I adore Ian Dury and the Blockheads. My mum had polio (my dad did too, but he recovered fully). My mum lived life from the age of four with a withered leg and arm due to polio, she still gave birth to me and my sister, and at one point she was the biggest employer in Stourbridge. She always held up Ian Dury as a role model for people living with polio, and I love him because he was a great singer! And obviously, he reminds me of my lovely Mum.

@rumbottom According to Wikipedia (it's not the most scientific but still), Ian Dury was born in Harrow and spent some of his childhood in Cornwall. He moved to Essex at the age of 7 after a short sorjourn in Switzerland. Don't think that makes him Cornish. His heart and soul was of an Essex lad.

I can remember my parents taking me & my brother to see Ian Dury & The Blockheads play live at Crystal Palace park U.K as little kids we must have only been 5 & 4 years old they couldn’t get a babysitter that night so took us with them ! The crowd having a great time laughing at seeing these two little kids me & my bro sat high on our parents shoulders going crazy at this song ! Still a favourite song of ours to this day now in our late 40’s - great memory to have 😊

Probably one of the most underated artists of our time. Plus, the difficultes that he had with polio. Well, what a fabulous artist and despite what he had to face, day to day, he did this with great humility and dignity. That's why he'll always be great. . I use this line to practice with. It really limbers up the fingers. But then when I try to play along with the original, it's actually 25% faster than I was expecting. I can't believe how the bass player is able to keep playing that many notes at that speed for five minutes. And I see live versions where he plays faster and for longer while they stretch out the song. Point being, the more you know about bass, the more you realize how amazing this bass line is.

I don't know how old you are, but 'homework' suggests you weren't alive when this was released. It's actually easier for old farts like me to hear music from back in the day now than it was back in the day. Same for new music and everything in between. As consumers of music, we are blessed. I have a second-hand copy (sadly with the centre pushed out, as the label had a big bubble). Lots of old music has good bass. Peggy Lee’s Fever and Cliff Richard’s Living Doll are great examples, and they came out 20 years before this!

I could listen to the blockheads grooving for twenty straight minutes before even layering the vocals on top. So many instrumental parts so tastefully ducking and weaving around one another leaving room for each other. Fantastic.

I was 10 when this came out and I thought it was fantastic. Recorded it off TOTP onto a tape recorder and told everyone to keep quiet until it was over. 79 was the best year I can remember...the music, summer holidays, playing out with mates til the sun went down. Ah, the good old days.

I am 71 and still remember a show in Maastricht where he fell from a few steps on stage. He's a short guy so a band member put him on his feet, gave him the mike and off he went for two hours. Great show!

the band were great too, good fun to be around, not standoff-ish, very modest. Met him & the band through his brother who was in the Q Tips, another great live band. We shared some notorious water fights in a pub (forgotten the name, I think it was in Luton somewhere?) But it was great, a fantastic era for real live music of so many genres.

As a teenager I was blown away with this song. Years later I recognized and I'm not sure if it is acknowledged by anyone else that there is a Fela Kuti AfroBeat influence there. Specially when the two Saxes come in. The repeated patterns etc. its all there. Still, Ian Dury and The Blockheads were one of a kind.

Ian Dury created his own musical niche. The Blockheads agreed to try out the songs Dury had been working on for years. The musicians loved the songs so much, they jumped in.
