These were the BMW of laptops of their time and still are an excellent older system that will run the lighter distros of Linux, like M18, just fine even on 2 gigs of RAM. Nice that the T43 is still getting the appreciation it deserves !!

I've always loved the design of the older IBM/Lenovo laptops. I simply just loved the square design and the way the edges feel smooth. I never got into that "Rounded" design laptops from Dell, HP and Toshiba started doing. The only "Rounded" laptop I've ever had is my current Laptop, which is an Asus K55n mostly because I've always used ASUS desktops and they were always reliable. I formally used IBM, even after they stopped making computers, I would just use older laptops and my former laptop from IBM I used all up until I could no longer patch XP.

By the way....some of the older thinkpads had aone back corner with a "flat" instead of right angle (hard to describe without a pic) that I assume made them easy to pack in a suitcase or bag with round corners. The level of attention on these older Thinkpads was most impressive...

I happen to have a 15.4 inch Lenovo ThinkPad T61 with the 1680x1050 resolution screen. It also has the higher-end Core 2 Duo T8300. Upgraded to 3 gigs of RAM, it's possibly the best Windows 7 machine you could ask for (other than the older Dell Latitudes, such as the D620). Originally shipped with Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit.

Have a gently used T43 in my laptop "fleet"....these were and remain EXCELLENT units but you will probably have to install a linux distro....have run Linux Mint and 32bit versions of MX on mine without issue. The IBM nagging includes BOTH the Hard Drive and Wi Fi card if I remember correctly.

I recently got one of these, 14" with same specs as yours. Plays quake 3 fine so all good. I'm surprised how cool this thing runs, they massively oversized the heatsink compared to other Pentium M laptops i've used, it's the only laptop I own that I can actually use on my lap without getting too hot for comfort, in fact it doesn't get hot to the touch at all even under stress. Something interesting about these machines is that they actually use SATA for the hard drive internally, but have a SATA to IDE bridge chip on the board, so you can somewhat easily modify the T43 to use a SATA hard drive. Apparently because of this, IBM decided to put a nag message up every time you booted if you used a non-IBM approved hard drive, and of course people have made modified BIOS images to remove this. I also got 3 T40s with the ati 32meg graphics but they're all dead, maybe because IBM neglected to install a heatsink on the GPUs. They are salvageable but they would require BGA rework which i'm not equipped to do. On a brighter note, 2 of the 4 batteries are in great condition! I really don't know why they went with a parallel port on these, I know the LPT port is hooked up directly to the system's i/o bus and theoretically you could do more with it but in practice (and especially in a business environment) a serial port is generally much more useful. Also idk what it is with these Panasonic opticals in the thinkpads but once they get worn out to a certain extent they start ejecting at random, the drive in my W500 does this.

Do you have 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7? I also have a T61 with the Core 2 Duo T8300 and it originally had 2 gigs of RAM, but I find that 64-bit Windows 7 can barely run smoothly with only 2 gigs. So now my T61 has 3 gigs and runs perfectly fine.

This is a very nice find man, I love these era ThinkPads (obviously). The T43 is a model I've wanted for a while actually. One thing I'd like to point out is that a common complaint about ThinkPads until somewhat recently was their displays were always quite dim compared to the competition. I think it was around 2008/2009 when they introduced the x00 series (T400/500, R400/500 & X200) they actually started using LED backlights instead of CCFL which drastically improved the display brightness. I remember my R500 had a really nice bright display, and comparing it to my R61 I have now (which was it's predecessor) it's much dimmer than I remember my R500 being since it uses the older CCFL backlight.

