Ian McDonald was a true pioneer of prog rock and modern jazz, for me, this is a MAJOR loss, King Crimson as we know it would not have happened without Ian's gift for arranging songs, this man was a GIANT in musical circles, if you can find the video of Pete Sinfield explaining how " The court of the Crimson king " was first played as almost a folk song, with a faster tempo, Ian figured out how to get the most out of this song and re-arranged the piece to its present day form, that was just one of the game changers that he incorporated into the success that Crimson came to be, one of the problems was that Ian was viewed as a bit of a Diva, he was playing chess when everyone else was playing checkers, he got on well with the Giles brothers and Mel Collins, but not very well with Fripp, he left the band and was still in close communication with most of his band mates, I'm not going to go into his Foreigner days because I feel that he was treated poorly by those people, if you really want to see him at his best try to find the " 21st century schizoid band " concert in Japan in 2002, again, to me losing Ian is akin to losing Greg Lake and John Wetton, he was a true musical visionary, when I read this morning that he had passed, its one of those moments that you will not forget where you were when you first heard about it.....carry on Ian, you will be missed.

Well said, I feel Peter Banks ( Yes) , Nick Simper ( Deep Purple) and Ian all treated in a similar shitty way, Nick Simper wasn’t even invited to RARHOF , and Peter Banks was dead before the acceptance. Ian was shoddily treated by Foreigner and especially Mick Jones in reducing the band to 4 from 6 , the band was never the same IMHO . YoUr mention of The Court of the Crimson King is interesting too a folk song, wow, shows how clever and underrated he was R.I.P Ian .
