I have the Magicians series on my shelf and I need to finally pick it up. It seems like a fun premise. The Mistborn series is probably my favorite. I think it is a great series to get into adult fantasy especially.

I loved the witchland books. Great suggestion for starter series in fantasy. I also loved Mistborn. Rise of Empire sounds interesting, I haven't read those.

Don’t understand why the younger generation of advisors ignores some of the older series by well know classic authors. My pick for a starter would be Anne McAffery’s Drangon Rogers of Pern series. You could read the original three books and be happy or continue on with all the others written over a 30 years span by her and sometimes her son. What could be greater than Telepathic, Teleporting Fire-Breathing Dragons with human riders

I’m still trying to make my way through your recommendations from last year in your top ten video (which is how I found your channel). I’ve loved everything you’ve recommended so far. Thank you so much for that! I enjoyed the Sookie Stackhouse series, but it went downhill towards the end. The first few books were really fun though. I’ve yet to read any fantasy series that I love more than ASOIAF, but that’s not exactly an introduction to fantasy. 😉

I recently read the Dresden Files, and it's so much fun! Very fast shot up to one of my fav series ever. I agree that it would be good for beginners, they're easy to read, and I gobbled them up at like 1 book/day. They also start out very contained and 'small-scale' and none-intimidating (as some epic fantasy series can be quite intimidating), but there is still space to grow as the series progress.

Thanks for the reccy's trying to break into the fantasy genre this year. Mistborn was already on my list, I also got Brian Mclellans Promise of Blood trilogy, V. E. Scwabs Darker Shades of Magic trilogy, Jay Kristoff's Nevernight duology? And started reading Brandon Sandersons Skyward and Nicholas Eames The Band series, read both of the first books and am waiting to get the sequels.

Nevernight is a trilogy as far as I know, and I also need to read that as well as A Darker Shade of Magic, i need to know what the hype over Victoria Schwab is haha.

There are some good recommendations in there. I just read the six of crows and crooked kingdom last week and frankly I don’t know what to think. It was very well written and all the loose ends were tied. I didn’t understand why they were so young. I had to force myself to imagine them older. But yeah. I can see why people love it.

I'm tempted to recommend my own fantasy novella series, but that probably wouldn't be cool. The 'Golden Torc / Many Coloured Land' series by Julian May is a Sci-Fi / Fantasy cross over series that's a lot of fun. People gain telepathic and telekinetic abilities from ancient artifacts. Also, it's set in paleolithic earth so there are lots of cool creatures.

The first fantasy book was the Sword of Shannara. I was so addicted I used to read under the covers with a torch after my curfew :)

haha I had a similar experience with Sword Of Truth, it was my first epic fantasy read after LOTR which I read as a child, and i was hooked. Looking back now though, I never continued with that series because i don't think it's that good, but at the time I was very new to the genre and liked it a lot.

As someone who just started reading six of crows and is a begginer of fantasy, I disagree that it's for beginners, I'm heaving a hard time keeping up with the charchters and the story is taking forever to build. However I am interested in the Shadow of the Fox book, as that seemed like a plot I can get behind. Thanks for the recommandations.

Even sanderson says that mistborn is not as epic fantasy ish as way of kings (in his latest lecture series he mentions this).

I expected to love Mistborn because I had really liked Elantris, which was considered inferior to it, but I was disappointed. I gave that series only three stars. A low 3, whereas Elantris was a high 4 for me. I had issues with the execution, actually. The ideas were not bad, I just think Sanderson could have done better.

@@oana-mariauliu5828 didn't know people consider elantris inferior. I enjoy all of his books. I think it depends on order in which people read his books. I know those who read mistborn first love mistborn a lot, and same with elantris and stormlihhy archive readers.

@@ladylizcreates7719 I like Sanderson as a person, but I don't like all his books. I don't hate them, either, I just think they're overhyped. I'm glad you like them. It's always a matter of taste. My problem with his books is that I appreciate the idea, but I find the execution not as good as expected. He could spend more time on that. He is like a writing machine, he delivers and delivers and delivers... I wouldn't mind waiting longer if that meant better results.

Hi! First of great video! But I would not recommend six of crows to beginners. I read it as a beginner. It was hard to get in to without understanding the world. And the shifting of character each chapter made it even harder. Beginners should begin in shadow and bones from Leigh! It’s an easy read and you get to know the world of grisha.

@@IasminaEdina Have you reread it recently? I gotta ask, my biggest problem with it was the main character is majorly sexist and constantly commenting on women's bodies. Does he improve in this? He's also very whiny and entitled. I just couldn't handle it. Is that his character arc, learning to not be an entitled sexist?

Witchlands is 4 books! Sightwitch is the third and Bloodwitch is the fourth.

well technically Sightwitch is the prequel novella, isn't it? So sure, it's part of the series but it's not necessary to read it to get the main story. That's why i didn't mention it, lots of series have many novellas that go with them but it seems confusing when you're trying to present the series to someone for the first time so I tend to not mention them. If someone is interested in the series they can look it up and see that there are also novellas for further reading 😊

I am a non native English speaker, but i think if you're struggling with the language, then read the translated version in your own language 🙂 these books are popular enough that they all have translations across multiple languages I'm pretty sure

As great as The Magicians series is, it's in no way introductory. It's chock full of fantasy tropes and allusions that you kind of need to be somewhat versed in the genre to understand.