I don't mean to sound like a prick, but that T43 isn't all that highly spec'd. It's actually pretty typical for a 915 Pentium M laptop. The T43 was actually offered with a 1600x1200 IPS display for 15" models only, which IBM called "Flexview". With that being said, it is a nicely configured unit. Being a 15" model and having Intel graphics makes it kinda unusual, and more reliable than the ATi variants. Plus the 1400x1050 resolution on the 15" screen is nice too. If you want, you can get a Pentium M 770 (2.13GHz) off of eBay for next to nothing now. Unfortunately, the Intel 915 chipset can only address 2GB of RAM, so you're stuck with that, even though it will take 2GB per slot... The optical drive popping out at random is curious. My T42 used to do that. I read somewhere (probably the ThinkPad forum) that it's down to the southbridge possibly having issues, but I dunno, to be honest. $20 well spent if you ask me. :)
@accordinglyryan
@accordinglyryan 9 жыл бұрын
MrMaguire Wow, didn't even know that was an option. Nevertheless I got way more than I was expecting. Yeah that sucks unfortunately, but oh well. I have had a couple Dell laptops that do the same thing with the optical drive; I think it is due to something in the optical drive itself (a sensor or something) going bad. I totally agree, couldn't pass this thing up.
@Jallge
@Jallge 9 жыл бұрын
***** Hmm, that's interesting. A lot of ThinkPad enthusiasts do screen swaps from other models, and even other laptop brands, particularly Dell. So maybe you ran into one of those. Another curious thing is that a lot of the R series ThinkPads have Firewire, whereas the T series don't! Plus a lot of them seem to have protective covers over the LCD ribbon cable, which is completely exposed on other models! You'd expect what IBM and Lenovo called a "budget" series to be a bit more, well "budget" than that.

@Jallge
@Jallge 8 жыл бұрын
Luke Shaver The Pentium M 770 (2.13GHz) is the second fastest that will work. The fastest is the Pentium M 780 (2.26GHz), which is still around double the price of the 770, but neither are expensive now. Unfortunately the Intel 915 chipset doesn't work with Core Duos or Core 2 Duos. Maybe if the T50 motherboard becomes widely available, you can get one of those! forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=114057

Very nice machine, I miss ThinkPads like this. The current ones are still really nice machines, but not as tough or tough looking, in my opinion. Does this have the rubber-like coating on the lid? I also have a used Dell Inspiron (used) which I got before this to put ArcaOS 5 on and it works fine, but have a small HDD with Windows 10 which the seller put on it also. The Lenovo worked just long enough for me to setup the OS and then the screen went blank after the boot screen goes blank on bootup.

My IBM ThinkPad t43 from 2005 has a Pentium m single core at 1.86 GHz but it can reach speeds up to 1.87GHZ. It has Just 1GB of ram. And the graphics are actually radeon mobile Same hard drive though.With Windows 10, I was unable to obtain graphics drivers. Windows 7 Starter was a hell of a mess. The installation of Windows XP that came with it hogged the CPU @ 100 all the time, so I reinstalled windows XP with its unofficial SP4 and it runs very well. My screen is also 1440by1050, But i have it set to 1024by768 beacuse i personally think that it looks better and peformances better. The battery is also good, giving 45 min with the setting "Minall power Management". GTA San Andreas is also a hell of a mess, But its playable at 25-30 FPS. overall, I think its a OK laptop. 360p Video was the max i could get without stuttering, and thats with chrome 49. I personally think chrome is faster that firefox on a XP computer like the one i have. I really want to make a video about this laptop, but i dont have very much time with school and homework.

watershed44 Eh, I don't think it makes much of a difference. Lenovo ThinkPads are just as good as the IBM ones imo.

watershed44 That is somewhat true, I know for a fact they actually have two different design teams doing the ThinkPad line and their consumer grade crap, so it will probably be unlikely that ThinkPad quality will go downhill anytime soon. Lenovo's been doing this for 10 years now and they're still just as good now as they were back when IBM made them. The people who complain about the quality going downhill either haven't used a Lenovo made ThinkPad or just like to live in the past.

The hard drives are shit. I am having big issues with it. You can barely touch it and it freezes. Everything else worked fine and I was surprised to find bluetooth on it. I wanted to turn it into an emulator with it having bluetooth for controllers. I really don't want to ditch the dvd drive for a sata conversion hard drive bay. I bought mine for $20 also at the thrift store with charger. Luckily it is in decent state. I'm trying hard to get windows to boot from an external hard drive.

And the hard drive isn't worth replacing. They cost more than I want to spend to resell it. I might just ditch the dvd drive for an usb dvd and put and get the sata bay and put a nicer drive in it.

Actually typing this comment on a T43 I picked up two weeks ago at a local Good Will store. Unit looks to have just set in an IT dept at a local State Agency before being donated. These units are VERY rugged and make great laptops to toss in a bag for the coffee shop. These units were made before the Chinese took over and the build quality started to decline. The keyboards for example are excellent,
