and was darker, with only light source being mainly the crystals reflections and the shadow leviathans spots, with some smaller fish to help disguise it, i could see the shadow leviathan being much higher. I can imagine suddenly seeing the bright blue mouth out of nowhere and freaking out once you realize that's just the mouth. Hopefully subnautica 2 fixes a lot of the drawbacks of below zero.

one thing I do appreciate about the ice worm is that it hunts, something that most other leviathans don't really do. Imagine if the first time you saw the sea dragon it was dragging a Reaper away. makes it feel more like a real ecosystem to me when stuff does its own thing, like what you said about the sea treader.

Fun fact: below zero was originally supported to feature the baby sea emperors from the first game all grown up as a kind of random encounter. For what I know, they didn't do too much, but you could find then occasionally swimming around, and I think there was supposed to be warpers too

The introduction is such an important part for leviathans and the reapers introduction to a lot of people is just perfect. Growling in the distance. Shadowy figure in the murky water. Trying to get to the arora and suddenly being grabbed turned around to see that face ripping apart your seamoth or just swallowing you whole.

Fun fact: the dead leviathan had blunt damage to her head because she tried to get her egg back from the aliens. That’s truly sad.

I personally really enjoy the shadow, ghost, chelicerate, and the sea dragon. The sea treader is also quite cool. For me, the top spot is a toss up between the shadow, cheli, reaper, and the ghost. I do like the more realistic leviathans, the ones that feel like they could really exist on an alien planet. Subnautica combines my passion for astronomy with my love for zoology and it is amazing.

Ghost Leviathans are the scariest I think because of where you find them. Going really far under water further then you should and it getting really dark then hearing one of thoes things then it coming at you out of nowhere is terrifying, and the big ones are even worse.

Aletho be like: Aquatic Bowser type thing? Meh. Oarfish with mandibles? Love it!

I've always been curious about this: Who draws the stuff we see in Aletho's videos? Does he draw them himself? Get them commissioned? Whoever does it, props to them.

Moondial- A device that allows you to see how long until day. Aurora Missile- A device that kills and dissolves the Aurora Leviathan. New Vehicles Aqua Fox- Allows you to dive up to 20 meters underwater and drive over the water. Extremely slow on land. Sea Explorer- Allows you to discover new depths. If you use this to go too close to a dangerous area, you will get an alert. Has a flotation device that can be used in case of emergency to be shot to the surface. Sea Bird- The beta version of the Seamoth that can fly up to 300 meters in the air. New Leviathans- Aurora Leviathan. A massive leviathan the size of the Aurora that sits in the shallow ocean, never moving. Get too close to its jaws, and it will accidentally make you its lunch. You can climb inside through its gills to see whats inside. Mesmerer Leviathan- Like a Mesmer, but takes the appearance of a massive version of different friendly creatures. The PDA will show it as a strange signal when your base begins to be built. Extremely fast. You might need the flotation device of the Sea Explorer to get away. New Creatures- Echo Fish- Repeats sounds of leviathans through the deep. Somewhat rare. Lumen- A glowing fish that is edible. Found deep in the ocean, as a quick snack. Can’t be cooked. Sea Hare- Based on the Sea Bunnies. Can be used as pets, but can be killed to get a new material called Sea Goop… New Areas- Forgotten Base. An eroded base that has drifted very far away. Uses your data from Subnautica (if there is any) to make it. Can be repaired. If no data, there will be the Bart Toragal base. Polluted Waters- The underwater trash dump used by Alterra. You’ll need a special diving suit to venture here due to the pollution. 0 meters to 120 deep. The Meadow- Filled with airtight coral. Can be used to make bases, if equipped with the correct materials. Most fish are docile, but live in hiding due to a nearby leviathan…

i kind of agree with the sea dragon, but only because they are so unthreatening i have never been damaged by one so it just feels like it has more bark than bite

I thought the ventgarden and sea treader would be higher as the sea treader is EXTREAMELY helpful and (from my knowledge) the ventgarden is necessary to beat below zero as its the only source of spiral plants for synthetic fibers for depth modules.

Totaly unbiased because of my pet bagel, no no. But in my book the Shadow Leviathan is one of the absolute coolest, maybe even my most Favorite from base Subnautica/Below Zero! Its just such a cool design. Also fun fact, in german the leviathan is called Thanatos! Which is the name of a god of death. Pretty cool!

Chelicerate is the comeback king! Glad you came around on the Chelicerate it and the Void variant are my favourite Leviathan.

