One of the BIG problems the US navy had in WWII was not only were people's duty stations different from their battle stations but there was no defined path to get to your station so every time a ship entered battle people had to push past each other to get to where they needed to be. Eventually we adopted up & aft on the port and down & forward on the starboard. This dramatically improved combat effectiveness.

The US started with the outdated F2A as a carrier based fighter and quickly upgraded to the more powerful F4F Wildcat (not to be confused with the Vietnam era F-4 Phantom.) The F4F's had a more powerful engine than the F2A, but were still no match against the Japanese Mitsubishi (yeah, that Mitsubishi) A6M Zero. (Barring superior tactics and the fact it was not a flying crematorium for its pilots.) The iconic Vought F4U was borne out of a 1938 Navy request for proposals for naval fighters. Turns out coupling an 18 cylinder, 2,380HP Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine and four bladed 13' 2" Hamilton Standard propeller to a plane that weighed 9,205Lbs was a good idea. Indeed, it was this arrangement that gave the Corsair its distinctive "gull wing." This, however, proved to be a fatal flaw at first. The gull wing was used to provide sufficient clearance between the prop and the ground during take off and landing to prevent a prop strike. But, with the massive engine in the nose and a relatively aft cockpit, visibility towards the front of the aircraft during approach to a carrier was practically nonexistent. Following numerous fatal crashes, the Corsair was deemed unfit for carrier service and handed to the USMC to operate from land based airfields. The Brits also got the Corsair, and, with the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm lacking any other alternative, they were forced to use it. Their pilots developed a curved approach technique, was was latter adopted by the USN, allowing for the Corsair to be reintroduced to carrier operations. The F6F Hellcat was designed as a direct counter to the A6M, and was the F4F's replacement. The F8F Bearcat, first deployed in August 1944, was the Hellcat's replacement and had a climb rate better than the F4U's. This was mainly due to a reduction in weight. The Douglas SBD was the Navy's primary dive bomber during the early phases of the war. It was superseded by the Curtis SB2C Helldiver. The Douglas TBD Devastator entered service in 1937 as a torpedo bomber. The performed well initially, but suffered heavy losses during the Battle of Midway. Out of 41 aircraft launched to strike Japanese carriers, 35 were destroyed while scoring zero torpedo hits. They did little more than distract the Japanese fighters, allowing the SBDs to sink four carriers and a heavy cruiser. The TBD was replaced with the Grumman (same company that latter went on to manufacture the F-14) TBF Avenger. The Avenger is credited with sinking both the Yamato and Mushasi super battleships and was not retired until the 1960's. The Consolidated PBY Catalina was a flying boat used by the USN for antisubmarine patrols, reconnaissance, and search and rescue. Indeed, it was a PBY that first spotted the survivors from the USS Indianapolis. The ship had been sunk after delivering the core for the Little Boy atomic bomb to Tinian Island, upon which the crew was the victim of one of the worst shark attacks, or series thereof, in history. (Fun Fact: this is what inspired the movie Jaws.) The Vought OS2U Kingfisher was a catapult launched seaplane deployed on heavy cruiser and battleships. They filled the same role the MH-60 serves in today's navy: antisubmarine warfare. They were launched from catapults (normally on the aft deck of the ship,) and used to attack subs and spot naval artillery fire. Following their mission, they would land in the water and be hoisted onto the ship via the ship's crane. B-25s were famously launched off the deck of the USS Wasp during the Doolittle raids. The one way mission's goal was to attack Tokyo before continuing on and landing in China. However, due to a Japanese fishing boat turned radar picket, the taskforce was spotted early and, hence, launched early. All planes were lost after attacking Tokyo, with three KIA and 8 POW (three of which were executed, one died from disease.) The US Army Air Force (USAAF) was also active in the Pacific. They conducted strategic bombing using B-17 Flying Fortresses, B-24s Liberators, B-25 Mitchells, B-26 Marauders (which were actually built at the airport I normally fly out of in Baltimore,) and, most famously, B-29 Superfortresses. Two of the B-29s, the Enola Gay and Bockcar) are forever engraved in history for carrying out the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. At the start of the war, the USAAF had P-40 Warhawks deployed to Pearl Harbor (but most were destroyed on the ground.) The American Volunteer Group, the official name of the "Flying Tigers" flew the P-40 against Japan as members of the Chinese Air Force against the Japanese. The P-51 Mustang did not see much use in the PTO, as it was needed for the European theater of operations. However, there were P-51s sold to China as well as American P-51s late in the war. It was the same with the P-47 Thunderbolt. The twin engine P-38 Lightning was more commonly used in the Pacific. Having two engines, either of which could keep the plane aloft, was seen as a major advantage during long over water flights. Couple that with a relatively easy to fly aircraft, four .50 M2 MGs, a 20MM cannon, a 4,000Lbs payload capacity, and a combat range of 1,300 miles, and you have an ideal fighter for the PTO. It was this aircraft that "assassinated" the mastermind behind the Pearl Harbor attack: Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto as he was enroute to Bougainville.

