About our guest:
Rima Kallingal is an Indian actor, contemporary dancer and film producer who mainly appears in Malayalam films.
She was a semi-finalist of the Asianet reality show Vodafone Thakadhimi. She moved to Bengaluru to pursue a modelling career and later participated in the Miss Kerala beauty pageant, in which be she became the first runner-up. She made her Malayalam film debut with Ritu (2009). She was spotted by director Lal Jose on a magazine cover, who cast her for a goat herder role in a Tamil film Mazhai Varappoguthu. The project didn't materialize, but she was offered the lead female character of Varsha by director Shyamaprasad for Ritu, which eventually marked her acting debut.
She was much appreciated for her performance in the movie 22 Female Kottayam. She won the Kerala State Government award for Best Actress for the film. She has acted in several films after that like Indian Rupee, Rani Padmini and Santhoshathinte Onnam Rahasyam. Her latest movie is Neelavelicham where she essays the character of Bhargavi. This movie is a remake of the 1964 movie Bhargavinilayam which was scripted by Vaikom Mohammad Basheer. The movie was based on the short story penned by Basheer himself. Rima stars in the movie opposite Tovino Thomas and Roshan Mathew. As of now the teasers song are out and the movie Neelavelicham releases later this month.
In this four-part series that delves into various aspects of her personal and professional journey, Rima explains how misses being busy with her craft as an actor. How life has changed for her over the years. She talks about how post marriage to the director Aashiq Abu, Rimas's career nosedived as married actresses were not being considered. She talks about her TEDx talk as how the anecdote about the fish fry was blown out of proportion and misinterpreted. She says that it hurt her family and she has now chosen to speak about it. She talks about her struggle with mental health during covid and how dancing helped her get back. All the controversy that she has death with especially the skirt controversy she talks about that as well/ She talks about feminism and why is it relevant. This is a wonderful conversation that tells us the story of a woman who chose to raise her voice for others.

My daughter is a feminist, a teenager! I too regard much respect to feminism. But I’m a working mother doing all kitchen chores with zero help from my daughter. And I ask her is this the right feminism! She’s making her mother to do all the work & she sits and share feminism posts in insta! When I tell her , If you have to be independent in life study the house chores alone with academics. If you say swiggy, house maid, that’s not how you win the argument. In todays world you should be conscious about what you eat, hotel food will defenitely make you sick! Be independent both financially & individually. If you do some cooking that won’t make you less feminist. I tell my boy & girl equally to be independent, to study the house chores!

chechi whatever u said is right, but next time do one thing ask ur son to share the household duties, and make him do tht, so ur feminist daughter will see this and might understand. I think some feminists specially girls get irritated when thy see their moms asking girl child to do the household works without asking same to their sons, even i had these same feminist thoughts and i never helped my working mother in kitchen, and when my dad says this dialogue “ 2 penpiller ulla veedaanu enn parayuo ith onnu adichu vaari ittode? “ So the rebel in me asks my dad that why dad do girls have extra something ? Why can’t papa or brother help my amma in kitchen and other works, i was super lazy like my brother, now i got married and i dont even know to cook, even if i see youtube and cook also it will be an utter flop, and my husband cook’s really well, his mom had taught both her son n daughter equally everything, literally everything, so now I’m learning many things from them

Years back, i spoke to a psychiatrist friend of mine about the regret that I had regarding my mom's sacrifice. I was feeling really low thinking that I'm a selfish daughter. Then she said something which I remember every day. " A mother's love for her child is selfless. You cannot pay it back. But you can pass it on."

Rima resonates with each and every woman around us, around me. My heart still feels heavy by listening her talk this beautifully. I could relate this with my own thoughts and feelings(especially about mom being happy). I have asked my mom once this same question that is she really happy. I had to take (still taking) several sessions of therapy so that I don’t blame myself for seeing her sacrifice her life for everyone else. More love to you❤

I have always had this negative association with kitchen and the worst fear of my life Is having to cook 3 meals a day for 365 days. As you both said the it travels back to my mother who I have seen always in the kitchen, doing everything by herself and not able to take a leave for a single day. Sometimes I feel I am a selfish daughter for not helping her enough and just ran from her. But now I know the freedom that I enjoy today is her tears and sweat. She wanted me not to suffer what she had to. I can never be half as selfless as she is.😔

I echo what Rima mentioned, my grand mother was super bold, not only my grand mother, all other ammummas in that generation. My amma has dedicated whole life for her 3 daughters and still doing it and she wanted 3 of us should graduated, get a job and handle money by ourself and all 3 of us achieved that❤

I think the boomer generation could not develop intellectually much, they were scared to take risks and they just went along with whatever society mandated. Whereas their previous generation, the grandmothers had to struggle, make decisions and really push themselves, so they were better decision makers and had strength.

