I've had treatment resistant major depressive disorder for a very long time. I also suffer from insomnia. Ice baths have made a huge difference in my mood and sleep. It's not a silver bullet, but anything that can help you feel better about yourself, more self control, confidence and better sleep is huge. It's a weird thing. I have to talk myself into doing it every time. I don't enjoy the build up, or the bath itself, but I sure feel so much better afterwards.

I used to work at a coffee shop and the customers would always ask what I drank because I was always on 10 from like 5am but I don't drink coffee, it was always cold showers at 4am which absolutely sucked I'm too lazy for all that now, but totally cranked me up, I would get out the car Singing and banging my music at 5am, frost everywhere taking my jacket off. Body just gets used to it, discipline! I've been meaning to get back into that rythym it lasts all day. Really difficult to get back into when you can snuggle in bed till the sunrise though! It worked for me, I didn't get into an ice bath, but for August to December of 2021 and part of January 2022, I was without gas because I couldn't afford the bill. So I went without hot water during those months, I started out with 5 minute cold showers 4-5 times a week, after a month I was taking 25 minute cold showers 4-5 times a week. I felt energized after each shower, and I kick started my fat loss combined with 3-4 workouts (progressive weight lifting) at 1 hour a session, I went from 278 lbs. to 232 and kept it off most of 2022.

For those who also haven't heard of brown fat: "Brown fat breaks down blood sugar (glucose) and fat molecules to create heat and help maintain body temperature. Cold temperatures activate brown fat, which leads to various metabolic changes in the body. Most of our fat, however, is white fat, which stores extra energy. Too much white fat builds up in obesity." National Institute of Health

@@quasa0 so as I’ve gotten older I’ve started to develop ptsd from some car accidents and it opened up a worm hole of emotions where I stated to dwell on my past when I was younger out in the streets messing around with drugs and gangs. I’m clean now but just remembering those crazy times in my life would lead me into a a massive panic attack. Sometimes I would feel on edge for days at a time. I couldn’t turn it off. No matter what I would do. I tried everything from group therapy, to mens groups about anxiety, therapist, counselors, doctors. It even started messing with my appetite. Then covid hit and everything just got worse. I’ve always been a very social person. I never had problems making friends or talking to women. Covid opened up another can of worms for me and all of sudden I have social anxiety now to. I remember my buddy had a lil kickback at his new apt and when more people started showing up that I didn’t know. A huge panic attack came on and I thought it was a heart attack man it was so damn scary. My heart rate was like 150 and I was sitting down not moving at all. I had to leave I didn’t even tell anyone I just texted my buddy like hey man I had to go something came up. Anyway sorry for the long comment but one day at a therapist appt. She taught me some breathing techniques to help me slow my heart down when a panic attack happened. It helped when the panic attacks where small but it did nothing to the big ones. But I started doing more research into it cause i knew I was on to something now that I knew I could do something to help the small ones. That’s when I came across wim hof! Downloaded his app he has and I couldn’t believe how well his breathing techniques have helped me. I’m able to interact socially again with other people. I can go out feeling more confident now that I have something to defend myself from these massive panic attacks. Just knowing that simple fact as helped me so much that I rarely get panic attacks anymore! And when I do get one, which still happens on occasion, I immediately do 3-4 rounds of his breathing techniques and it almost goes away instantly. I highly recommend this for everybody! What’s even crazier is I’m a smoker 🚬 (yeah I know I need to quit 🤮 trying to!) and the first time I tried his technique. I was gasping for air after like 30 seconds of holding my breath lol 🤦‍♂️ after 3 days of doing 3-5 rounds in the morning and night. I could my breathe 🧘‍♂️ for up to 3 minutes! I definitely suggest doing beginner rounds first so you can get used to it. Wim hof has some KZfaq videos where you can follow along. But I suggest downloading the app! It’s an amazing application. Again sorry for the long comment lol! Much love!

No one is talking about the benefits of hot cold cycling! Hot as you can stand shower for 2 minutes then cold as possible water for 2 minutes then back to heat and then cold again. The 2nd 2 cycles are easy. The heat forces the blood to the skin surface and the cold forces blood back into the core. This back and forth movement really helps heal diseases and helps recovery after hard workouts. It may not be the right thing to do after an injury! But it’s great for systemic sickness such as cold or flu etc.

I have done 20 minute sessions many times before I really feel my body temp drop and start to shiver. My baths have only gotten as low as 39 degrees Fahrenheit though and there’s a major difference in ten degree intervals of temp so i can’t speak for your specific situation. Slow breathing and lowering the temperature until it’s cold, but tolerable is a good way to start. Or you could just deal with the shock that lasts for about 10 seconds and then it’ll feel better. It does feel better after a minute either way tho. I felt the same as you before I ever started. I used to hate the cold. I’d get cold more easily than anyone, and shake uncontrollably.. Doing cold showers actually helped me to not shake anymore. It even feels nice to feel a cold breeze, which feels crazy to be saying lol. Never thought I’d see the day, so I feel you.

Honestly thats the most impressive thing. Utter contempt for the temp difference. Though looking at the background, the water could very well be warmer than the air.

It’s at least another motivation to take a shower if you ever get depressed /self sabatoge. The distress tolerance you learn from it is part of dealing with fear. The other side is knowing how you are overwhelmed (resources to deal / vs / demands on you) and. To break that down, and then you need to deal with the fears on the other side of it, and shame and social comparison being like “I’m X yrs old I need to be here already” kinda stuff. You also got to feel things and find the need in it. And just process and move through it.

I enjoyed so much doing this last winter, I used to jump in the pool as soon as I woke up, and then take a cold shower. My parents got so mad bc of it lol

@@zenfulpariah2276 😂🤦🏼‍♂️ what are you, cold blooded? Not at all. Just because YOU can't, doesn't mean no one else can. 20-30 mins. I'm always running hot and am usually sweating in places where people are comfortable. Stop claiming things as if they're facts, when you're just ignorant.

Wim Hof, the man, the myth, the legend!! I have been very interested in him for over a decade, and only out of pure pride i hadn't bought any of his classes. Because I wanted to figure it out on my own or another way to do it. I watched a KZfaq video of a guy trying it out. And they didn't reveal the exact technique the whole time. The last 30 seconds, the guy gives a one sentence summary of PART of the breathing technique and Wim Hof confirms. My reaction was so automatic, I couldn't stop myself. I was instantly warmer, and to a significant magnitude greater than what I could achieve on my own. He is the real deal. And if you're not sure, humble yourself and try it out.