Wbile playing, every friendly leviathan is "interesting," and every other aggressive leviathan is "annoying," but the Reaper continues to be scary to this day. It absolutely deserved the #1 spot

I gave up my playthrough because of the Reaper... It grabbed my Prawn Suit and ended up clipping me into the ground. I kept sinking until I reached an out-of-bounds box in the lava zone, and had to just sit and watch as my Prawn Suit got crushed and destroyed from the pressure, leaving me stuck and forced to reload my last save. I just sorta stopped playing after that.

my first reaper experience was when my bf told me there were cyclops parts behind the aurora. It came barelling out of the murk and i screamed at the top of my lungs, abandoned my seamoth, and seaglided my entire way back to my base without turning around even once

5:15 I remember seeing those for the first time. I was a kid, and i just watched that “Gorefield” thing, and when i saw those, my heart skipped a beat due to the cat like ears, weird posture and three pegs for legs

My list would have been almost exactly the same, I just would have swapped the first two and second place. Loved the other-worldliness of the Ghost. Scared the shit out of me the first time I ran into it. I got to where I just played with the Reapers when I zoomed through their territory. Their scream is usually enough to let me dodge them no problem, but I've had Ghosts sneak up without making a sound. At the end of the day, they're both awesome.

Design wise, the Ice Worm is the coolest creature in below zero, basically the “poster leviathan” for that game. But gameplay wise they ruined it. I heard in beta it was actually really fun to be chased down by it. Now it just barely touches you and throws you off your snow fox..

I agree that the shadow leviathan should have been used more but to me, exploring those areas were by far the scariest moments of below zero

I've really only played Subnautica on creative, the first time being when I was pretty little. The Reaper was ALWAYS my favorite, just because it was. The first one I saw was behind the Aurora. I named him Gary :)

I think if there was an animation showing a sea dragon dragging a reaper down to the lava zone that would have made them seem way cooler.

My most favourite leviathan by far is Shadow Leviathan. Yes, it is an endgame leviathan, but i built a base in Crystal Caves where he swims. It has, as you said, a great design, good sound and a horrifying appearance, that's why he became my favourite.

For bellow zero i found the squid shark in the area bellow the ravine were you find allant the scariest mob in the game because you cannot get your seatruck here and the area make you feel like you are being hunted with the tentacle plant that scare you to death line when i played bellow zero for the first time it was the area that i found the scariest of the game

(In my opinion) The Squidshark should always been 1# or atleast been on the list but instead the reefback is there :( I sacraficed hours of my live to chill with the Squidsharks, My last action in Subnautica Below Zero was to sacrafice my penguin Dave to a Squidshark. I loved Dave but i loved Squidshark more😔 I even kidnapped the Squidshark's children. I love the Reaper Leviathan so much that I made a base very near one of them. It's always fun when I need to build or plant something outside of my base. I also lost several Seamoths because I parked them too close to my base 😂

My personal favorite will always be Ghost Levy. And IMO it is the scariest. And looks very cool. I mean, Reaper literally screams all the time so mostly you can easily hear it and just avoid it. Ghost levy is stealthy. You just hear a strange shriek thinking nothing of it and staying calm, and THEN you see it... or just take a massive hit. They're also very well-mannered, never grabbing your seamoth or prawn. Actually, they do not want to eat you, they're just protecting their territory! And that creepy feeling when you, for some reason, swim right into the void without noticing. When you suddenly notice that there is nothing but darkness surrounding you, no music is playing, it is absolute silence around you... And then you realize... Hopefully before you see or hear THEM. P.S. Also, my first encounter with Ghost is unforgettable. I met my first reaper that ate my seamoth, so I, absolutely terrified, swam with my glider like a psycho. Only when I found myself in a beautiful blue biome surrounded by beautiful glowing orbs I finally felt a relief. Only to find out that even beautiful places contain something insanely dangerous...

I really remember memory when I first got Subnautica below zero I was in creative mode in my truck In the void me and my friend were playing and I remember hearing annoys behind me, and I turned around and all I saw was a giant leviathan zooming towards me and me, and my friend screamed at the top of our lungs. Those were the days.

Sea dragons are terrifying when they spot you and just kind of sneak up on you before absolutely wrecking your day.

My friend told me to play subnautica (they were trying to troll me cuz i have thalassophobia) they said it's a sea exploration game with nothing scary (new fear unlocked: trusting my friend) i heard the reaper leviathan sound and then it jumpscared me (turned off my pc instantly)

I have over 250 hours of Subnautica and yet have never been to the dunes for two reasons: 1. I never figured out where it is 2. I’m scared

Ventgarden deserves a higher spot than reefback from a gameplay perspective as they are quite majestic and give the alien feel + they are more usefull as they contain spiral plants in them which are pretty hard to obtain normally.

