Acclaimed pianist Jeremy Denk interviews British tenor Ian Bostridge, whose performances of Winterreise “haunt the imagination long after the notes have died away” (New York Magazine) and whose new book, Schubert’s Winterreise: Anatomy of an Obsession, offers a personal examination of the song cycle’s literary, historical and psychological themes. "He is not only a lyric tenor of uncanny focus and intensity but also an accredited scholar and deft commentator on musical matters,” wrote Alex Ross.

There is something archetypal about the figure of the Hurdy-Gurdy Man. I recognize him as an image first encountered in my childhood. His origin is Eastern Europe. Why do I think he might be Jewish? The Fiddler on The Roof. The Rag Picker. The Outcast The Stranger among us who has looked upon things we all shy away from and so, we shy away from him all the while knowing he has something wise and terrible to teach us. Someone recently said to me that more than being loved, we need to feel that we belong. I thought about that and it feels right ! Family, Religion, Nation, City Class Sexual orientation Local Sports Team College Fraternity Political party These are things we belong to. We support them. We exalt them. We defend them. We oppose those who attack them. We feel elated when another member of our tribe succeeds. What does it feel like when we belong to no group? Who among us does not belong to any group? The beggar. The homeless The elderly living alone. The black man in a white world. The mis-shapen The grotesque. This is the Hurdy Gurdy man.....the Leiermann The one we fear most because he lives our greatest nightmare. But when we are dying we feel the ultimate alone-ness. We are alive but no longer belong to the world of the living. Perhaps Schubert, who was dying when he wrote this, was making common cause with the Leiermann. Outcasts... together. " May I come along? Will you play my song ?"

Deck seems to want to drop every name he has ever come across. Not necessary in examining this beautiful melancholic piece .

Mr. Denk is no show-off. Yes, he did kick a few balls into Mr. Bostridge's territory in an effort to inject some energy into the proceedings. Unfortunately, they didn't travel very far; but, oh, I did enjoy the footwork. It was an elegant performance.

I think Die Krahe (The Crow) is quite funny, in the way it contrasts the light flitting of the crow and our wanderer’s sullen heart. It is as ifnature is trying to show him a way out, to invite him o connect other the world again, and he can only take the worst line of reasoning. You imagine him annoyed by the bird.

It can be so in a narrative sense, but music expresses otherwise- the incessant circling in the left hand and intricate chromaticism portray that there is no way out, no end to the journey.

Reality Check: It's really a backward world. I was a scholarship student at Juilliard for six years. Although I never spoke directly with Mr. Denk, for years he would always stare me down as he smoked cigarettes and gossiped outside the entrance of the school (not BSing here...James was one of the main security guards that everyone knew...big dude). I always thought to myself, "Does this guy ever practice or is he majoring in cigarette smoking with a minor in gossip?" I know people that play circles around this clown but the sheeple are ALWAYS influenced by the squeaky wheel. What has happened to the world?!

If you think Schubert is gloomy, you shouldn't listen to him because you’ll never ever understand him.
