IC 1101 - The (Old) Largest Galaxy Ever Discovered

This giant elliptical galaxy completely eclipses the Milky Way, Andromeda, and every other galaxy in the known universe. But how did it become so large? What could be lying within? What does the future have in store for this titan of the heavens? We don't know much about this monster, but that hasn't stopped people from speculating on the possibilities that could lie around its estimated 100TN stars.

Doubt it. took 2.5 billion years for life to go from single cell to multi-cell on earth. that implies it's an incredibly difficult jump to make. There's a non-trivial chance that complex life is extremely rare.

@@flat6croc Even the most improbable event will emerge given time and countless possibilities, look at the concept of Boltzmann Brain, beautiful piece of human imagination. Life doesn't need to be organic and carbon-based. Why do we even assume life isn't possible to exist in deep space? Just because we emerged from a different path? It's still more probable that somewhere there exists a life similar to ours, rather than we're the universal scale exception.

Humanity's understanding of the cosmos has and probably will again, go through unprecedented revelations.

I think the fact that we’re so small is actually cool. Like someone else said, it’s kind of humbling. In a universe with so many galaxies that age differently, collide, and stretch out from each other forever (meaning galaxies in different local groups), suddenly there is so reason for anyone to act self centered, to feel that they are most important. Rather, being alive is like having a ticket someone gave you to experience what doesn’t even seem possible, for such a short time. The universe is so old. And we are so new to it.

Being made of the seemingly insignificant and common universal elements coming together to become aware of existence in all of it's glory is exactly what makes us significant, if you ask me. Even if we are an infinitesimally small percentage of matter within the universe and basically invisible relative to it's sheer vastness, the VERY fact that we are even here to reason with eachother about it has to be of some importance. We quite literally are the universe comprehending itself. I don't know how we can approach that any other way, if you really think about it.

To think that being only a fraction of a trillion makes you insignificant is absurd. Earth itself is extremely rare. Living things are also extremely rare. Then count in the fact that a planet has sustained life long enough for it to evolve. And then count in the fact that through an extremely complex evolutionary process, it creates an intellectual species. Earth doesn't have the only living things, but its still insanely rare. We are lucky enough to be in the prime window of time in space, safe from it's fiery birth and eventual icy death.

Earth is a planet. 1 out of about 8/9 or so in our solar system. Our solar systen contains a Star we call the sun. 1 out of 400.000.000 in our Galaxy. Of wich.. every star contains between 0 to maybe 20 planets depending on solar system size. Our Galaxy is 1 out of BILLIONS in the observable Universe. And the actual universe is estimated to be dozens if not hundreds of times larger then what we can see right now. We as individual people are so insignificant, even if you would jump of a cliff. It will probably only affect about 1 to 150 people directly out of the 8.000.000.000 that live on earth. Everyone else wouldn't give a single fuck. *THATS* how insignificant we are. You dumbass

@@jupitersspell to be very honest. We do not know how rare life is. The fact we didnt find it doesnt mean its not there. Not all life must have satelites that we can detect. Most life on our planet is wildlife that can barely hold and use a stick, wich by the way. How are you going to detect life on another planet? There are TRILLIONS of living beings on our planet and yet from our satelites. We can barely see all of these. (With exception of cities. But those arent living, their concrete structures) We can't see living beings on planets due to their small sizes compared to their planets. A planet can be FULL of life and we wouldn't know it until we can see them on the surface. Wich wud need probes and satelites traveling and landing there. Wich takes forever to do. Life could be very common for all we know. But we don't know until we see it

Hearing all these astronomy findings make me question what the hell are we doing in this universe. Like how the hell did we come about? I'm looking around my room right now and something just feels off. I feel like "What is consciousness?" is more of an astronomical question than it is any other field of study

Accept you are mortal, because some day you will die and stop to exist. We have evolved in such a way that death is almost inevitable. So you just deal with it. Get pleasure and significance from your job, from your loved ones, from your avocation, art, literature, music. Be kind to people, animals and nature, learn and discover as much as you can, share the knowledge and science. So what if life is somehow in a way pointless? It is enough that you exist, that you are here now, although briefly, but with all of humankind. And it's an amazing, astonishing, remarkable, totally mind-blowing fucking awesome feeling.

Holy hell I never even considered that. If you were a life form on a planet that happened to be in the interior of this stellar monster, there's a high probability you would never be able to see anything outside of it. It would be nearly possible to see the universe outside your own backyard. That's fascinatimg and terrifying. We are so incredibly fortunate to be where we are.

SEA needs to be making documentaries with the BBC. Their budget and technology + his clear passion for the subject matter and you’ll have a winner. For a young dude, his voice carries a certain gravitas, in some ways similar to John Hurt, who I believe also narrated a number of documentaries.

I mean, would you not think the galaxy to be the whole universe if you CAN'T see out of it due to its size and brightness?? They cannot see anything and thus like medieval times for us they would think that galaxy is all they will ever know. Their revelation comes when they find out there is way more to it then just their galaxy. We are just lucky to be in a smaller and dimmer galaxy so we can actualy see further out into space

I hope the information is accurate. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IC_1101 says the size of IC 1101 is 210 000 +/- 39 light years but the video said 6 million light years at 2:22 to 2:35. Multiplying the size by 30 is pretty bad and makes it hard to trust the other information when the size is the focus of the video.

Apparently the data on IC1101 was wrong somehow and is only 300k light years across, not the 4m as previously thought. A huge difference. The current largest galaxy is ESO 383-76 with 1.7m light years in diameter.

I love these videos. They're all so well done. But I had to laugh at 10:22 when you said "it's days are increasingly numbered" bc even though I'm familiar with the saying it still seems to me that it's days are actually decreasingly numbered lol
