"Do You Hear the People Sing?" or À la volonté du peuple (At the people's will) in the original French version, is one of the principal and most recognizable songs from the musical Les Misérables. A stirring anthem, it is sung twice in the stage musical.
The song is first sung in Act I by Enjolras and the other students at the ABC Cafe as they prepare themselves to launch a rebellion in the streets of Paris during the funeral procession of the general, and member of the parliament, Jean Maximilien Lamarque. The song is sung again in the "Finale" as the final song of the musical. This second version, which immediately follows a number by Jean Valjean and others, is sung by the entire cast with revised lyrics, and becomes progressively louder with each stanza.
The song is a revolutionary call for people to overcome persecution and adversity. The "barricades" referenced in the song are erected by the rebel students in the streets of Paris in the musical's second act. They are to draw the National Guard into combat and ignite a civilian uprising meant to overthrow the oppressive government, but their rebellion eventually fails.
The footage used in this video is from the 1978 Les Miserables film.

This song gives me hope. The progress of humanity never ends. We've experienced highs and lows, we've fought for what we thought was right. We will neveracheive that utopia the revolutionaries through the centuries dreamed about but that shouldn't discourage us. We all have a spark of the divine in us, in the same time we're doomed to never fully acheive it. Our purpose, as individuals and as a civilization, is to try to get the closest to it as possible... For example, look at the world from 400 years ago. People had no rights, their lives and opinions weren't even considered and they were manipulated through religion, colonization and slavery were on th rise, women were considered no more than objects, etc. If everyone had said: "it's never gonna change, that's the way things are" it would've stayed the same. So keep fighting for your ideals, people✊⚔️. Keep fighting for a better future, equality, justice, freedom and autonomy. Who knows - maybe some day it'll become reality!

My favorite story from Victor Hugo is Claude Gueux, it's a short story about 50 pages about the responsability of violence between poor and rich people. You can use it as a metaphor. For example, if a slave is violent against his master, who's responsible for that violence ?

Imagine a world were the Us democracy failed in its starts (Idk maybe because the anti federalists succeeded and kept the articles of confederation as the constitution) and the french democracy survived (maybe with the moderates cutting the jacobins before they got to powerful or with dalton and the other jacobin oppositors doing a coup against robespierre) making France the example of republicanism to the world instead of the failed US republican experiment, that would be interesting to see

@@tachy1801 You also forgot that the French in those time had a superior cavalry, infantry and even artillery, far before Napoleon. France was beaten during seven years war because of bad commanders and because Russians, Austrians and French were not coordinating their offensives against Prussians/English/German principalties. And also because France hadn't a true navy, the British were outrageously dominating the seas. Neverthe less, French were able to fit a small but very efficient navy in less than 10 years to permit the american insurgents to win their idnependence. More than french soldiers, it's french navy which permit the good "end" in this war. Rochambeau was also a great commander, far better than Washington which was more a good politician than a good soldier. Then when France which had the lead in the quality of its infantry, cavalry and artillery, when the french people were not anymore fighting by force but by will and when France reveealed great chiefs as Napoleon, Kellerman, Davout, Berthier, Soult, Murat and almost all the french Marshalls and Generals of the revolutionary and napoleonic era, it was evident that it would need a team effort (Prussia, Russia, Austria-Hungary, UK, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, german princes) to beat the French on the continent (with english gold also, they were the political leader of all coalitions, they didn't put much of troops and almost never took a risk excepted at Waterloo, where Prussians saved their asses when the battle was slowly but surely went in the way of French, despite a superiority in number and experienced troops in favour of the british) ... We can also do the parallele with the second world war : a true team effort to beat german nazis, with red army being the true armed hands of the allies, the US/UK supplies, the bodies of all the resistances in Europe... I put willingly apart the WWI which was far more complexe than WWII.
@jpc7118
@jpc7118 4 жыл бұрын
@The_Jaguar_ Knight It was more the succession of war where belligerants changed at each war permitting to at least a big ally to rest a certain time and recover from its losses when France was constantly fighting at her full strength... Allies would have took far more time to beat the French if Napoleon (to beat definitively British system of paying all the coalitions by a true continental blocus, which was not far to show its efficiency) hadn't decide to attack Russia, the alone true war that french began when all other coalitions were war declared by Britiain and its allies. Without Russian campaign, I don't see the coalitions defeating France. Napoleon lost his elite troops in Russian winter, but he inflicted severe defeats to allies despite a true inferiority in numbers and in experienced troops (the Marie-Louise did an incredible job)... The campaign of France in 1814 was a true nightmare fro allies, Napoleon showing a true genius to defeat troops surounding his by 2 or even 3 to 1. sometimes making 2 victories over different allied armies in the same day. Then I disagree to say that french defeat was inevitable. You forgot Diplomacy, and Napoleon wasn't that bad there. he had spoused the Austrian princess, she had given a son to Napoleon, Metternich was palying the double face like Talleyrand during all the napoleonic era. Napoleon only did 2 mistakes : The spanish occupation which obliged him to go there and let many troops which will miss a lot later. Then the lack of knowledge or analysis of the russian spirit and their winter. despite this 2 mistakes, he could have won even. In the end, the allied victory over France was very lucky and a bit surprising.

And the reason of Robespierre’s fall was not only because of the thermidoriens, but also because there was a lot of jacobins who supported Danton too because Danton was considered a hero even more than Robespierre at that time because Danton led the French Revolution... after Danton was accused of corruption, Robespierre tried to protect Danton first but then gave up and accepted with other radicals to sent him to the gu*llotine
@revolutionariesoffreedom2374
@revolutionariesoffreedom2374 3 жыл бұрын
The fall of Robespierre is mostly because the jacobins were split in 2 sides... one supporting Danton and the other supporting Robespierre... When a radical was accusing Danton, Robespierre defended Danton which caused half of the jacobins to defend Danton and which sent that radical to the gu*llotine ...But when Robespierre finally went against Danton, a lot of jacobins defended Danton... Finally after all this dispute both Danton and Robespierre got gu*llotined... but because Robespierre was the one who gu*llotined Danton first, the moderates formed an alliance with the jacobins who supported Danton which was called the thermidorians... And then Robespierre was sent to the gu*llotine because the majority voted for his death...