The performance of the F2A Buffalo wasn't actually much different to that of the F4F Wildcat, the F2A actually being marginally faster than the F4F and both having 1200hp engines. The main reason for retiring of the F2A was poor reliability due to a design that was hard to repair if damaged, structurally flawed (the landing gear design especially was prone to failure) and dificult to mass produce. It also didn't help that the final F2A-3 model added 10 inches to the nose to fit an enlarged fuel tank, ignoring that the previous model had shortened the nose by 6 inches to account for the weight of a larger more powerful engine. This resulted, unsurprisingly, in the F2A-3 being seriously nose heavy in flight which adversely affected rate of climb and added to the severity of the landing gear issues. Finally there was the general incompetence of the Brewster company management. At a time when they strugled to meet US navy orders they were still trying to sell their aircraft overseas, which lead to many issues of aircraft arriving months late and sometimes with parts missing due to over promissing on production figures (some Dutch Buffalos arived in the Dutch east indies lacking gunsights and engine exhaust manifolds!) It takes a serious level of incompetence for a military aircraft manufacturer to go bankrupt in the middle of a world war, but Brewster essentially managed to do this.

the f4f was actually extremely well matched to the zero, in that both planes were relatively comparable in terms of performance at their powerbands and altitudes. the zero was a much lighter plane so it could out climb the f4f but due to that same light construction the f4f could out dive the zero with no problem, and with its relatively superior high altitude performance it was well matched vs the the zero even though they did better in different categories. it was the early american pilot that was no match against the japanese, not the plane.

Unless the game takes a more fantasy route with the tech, just go ahead and dump the Devastator torpedo planes into the sea and request more Dauntless dive bombers. US plane torpedos almost never worked and the planes were slow and considered death traps, while the dive bombers may have sank more ships than any other plane during the war.

Most of that was due to the torpedoes themselves, though. Maybe actually have the torps be reliable, unlike the high explosive paperweights we had IRL.

I’m guessing none of the above commenters have read any books on the Battle of Midway. OP is right - nearly every American torpedo bomber in that battle was shot down, and all their pilots and gunners were killed. Yes, it was primarily due to the faulty MK13 torpedoes, but the planes themselves were absolute death traps for the more agile Japanese Zeros. At Midway, 41 Devastators recorded zero torpedo hits with only six surviving to return to their carriers.

