I read from the highly recommended book 'Ibn Taymiyya (Makers of the Muslim World)' by Jon Hoover, Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Nottingham. www.amazon.co.uk/Ibn-Taymiyya...

I don't really care what İbn Taymiyyah has to say. I care about what Islam has to say. The Sunni consensus is that mawlid is a biddah hasanat. A very positive innovation, suited for a time when people are forgetful of the prophet and his life.

Amazing video! Ibn Tayymiyyah has been misrepresented by both his modern day opponents and supporters. Ibn Tayymiyyah was a very deep thinker who thought with a lot of nuance. I would say I am a traditional muslim opposed to many of the things Ibn Tayymiyyah said, yet I appreciate his contributions. His conception of ijtihad was unique and very special indeed. May Allah reward you for this wonderfully explained video.

Simply put, the Mawlid is celebrated by thanking our Creator for the Mercy that was sent to Mankind. Truly a Favour upon Mankind. Otherwise what would be our state?

May Allah reward you brother Paul. But I would like to clarify one thing here that a Muslim has no hesitation in accepting that a Muslim will be rewarded for his good intention in doing any act of worship even if it was not legislated by the religion provided that he was unaware of its prohibition or disapproval, just as no Muslim will be punished for committing the sins that he did not know were considered as sins in the religion. This is one of the most basic principles of Islam and no follower of Imam ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy upon him) would have any problem in accepting it. But good intention does not make the deed acceptable in and of itself as ibn Taymiyyah himself said that these people will only be rewarded for their intentions and not the deed. So as far as the act itself was concerned then his position was quite clear that it is undoubtedly prohibited and greatly disliked in the religion and his whole life and his struggles against the innovators bears testimony to that fact

With due Respect, the writings or the opinion of Jon Hoover means absolutely very little to the people who have understanding of the religion of Islam. He is neither a scholar or a reference of Islamic Studies. The view of Ibn Taymiyyah regarding celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (peace be upon him) or visitation of graves is that, it is a bid'a an innovation; Thus not from the legislations of Islam. If you truely want to know the view or the life of Ibn Taymiyyah. There is no better person to tell you about him, than his own student. Ibn Qayyim al Jawziya.
