this is the lunch scene from Jurassic Park in which Jeff Goldblum's character voices his objections to what the parks genetic engineers are doing as well as the parks creator, John Hammond's lack of respect for nature.

Geniuses are often obnoxious, arrogant, and condescending. Isaac Newton made it a goal of his to erase Robert Hooke from history (even burning the only known portrait of him) because Hooke insulted him once. Nikola Tesla was notorious for being cruel, condescending, and horrible with people. Even Einstein believed himself to be above reproach, and became irritated when people like Planck and Bohr disagreed with him. Mozart knew he was the smartest person in the room, and wouldn’t waste his time teaching anyone how to write music. Michelangelo was so vindictive he spent time working insults to the Pope into his artwork in the Sistine Chapel. They’re human beings. They’re not devoid of emotions that the rest of us experience. They are aware of how much they know, and become frustrated when most other people don’t. Understandable, if you ask me.

This scene, Malcolm has a cynical way of describing the "lack of humility", to borrow his terminology. Juan Cardona I think the movie that will kill the remakes will the remake of The Little Mermaid because it's going to be a special effects nightmare. If the underwater scenes are going to be underwater, then all the shots can only last between nine and eleven seconds, and if the underwater scenes are NOT shot underwater, how can you make it look like someone is underwater, when their not? Also, our leading lady is going to have to wear greenscreen pants which will make it hard to look like she's swimming, and make life hell for the animators for the fish tail. I doubt wire work will be effective because that only makes it look like you're jumping very high. And even if they do manage to film and animate the underwater scenes, by the time their finished, they'll probably be out of money and be unable to film the land scenes. Making people look like tall blue elf like aliens on a jungle moon is a work of art that deserves to be preserved and be viewed for all time, but making someone look like a merperson underwater is past the budget and tech limit, and liable to destroy Disney.

That's unfortunate. As more movies and everything else are moving towards style and spectacle over substance, the Required Essay from Alan Becker's Animation vs Animation III still rings true to this day. Today’s society is *too busy to see meaning in art.* Art today is more about *beauty* than provoking thought. To understand a piece of art is to *stop and think,* and nobody has time to do that anymore, because they are *preoccupied with their busy schedules.* On the other hand, beauty can be seen in a picture *right away without thinking.* The primary function of today’s artist is to create beauty; people are more affected now by *first impressions* than by *underlying messages.* The world is a gigantic, thriving organism, bustling with activity. Everywhere you look, there are people in cars talking on cell phones, getting ready for their next event. The only art in their lives are the *ads* in their magazines, in their websites and the commercials on their televisions. Can one pack a provoking message into thirty seconds of television, five seconds of a video ad, or on one page of a magazine? It is possible, but conveying beauty is much easier. All you need for an impacting beer commercial are pretty women holding ice-cold bottles of the liquid. Just take some slow motion shot of cars splashing through water, and you have a high-quality car commercial. Many people are so *lazy* that the *media can only appeal to them through their eyes.* Does anyone think beyond the surface of art? A *dying percentage* does, and those are the professional fine artists and art historians. Art is no longer the channel through which people pour their thoughts. Therefore, if there is a message you want to convey to the population, *writing a book would be a better choice,* as long as censorship doesn't hold you back.

He's not so much giving a lecture in ethics, he's warning of the dangers of playing with something which you may not fully understand but may harbour as yet unseen lethal consequences - like Collateralized Debt Obligations for instance, or the two year boy who toyed with his mother's handgun while she was distracted, accidentally shot and killed her (with tragic irony, she had been a Physics PhD).

One of the brilliant things about this story (either in the novel itself or the film version) is how incredibly sympathetic Hammond is as a character. For a rich, powerful magnate hell-bent on doing something very suspect, he's quite likable. He goes out of his way to bring Malcolm, a man he knows will dislike him, into the inner circle. He specifies he wants the park to allow everyone, not just the rich, to enjoy the dinosaurs. What could have been a greedy one-dimensional cartoon villain is instead a man we can sympathize with even as we disagree with him.

Such gold in the Ian Malcolm discourse & expositions. Pity the movie version of "Jurassic Park" did not fully honor & expand upon it, in this scene or later in the film, when his concerns were being realized on the island. Salute to Michael Crichton, one of the great tech noir American authors. Crichton provided his readers a 30 yr caravanserai and is sorely missed today

Malcolm in my opinion is the best character in the Jurassic park series. He is great in the movies, in the books he is 10x better. His rant in the movie in nothing in comparison to is disgust in science (Some Sciences) and his overall lack of trust in the scientific community and their practices.

A great scene and a great bit of monologue. Since then, we've seen the advent of social media, and the proliferation of a highly-complicated mass-surveillance apparatus used against the citizens of developed nations all over the world. Great examples of amazing technology being invented and implemented by brilliant minds who were more preoccupied with whether they could, rather than whether they should. Both driven by fear and greed of small-minded people, who weren't worried about the morality, or the consequences of what they were involved in.

It's a great analogy for social media, the internet, and the current state of the world in 2022. "They were so preoccupied with the question of whether they could do it, and they never stopped to think if they SHOULD do it". And now we're left to live with the results 😬 "Don't you see the danger inherent in what you're doing here". Wow.

what Michael Crichton was always writing about in his books how westernized modern science and technology has been misused by modern man and the dangers that come with the misuse of that power, Malcolm always been that voice of reason. also, on a sidenote, he wrote a book called. prey that would make an amazing film. The premise is about nano tech swarms getting into the environment. Out in the desert And having to be destroyed before growing out of control, become violent, And they're super smart and mimic people.

When I was in film school I had a really old professor who hated this movie. Absolutely hated it because of what came from it with the CGI glut of films. I defended it by quoting this speech but attributing it to later filmmakers who didn't take the time to really examine how and when to use CGI! He did not like it but I got a few chuckles from the people who got what I was doing!

Yeah, I mean it’s one thing to create a single Dinosaur just to prove you could as a matter of Genetic Research. It’s something else entirely to say “I can make Dinosaurs, let’s make a theme park out of it, what could possibly go wrong?”

This is the best scene in the entire film. It’s scenes like this that separate a good film (Jurassic Park) from hackneyed films (Jurassic World series).

Just saw on the news today about the submersible Titan imploding while en route to the Titanic wreckage and thought of Dr Ian Malcolm’s (Michael Crichton) words here. The idea that hubris and pursuit of taking the next step faster than the last person can cloud the sense of responsibility and respect to the larger implications. Anyone else watch Westworld (movie or series)? Crichton sure liked the clash between technology, human shortcomings, chaos, and theme parks all rolled into one.
