Most people try for UPSC as they don't see an alternative especially in Tier 2/3 cities where this message is not reaching as they don't speak English. Definition of success for them is the relative point of reference such as a Govt officer. I am not sure not that would really change in the next decade as UPSC does provide a long shot to success whereas the traditional ladder of getting a low paying job and struggling for years is not very attractive.

Left my job in 2022 due to the work pressure and toxic environment. Everyone told me that Government job is way better both in terms of work environment and work life balance, I felt I should prepare for it. Now it's been 2 years since I have been preparing for SSC cgl. And i still am not able to clear it. I never thought of UPSC since I knew it required a lot more dedication and hardwork than other exams and I was not ready for it. I thought of giving SSC first. Now it feels like things are getting out of hand. I don't want to go back to that private job. Maybe because of that fear of working 13-14 hours for a really low salary. Now I have started to feel as if I can't do any job at all. Sitting at home for two years has made me dull and lazy. Now even my parents who were earlier worried if i will get a government job or not are now worrying whether or not I'll be able to get even a private job. Wasted 2 years and will be giving my last try this year. I am learning skills too cuz that's something I should have started right after leaving my job. These govt. jobs are like a web. Getting out is quite difficult since you always have that hope that this time you'll clear it. There are people who are in way more difficult situation than mine. I hope they all get successful in life.

The issue with IIT JEE , CAT, UPSC, NEET they are exceptionally hard to crack - they produce some of the best minds from the country ( there is no doubt about it ). The argument that these are useless races, is obsolete, because in a country like India, where everyone studies really hard, an easy exam like SAT , taking into account extra-curriculars, dad's business etc which are used by Ivies would be disastrous. Taking your school marks or college marks is really dumb, cs the grading varies across the country, there are certain colleges where passing is hard and there are other colleges ( arts) where not getting 10 is hard. Of course, no system is perfect, just because there are some issues with these exams like JEE/NEET( like many people don't make it- you can't blame the same in a highly populous country) is not valid argument against such exams that produce among the best minds of the world

Heard of Gaokao? That's the only exam Chinese have. Similarly for South Korea. But we have many exams for different paths.
