Middleware is software that enables one or more kinds of communication or connectivity between two or more applications or application components in a distributed network. IBM Master Inventor Martin Keen gives a simple example of an online purchase of a water bottle to paint the picture of Middleware and how it works.

Me Vs IBM 😶‍🌫️: A middleware is an entity lives between tow or more different types of entities in a network or a system. It helps to unify communications between those different entities by controlling and reformatting data structure or type to be able to exchange ( serve or processing) data for exemple from xml to json then pass the requests to API of the receiver. Example: payment device in store send data in xml format, the middleware take this xml and transform it into json and send data to mongodb.. the API are just a simple interfaces act like entry point to our application. 😂 This is how I memorized the middleware role when we studied systems and applications architecture in university 14 years ago 😅

If REST can consider to be a middleware, then can web framework such as Spring, Django potentially be sort of a middleware? Since they help us to handle logics other than business

REST is basically a way of communicating with middleware, not the middleware itself. A database is a middleware and and to place new data in the DB, you use a PUT. Similarly, you can use GET, POST, DELETE, etc.... Django, on the other hand, is a python framework for Web development.... I hope this helps....

This channel generally creates good content. However, this particular video is not very impressive. In Enterprise Systems, Middleware is much more than REST services. This seems to give a wrong idea about what actual middleware is! In my humble opinion, Middleware facilitates communication between two services that might have different schema and attributes.
