The last best chance at peace between Israel and Palestine included bowling and baseball at a wooded retreat in rural Maryland.

Twenty-three years ago at Camp David, US President Bill Clinton welcomed Palestinian Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak for a two-week summit in a bucolic setting. The goal: find an enduring solution to the Israel-Palestine crisis.
But as Ian Bremmer explains, as the three leaders strolled together down a leafy Camp David road, they couldn’t have been further apart in their expectations for the summit. Ehud Barak, the young, leftist Israeli Prime Minister-fresh off a series of failed negotiations with Syria-had pushed hard for the summit, arguing that it was the “pressure cooker” that would require him and Arafat to make real progress on a two-state solution. His strategy was to either secure a deal or expose Arafat as an unreliable partner.
Meanwhile, Yasser Arafat was treading water of his own. Given his constituency’s mistrust of Israel and his resentment of Barak’s recent focus on Syria, Arafat was in no hurry to reach an agreement. He had warned Clinton ahead of the summit that his side was not ready to come to the table. Nor did he trust Barak to follow through on his promises.
This is the story of what happened at those talks and why the best chance in a generation for peace in the Middle East failed.

Interesting, but it would have been helpful to discuss the specifics of the deal discussed, and areas of disagreement. And totally unrelated to the content, that coat and scarf on you looks good.

Ian, it's my understanding that it wasn't Arafat who balked, but Barak who ended the ongoing negotiations in Taba on 27 January 2001 because of the upcoming Israeli elections. Is that not the case?

That is wrong. According to the Secretary of State at the time, Barak constantly compromised even he doesn’t trust the opponent. PA side constantly changes its goalposts, making everyone extremely frustrated. Sometimes they agree, then flip the next day, asking for more, then budging again.

@@dodo-og2ss What exactly did I say that's wrong? I'm not claiming that Arafat wasn't a terrible negotiating partner or doesn't share most of the blame, I'm simply pointing out that the negotiations kept going until Barak called them off

@@rabidrandy the PA refused all agreements. Including conditions they agreed before during the negotiations. And the summit was over. PA ended the talk.

@@dodo-og2ss Obviously Arafat didn't agree to anything, no one claimed otherwise, but the PLA didn't end the talk, negotiations kept going until January 2001, at which point Barak ended the talks

@@rabidrandy I don’t remember the exact back and forth. But it was like Arafat say ok to a on day 1, then say no on day 2. Yes on day 3. And at the end. Clinton administration literally worked until the last day on this thing. But PA was not expecting to agree on anything. Which is a better deal than what they have today

There will never be a two state solution

Of course there will be. Nobody believed that there's going to be peace between Egypt and Israel nor Jordan. The hardest deal is with the Palastiniens since they have been involved the most with Israel. Israel will need to offer compensations and this time with other arab nations backing the negoitations, not just the US.

It came close to nothing. Arafat and his fellow murderers had no intention to agree on anything - and furthermore, they had no RELIGIOUS authority to concede any "Palestinian" land. If they would they would be removed from power by the Muslims themselves in the same manner Saadat was.