Glory to Raptoria! Loved the video @Raptor! This kind of thing is a bit like bread and butter for me, or rather the time period is anyway. At this stage of the second world war, Aircraft Carrier Air Groups were comprised of three types of aircraft, the Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat Fighter, the Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless Dive Bomber, and the TBD-1 Devastator Torpedo Bomber also by Douglas. Over time you did see them evolve a little bit as newer models of aircraft came out; for example, the Wildcat was replaced by the F6F-5 Hellcat Fighter because it could do a better job of keeping up with the A6M Zero Fighter series, the Devastator was replaced by the Grumman TBF Avenger Torpedo Bomber in 1942 because it was to slow and was easily picked off on it's Torpedo runs, and the Curtis SB2C-4 Helldiver Dive Bomber was supposed to completely replace the Dauntless in 1943, however, the fact that it was well protected meant that the extra weight from pulling out of the Dive Bomb run actually stretched the cables and would cause in some cases complete unresponsiveness, thus the plane would end up crashing into the enemy ship as well. This is basically why the USS ENTERPRISE (CV-6/CV(N)-6) had in fact kept their SBD-3 Dauntless Dive Bombers. The Chance Vought F4U-1D Corsair was rather interesting when it came out in 1943 with the Grumman Hellcat, the Royal Navy had in fact started using it on their Aircraft Carriers 8 months before we used them in the Essex class Aircraft Carriers. In fact, it was the Royal Navy itself who came up with all the necessary design changes and landing procedures that would make the Corsair carrier capable later on. Tips from what I can tell about the game: CAP means Combat Air Patrol, basically it's a flight of Fighters circling over the Task Force to protect against air attacks and there's always going to be a CAP on duty, especially when our carriers and Aircraft were being equipped with Radar in 1943. Before then, like this time period, the Japanese had command of the Night so all the Aircraft would be down in the hangar deck or parked and tied down on the flight deck for the night. As for the CAP, try to time the retrieval of one flight on CAP with the launching of another to relive it. Be sure to also have more fighters at the ready if you detect any enemy air strikes coming your way so you can bolster the CAP. Launching Air Strikes - these will be the main punch in your arsenal, carrier air groups at this time had what was called the "Sunday Punch" which was 36 Fighters, 36 Dive Bombers and 18 Torpedo Bombers. This would later be changed around Leyte (Lay•Tay) gulf, to 54 Fighters, 28 Dive Bombers and 18 Torpedo Bombers at Admiral William "Bull" Halsey's order. Try to use your Dive Bombers to do some scouting missions and have the rest of the air group ready to pounce upon identifying the size and composition of the enemy fleet. I know this is a very long winded comment, but I hope it helps man! Keep it up!

The planes that you have on there right now are the F2A Buffalo fighter, either the SB2U Vindicator or D3A Dauntless dive bomber, (I didn't really have a good look), and the TBD Devastator. The Buffalo was America's first monoplane carrier borne aircraft. The Vindicator was replaced by the Dauntless so that leads me to believe that you have the Dauntless instead. The Devastator was the torpedo plane of all carriers up until late 42, when the TBF Avenger replaced it. The Devastator was a very slow plane, leading to many many losses to AA and fighters. American torpedoes rarely worked in the early war, though they were improved upon and got somewhat better in 43 and 44, but early war torpedo hits are maybe a 1 in 10. Or less...

At this point early in the Pacific theatre the main US planes you would have on your carrier would be the F4 -F Wild Cats as fighters, the SBD Dauntless dive bombers and Devastator torpedo planes. It was these planes the US used to hold the line until they could bring in new designs that could match and outperform the planes the Japanese had.

Fun fact: The battle of the coral sea, though often brushed over, was an extremely important battle for two reasons First, on a short term level, while it was a tactical victory for the japanese, the two carriers that were involved in this attack would have gone on to attack Midway had Coral Sea not happened. Secondly, on a more long term level, it was the official start of the carrier age, in that it was the very first time two fleets fought each other without either side ever firing a single shot at the other directly. It was the very first battle of its kind.

First they used the F4F wildcat from 1941-1943 but since it was so heavy it would be easy prey for the japanese zeroes

Coral Sea would be Buffalos or possibly Wildcats. Devastators or Dauntlesses would be your bombers.

