Here I am again listening to the Killer. I remember him saying: "I am the greatest rock n' roll, blues and country singer in the world". At the time I thought he was being an arrogant SOB. But years later..I can see that he was just plain right. He is the best. :)

Yep!! Me too, in my younger years I was a 'Purist' (AKA SNOB) regarding my music. It wasn't until many years later that I listened to him properly, and realised his musical Gift. He was a singer/ interpreter without peer for his type of music. He is up there now among my top dozen or so favourites. Vale! JLL

Jerry Lee Lewis could play anything several different ways. Elvis, Elton, The Rolling stones and the Beatles were in awe of him. He sang with true emotion and believed what he sang. He wasn't the first inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for nothing. There is only one Jerry Lee Lewis.

++pianoglider R He should have the same honour in the Country field but that was denied him, and he's now past meeting the criteria although in his day he certainly topped them easily. However, being the wild man he was, and probably still in bad odour because of his marriage to his young cousin, he was never awarded it - one of the greatest of all Country singers who also had a stack of hits. For me the very greatest Country singer bar none.
@Bozwell42

@@gynack Agreed Trevor, he was truly "One of a Kind" and never will be, never could be, another like him. I have a memory of a clip from one of his live performances where he replied to an inaudible comment from the audience; "You never know Darlin, I Just might". Sums his persona up perfectly.

it's really really difficult to sing a song differently each time you play it, even if only because of how often you'll just fall back on the way you know works. i've never heard him sing a song the same way twice, with all the same phrasing. it's really amazing.

Yeah, I read it on here all the time, everyone was better than Elvis. The fact that it is always Elvis they have to compare their favourites against says it all. As for the comment as to Elvis being a product of the South … the remarkable thing about Elvis is that a lot of his music is entirely without implication of time and place (think all the European ballads and much more besides). You can actually place Jerry Lee very easily in his context. The truth is that all comparisons are invidious. I’ve been lucky enough to see Jerry Lee and he was magnificent. Anyone who is really into the music just appreciates what each great artist brings to the table and leaves comparatives in the playground - everyone’s dad is always bigger than everyone else’s dad.