Hi Ma'am Definitely, as Rima said, this show is a relief for all of us who are listening, and unfortunately, due to certain circumstances or not in the limelight common people like us are not ready to take chances to open up and to share our feelings for others especially to our parents and I feel I also wanted them to be extremely happy and I felt we need to empathise with them or other people who went through traumas in their lifetime. When you said I want to ask my mom whether she is happy with the life she has and definitely, it's a relevant question, and I think at least we should do this once inlife to make them feel proud of us that we even spare sometime to atleast think about it. Not only to our mothers but also to our fathers who took all the responsibility in their shoulders supporting their family sacrificing everything for them by living apart (NRIs) The most relevant thing today is that everyone wants to be heard, and to be protected or an empathetical approach is one of the most important aspects where it directly helps people with hope, happiness, positivity and connection with those who are around us or for those who feel that they are alone in this life and where they didn't felt they belong in this world or they have any place in somebody else's life. Life is always about sacrifice, and we find it meaningful when we were able to wipe out the tears of our dear and near one's with our empathic approach. First of all, we have to make our own parents happy, and that is the only way we can repay our debts of their indebtedness of their unlimited love, care and and innocence throught the life. Thank you DHANYA Ma'am

That fear is so true!! Being trapped in kitchen, for I hv seen my mom like that always..she is a teacher but she never got off from kitchen duty.. Omg!..I will not do that for the sake of my sanity.. but the regret is also true..! N I have asked my mom how she does this, everyday..! She said she doesn't have an option, that's why. When I shared this with my therapist she agreed top notch on how true that is, n we talked about the social construct..how women is expected to be everything..and she gave assurance to my feeling of not wanting such a life by simply saying that its inhumane to live like that, n it's okay to get up late and do minimal things n go on with the day, in a way comfortable for me.. It does feel selfish! Bt I guess we have to figure out a point between guilt and selfishness..n be with our moms..

I completely agree with what Rima said about the transition that happened in the past generation. My grandmother had the full authority in my home on everything but it did not happen for my mamma. She was having a job, and after marriage didn't go to work and remained as a housewife. But from when I was born, until now, she always told me to study and do my work. She always takes of the kitchen and other duties. But all of my relatives are against this and were saying pillara paniedupikunila. 😢 male supremacy was a lot higher in the past generation than in our grandmother's time

Totally resonate with what they're saying. I always feared of getting trapped in the kitchen too like so many other women in our society. I wish my Mom could also relax and sit down to enjoy a movie every night with us rather than having to worry about the kitchen and us. Now, even when she has time, she does not enjoy a movie because she's just not used to it. What an interview ma'am,both of you were creating such a wonderful space.. Were letting out the hardships of many average keralite women trying to find her own existence.. Just through your conversation.. Wish both of you, all the best things in your life. .

Hi dhanya mam as rima and supriya said , in this chaotic world of media, the space you give to them is to be appreciated. You know I really feel happy and peaceful when I watch your videos. The respect and understanding you have towards everyone you have interviewed is huge mam. I don't blame others, but I don't support them as well. And I'm sure you have no intentions to hurt others, not even with a question, I have felt that, Keep going mam❤🤗🤗. May god bless you🤗🤗

Dear Dhanya , Most of the talks in this chanel are so progressive which give a lot for the next generation. Ans it 's beautiful the People in this show are so comfortbale to speak about their mind..They are not just talking but giving a vision of this time. As Rima said, unlearning is the best learning process which someone can do for themselves and society. Congratz Dhanya . Knowingly or unonowingly this chanel is making a relevant chapter of this period . Proud of you .🤝