The designations for the aircraft are in the lower right corner, under their picture. For a more detailed answer... ...Caution, infodump following: In the US Navy's identification code for its aircraft, which was different from the US Air Force's code(until somewhere in the sixties both where thrown in the trash and a unified system set in place) the starting letters indicate the type of plane... TB - Torpedo Bomber, SB - Scout Bomber and F is obviously for Fighter. Using early WW2 fighters for scouting purposes as the game portrays it is baloney, they don't have the range. The SB's do, it's in their damn designation. Generally, either Torpedo/Level Bombers or Dive Bombers were used as scouts, because of their range. But almost never a full squadron... 8 planes maximum, one plane covering 45°. So they fly alone. Sending a fighter, a single seater, out alone on a long distance scouting mission is dangerously dumb. One guy would have to do everything... fly the plane, keep on lookout, update his navigational chart so he knows where he is, and where the carrier (hopefully) is... all that before their fuel runs dry. Yeah, 2 or 3 people in one plane makes more sense for this mission at the time, wouldn't you agree? The following number, if present, tells the number of design from the same manufacturer in Navy Service. SB2U means this is the second design from designer U, which stands for Chance Vought. A stands for Brewster Aeronautical Corporation, C would be Curtiss-Wright, D would mean Douglas Aircraft, F stands for Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation and Y for Vultee Aircraft. There are more designers and code letters, but these are the ones mattered in that timeframe. Lastly, the number after the dash is the variant number. For example, the version of the Wildcat fighter in use at Midway was the F4F-4, the SB was the SBD Dauntless and the TB... was still the TBD-1. If you are familiar with the story of VT-8, which because of coordination problems, attacked the japanese carriers alone, without escort, then you know the Devastator. VT-8 was *destroyed* at Midway. Every crewman(each TBD had 3 crew) died in their Devastators either to japanese fighters or anti-aircraft fire... all but *one pilot,* who had a front row seat for the followingf fireworks, because now the Dive Bombers and escorts arrived, while the japanese fighters were still at low altitude... because Torpedo Bombers attack near sea level, Dive Bombers attack from 3-5km altitude. And yeah, the guy survived the fireworks and was later rescued by a PBY(Patrol Bomber, Vultee Aircraft) Catalina. So, the starting loadout of the USS Raptorian is: - 1 Squadron TBD-1 Devastator's, torpedo attack/level bomber - 1 Squadron SB2U Vindicator's, dive bombers/recon or scout - 1 Squadron F2A Buffalo's, Fighters Despite what the game says, 3 planes are not a squadron. And the US Navy sent out their planes in formations of 4... so 4, 8, 12, or 16 planes. And 16 is also the number of active planes in a 100% ready squadron(which includes at least another 4 spare planes).

Very deep post there, S! Just a small remark if I may, as a small contribution :) "Every crewman(each TBD had 3 crew)" At Midway there were only two crewmen in each TBD. When configured for a torpedo attack, TBDs would only carry 2 crewmen instead of 3. The 3-crewmen configuration was specific to bombing missions, where the 3rd crewman in the middle operated the Norden bombsight by laying prone (which obviously wouldn't be very practical for the pilot, and required a specific skillset that wasn't necessarily taught to gunners anyway, who were also in charge of the comms). In a torpedo attack, the aiming was done by the pilot, and at any rate the TBD certainly could do without the weight of the extra gentleman when lugging a Mk13. Cheers and keep up the great work!

@@DrydockDreamsGames Ohh, I did not know that. I assumed it worked like on the japanese "Attack Aircraft" Torpedo Bombers (B5N2 Kate in 1941/early 42). Well, the Kate had the same or more power available but was some hundreds of kilogramms lighter in any configuration, 400kg lighter at gross weight. The Kate could actually fly defensively without bomb/torpedo load, the Devastator... could for one turn, then it was nothing more than a slow target for the A6M2, or even the A5M. All it could do better than a Kate was absorb machinegun fire without springing a fuel leak and immediately become a fireball. Anyway, thanks for the correction. :) I would really hate to write up wrong information without correction. ^^

It doesn't really make sense to have a submarine as part of an escort contingent. They can't stay submerged for long and they can't keep up with the pace of the other ships. IRL the USN used them to hunt supply convoys (obviously) and also to form recon picket lines to get early warning of IJN fleet movements.
