In part 2 of my IBM battery disaster video series (for part 1 click • IBM 5170 battery disas... ), we try and get the machine up and running by tackling the expansion cards. The hard drive and disk drive controller card, the memory expansion card and the serial / parallel card. I'll also show you how to setup your 5170 in different ways.
There will be a third (and perhaps also a fourth) part in this series, as we haven't reached our end-goal yet.

IBM liked to go completely nuts with their naming, and rather than "mainboard", "motherboard", or the Apple-style "logic board", IBM documentation usually refers to it as the "system planar".

The nomenclature was consistent with their other equipment. Precise nomenclature was important, because IBM got its deserved reputation for service from a bulletproof process whereby a faulty component could be instantly replaced in the field by a mobile service tech. I saw this system in action on a couple of occasions. An IBM guy would show up on any day at any hour with the right part. IBM equipment was broken down into FRUs, field replaceable units. Lenovo laptops still are organized this way.

I won $10 by betting a friend that I can put a motherboard in the bathtub and it would work the next day. Took out all the chips I could, stuck it in the water for 10 mins, then let it airdry. I invited my friend over the next day and he watched me assemble it. Booted up first try. 13 year old me was pleased ;)

That battery that went haywire was from a reputable company, Tadiran! Good work. I worked for a small company in the mid 80s while I was finishing my grad school - we had a contract with IBM and received one of the very first AT computers made. It had one of the hard disks with a design flaw. We went through 3 disks in about 5 months. I had that computer set up so that we could dial in from home with a 300 baud modem and upload our programming work (compiled BASIC and Pascal). We also set up a primitve IBM Personal Computer Network - the great grandfather of all DOS/Windows networks. Looking forward to the next video!

Impressive job so far. This poor machine was really far gone, and now it's looking like it wants to join the living again. Makes me happy. The 5170 has been my dream PC since forever. I first encountered it in high school back in the 80s. We had a class room full of old systems of various kinds, and a singular, but glorious, 5170 with a colour screen. This C64 guy found it incredibly fascinating. So big, so fast, so mysterious. I've wanted one just like it ever since. This was in 1985, they were quite new (and insanely expensive) then. :)

Nice save on this machine. I have two of them myself. One I had back in the 90's. All original and one I am assembling. I am sticking with the full size 5.25 drives for both machines. The 2nd machine, I am assembling from parts and adding the XT-IDE so I can boot from a SD card. I had the original case from years ago and used it for other boards but I decided to find a original motherboard for it, which I did find out of Ukraine. A surprisingly perfect original board. What fun!!

A little late to the show, but here is my method... dishwasher works very well (ultrasonic cleaner is better), compressed air (Not the cans!) to remove residual water to avoid air-dry oxidation of the board components and traces, followed by de-oxit on exposed metal contacts and sockets; and next time, before manhandling the port hex screws, use a little penetrating oil (like WD40) to loosen the rusted parts (gently tapping with a jewelers hammer between attempts to unscrew with the nut driver and gentle scraping with dental picks). Also good, use of vinegar to deal with rust. To take it to next level and definitely "over the top" use spray EMC shield paint on rusted metal shielding parts. (Very expensive, but very clean looking).

When I first saw somebody mistreating a mainboard (yes that's a legit term) with brake cleaner, I was horrified but apparently it does the job nicely and it is no harm to it. So there is stuff the rgenerates rust, stuff that creeps into the old threading and whatnot. I'd just pry off and desolder the connectors and see that I get the card cleaned off and wehther the PCB is damaged or not. Finding the proper connectors should not be a problem , they are pretty common.

GSetup saved my behind 15 years ago when I got a Mitsubishi 286 with a dead battery. It was the first computer I'd ever encountered in real life without a setup built into the ROM and of course all the original disks were gone. Thankfully, Google had already been invented by then :-D Oddly enough I never managed to get that controller card and hard drive to boot in any other 286 or that hard drive with any of my controller cards, that was the first thing I tried, before jumping down the rabbit hole of finding a setup disk. I also had to guess the hard drive type, fortunately it was type 2. That computer ran a CNC milling machine via a dedicated ISA card and DOS app. The mid-term solution was to copy the old hard drive's contents to an SCSI hard drive and then onto a Pentium I with freshly installed DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11.

Motherboard is the older term I think and predominantly related to PC's during it's popularization. In widespread use when duaghterboards were more common. Mainboard is a more contemporary term, probably coming about as more manufacturing shifted to China and many more technically sophisticated devices included "boards", and not just personal computers. I recall hearing people calling controller boards in refrigerators, game consoles and TV's motherboards, and being irritated by the misuse and appropriation of the computing term. There you go.