Rating the chelly higher than the shadow leviathan was probably the most unexpected take here.

I was somehow able to use my cyclops as a battering ram against 15 or so individual reapers, sometimes 2 at once. Didn't finish them off, though, as much as I'd have liked to. I let it swim at me full speed while I charged in flank speed, and unless it actually tried to hit me, I didn't get the attack warning

The first time i encounter the reaper, I had mo seamoth or seaglide (i was to curious to see the aurora).I got inside of the aurora without any problems, i explored it, like a happy kid who just received a candy, and then i was going to my base when suddenly, i heard a roar, and he just grabs me and eats me like I'm a skittle. Needless to say, I didn't go to aurora for days and started being more careful 😭😭😂😂

My criteria for favourite leviathan can best be summed up as "Will it give me a heart attack?" The less they do the further up they go. For that reason the Vent Garden takes my # 1 spot for it being so benign, and I do like watching the juveniles floating around.

The reaper will always be my favorite thing in subnautica, he is the face of the game, nothing will ever surpass the fear and stress of my First encounter with the reaper

The Squidshark not being on the list shows how little impact it has as a leviathan.

The reaper is always gonna be my second but the ghost I think looks the best of all having transparent and bioluminescent flesh and seeing its insides and the way there’s and juvenile and then the even more colossal adult the ghost leviathan is so cool especially is the void being dark blue it’s just so cool to see especially for a first definitely my favourite leviathan and creature in general in the game.The reaper is really cool and when watching reactions shitting themselves is priceless😂same with the ghost but the reaper more way more.

As a couple of other comments have mentioned, Squidsharks are also leviathans.

The sea treader will try to hurt you if you try to hurt there kids and one reason why I like this leviathan is because the noise it makes

I almost completely agree with this tierlist, although I’d switch the ghost leviathan and sea dragon leviathan. Ghost leviathans just seem like reapers that try too hard, while sea dragon leviathans have always been fascinating to me. Just my personal opinion though.

The endless problem with Below Zero is that it just felt too earthy and the arctic spires biome makes your head spin too many time because it is a NIGHTMARE to navigate - worse than facing two Reaper Leviathans because there is an ICE WORM on you at all times. Not a fun biome.

The reaper ghost are the goats and that will never change

The reaper is 100% number 1 as for many people , me included, it is still the only leviathan that still scares you to a degree. If you hear it scream you immediately stop to see where it is so you can avoid it. I don't do that with any other leviathan, just the reaper. Probably also because it just grabs you if you aren't in a cyclops that certainly helps. I also outright avoid taking the cyclops into reaper infested waters as I personally have trouble getting rid of a reaper in a cyclops once it notices me but that might just be a skill issue. (And yes I do know how to technically get rid of it by turning the engine and lights off so it won't attack any longer but everytime I do it just lingers around close enough to when I turn my engine back on it immediately notices again even if it is in silent running)

From a gameplay and fear perspective, I do really like the dragons, but tbh I always found them to be ridiculously goofy looking with how they have to paddle their arms through the water the way they do. Reminds me too much of a human swimming rather than an aquatic creature

all fun and jokes when you realize that if crystal wasnt there shadow leviathan was the most dangerous leviathan of all the time (for those who dont know he is the only leviathan that dont care of other creature and attack as soon as you are in his range, and his attack time recharge is also very fast, not enoght to make him returning into his path and going away from you) *just my opinion, if you think there are others more dangerous dont argue :))

I think the shadow leviathan would have made a better void leviathan. Maybe make it so it exclusively shoots up from deep under water to attack you or something. Because shadow is the scariest and ghost is second scariest it makes sense to use those as the edge of map deterrents.

The ice worm and sea dragon i agree with so much. The worm is a condensed example of why people just dont enjoy velow zero, and the dragon is just so... goofy looking. He has hands and a silly grin. he spits fire. hes like. water bowser. not a scary beast

For me, the biggest con for the Sea Dragon is the arms - they really remove the "alien-ness" of it. That's the general complain I have about most of the Below Zero creatures: many of them come off as "Oh, this is like " and you can tell at a glance which ones are dangerous. I felt much more of a "WTF is that?!" experience with the original game's creatures.

I find the reapers cool and terrifying. They are so over used though. The ones around the aurora, island, and mushroom forest work but then you go to one particular area and the are everywhere. Would have preferred they cut back on a handful of reapers and added either another type of leviathan or just had a few less reapers.

Shadow Leviathan is held back by its habitat. in my opinion, the Crystal Caves are too bright, and if the Shadow Leviathan blended in with darkness it would increase in scariness drastically