Last week I found a very rusty PC with... wait for it... an 1155 "board" (problem solved) :D in it... not very retro, I know. But it was in the very same shape, as this one. I can understand how that happens to a machine of this age, but 1155? Tone of dust and dust bunnies, rust and some kind of unknown goop was on it. I hosed it down with brake cleaner, then IPA, then compressed air, no water. I still have to repair several bent pins in the socket, then I'll finally see that it was, of course, a lost cause from the very moment I found it. Unlike yours :D Another great video, thanks :D

For that setrial/parallel card, I'd spray it with Deoxit D5, let it sit a few minutes, then scrub it (with the Deoxit still on it). Then scrub it with alcohol. IBM referred to them as "planars" rather than motherboard. Another trick to dry them after washing is to use alcohol. Soak the board in IPA, which will bond with the water and pull it out. the alcohol dries out far quicker than water. The serial and parallel connectors on the card are standard. You can steal them from anywhere basically. Older ATX motherboards with non-stacked ports are a good source.

If you can't find the exact connector for that Serial/Parallel card, you could also do a bit of a "ghetto" fix for now by just soldering cables to where the connectors go and ensure the other end has the female connectors (so maybe if possible find some serial and parallel cables with female connectors, and strip the wires to solder them into where the connectors would go) Though I imagine you can probably use the computer just fine without the parallel or serial ports for now (since the only things i can think of using with them would be printers, serial mice, and serial modems)

Very nice ! Out of curiosity, what kind of keyboard does this computer require ? AT or XT ? As for cleaning boards with water, I have few advices/techniques that I use that work rather well and take way less time. First of all, though this is my personal opinion, maybe it's totally safe, I wouldn't put nasty motherboards alongside things that are used to eat. I clean my boards in the bathub with soap and a brush to remove all the dust. This is faster than the dishwasher (although it you have to clean many boards, the dishwasher would be faster). As for drying, I use a hair dryer right after the clean. It's much faster than leaving boards outside. That way, I can clean and dry boards in about 20 minutes each. Although it's better to leave them away for several hours after the clean indeed, but two days is excessive in my experience ^^

sorry for a dumb question: what is ESR and how do i determine if a cap is bad or not looking at ESR?
@nickwallette6201
@nickwallette6201 4 жыл бұрын
Equivalent series resistance. It’s a measurement of how much resistance there is for current flowing through the cap. (Complicated somewhat by the fact that DC shouldn’t flow through a cap at all, except when charging.) A good value is 0. 😁 Slightly over that is fine. Multiple ohms is probably a sign of aging or a bad test. Several ohms is definitely a problem. Open circuit is clearly a failure. Different types of caps have different normal measurements. Ceramic and film should be very very low. Tantalum is fairly low. Electrolytic may be an ohm or two. Size (capacity) and other ratings affect what’s normal. Some caps list ESR in the datasheet, others list values that can be used to calculate it.

Which that footprint is still on the market today, so their is hope for restoring functionality of the card. The depth is the big issue, because they are deep ones, hense the .590" guess. The connectors on the serial/parallel card looks to be standard angled d-sub connectors. Should be cheap from parts suppliers or Ebay.

Use a parts house like Digi-Key / Mouser / etc. You can view the data sheet and get measurements from the through-holes to the PCB edge.

@@RetroSpector78 The original connectors on the board were supplied by AMP. Today AMP is TE Connectivity. They are likely your best bet for finding a connector with the same measurements for the through-holes. Their catalog can be found at www.te.com/commerce/DocumentDelivery/DDEController?Action=srchrtrv&DocNm=82068_AMPLIMITE_Right-Angle_Posted_Conn&DocType=CS&DocLang=English. Digikey, Mouser, etc carry their connectors.

we can discuss on how effective a dishwasher is in cleaning a motherboard. But my argument is: I wouldn't want a device full of lead and God knows what other harmful chemical products placed in the same place where I wash the dishes from where I am going to eat!!! Be very careful!!

@@RetroSpector78 Hi! Thanks for the your videos! Tip nº1 for washing the mb, remove all things (cpus, chips, dims etc) that you can remove! To dry the motherboard out, personaly, the ideal solution its to give her another bath! But this time on isopropyl alcohol, since it doesnt like water. Them dry it on warm ventilation.

Yeah it’s a bit of a challenge but why not ... if all fails I’ll just pop in another card. Not that big of a deal. But would be nice for the next owner to have original IBM cards in it, as the machine is pretty much stock IBM.

it's overkill but if you've done PCB Designing. and can duplicate it bit for bit, rebuild a new card using the same IC's, it wont be a REAL IBM card , but at that point your better off using that other 8bit I/O card you showed off.

Well, it was kinda dumb to snip random capacitors off for no reason (tantalum capacitor usually fail short, if they would, the PC won't boot at all) before cleaning an obviously corroded spot.
@RetroSpector78

Well ... the pc did not boot with the MFM card installed. After replacing the caps the pc did boot. The corrosion was causing the floppy drive issues. The caps were preventing the PC to boot.

Motherboard is a term for when they had motherboards and daughterboards where the motherboard was a backplane, and the daughterboard contained the main CPU, RAM, etc. So technically, the term is wrong. Mainboard is the correct term.
