It's finally time to prepare my ice fishing gear and get started. I'm still pretty new when it comes to ice fishing. However, I'm excited to get out and learn! I'll discuss the gear that I put together to get started. These items include cold weather clothing, a flasher, rods, reels, and lures.

For a 'beginner' the presentation was perfect, 10/10. In regards to pan fishing with the small tear drop jigs tipped with your choice, to weed out the small gills you can bump up to a 1/16 or 1/8 spoon (or simialr) and only the larger gills will strike along with large mouth. I love ice fishing with passion! Caught a 3lb 17" large mouth yesterday, very fun fight! Yes pictures were taken =) Good luck on the ice! -Scott H

Give it a shot and decide for yourself, besides cold water fishing can often require muted action. Depending on what your fishing for.

Use jigging spoons with a chain link and a colored epoxy glue treble hook. They work extreamely well in sweden. We don’t use flashers either, we just find the fish without flashers. But jigging spoons with a thin chain link and those epoxy glue hooks are great. I also use mormyškas. A mormyška is a little icejig with a hole through it and a hook in it. Look mormyška fishing up. It’s the most finesse ice method ever invented!

Ice fishing is something I would really like to do, but here in the Washington DC area, the ice doesn't get thick enough to ice fish, which is why none of the areas around me allow it. I would have to travel farther West or North, which I don't have time to do. So for now, I do some reel maintenance, respool some reels, organize some tackle, and twiddle my thumbs until this thin layer of ice melts away, and I can get back to perhaps a "drop-shot"! I imagine your reaction to the word "drop-shot", like that old skit, "slowly I turned, step by step, inch by inch," and so on Haha! Good luck ice fishing my friend!

Looking forward to see some of your icefishing. I've been icefishing ever since I could walk to the nearest pond, about 35 years now. 😂 Mostly I go after perch, pike and zander. For perch I use similar tungsten jig heads as you had there, but call them mormuska. I bait them with a few maggots and the big perch love 'em. Pike and zander I fish with 6-8 inch soft plastic shads and the bite is good. It's been a bit cold for fishing for a few days, -28 celcius this morning (that's -18,5 F). Tomorrow should be a little warmer, so I think it's time to go icefishing tomorrow.

Try a teaser fly off main line up above your main lure. With a dropper loop or a swivel off main braid to leader with main lure then short line with fly off bottom of swivel. Fly just floats up and down. Is it legal to use tip ups out there? In Ma. We can have 5 lines in the water. 4 tip ups and jig stick. Stay safe out there

I just layer no need for a fancy ice suit... Iuse a hand auger works fine for me! DANG you got a transducer????? I’m jelly the places I fish I just know and wait for the tip tip tip... Never used an inline reel, just basic spinning combo. Never had a line twist issue, sure I have line twist but doesn’t hurt the fish catching... Ps when the inline glove issue, put on a pair of medical rubber gloves, they keep hand warmth in but let’s you tie knots in tiny ice jigs. DEBO!!!! I told you, use a very small self tapping metal screw, get a pack of 10 for less than $1 replace them as much as you want. Tread on boots are big enough to just screw them in. I spend silly money on ice jigs, makes me sick to snag a ice jig on a branch. Haven’t ever had much luck with plastic trailers, I use wax worms or spikes they are smaller waxies and colored Either way, I am jacked and ready to get out on the hard water.

Very nice video sir. I agree suit made for hardwater is nice as set up for that. But for a beginner; all you need is an outer layer that is windproof & waterproof, & decent/good base layer like clam icearmour base layer which comes in light & heavy version,& layer onto that up too outer layer (which leaves more money toward lures,equimptment,such as power auger,flasher/sonar,portable shanty to start & worry about hardwater suit later. As electronics even underwater cameras work & a bit less exspensive than flasher for beginner. Rod/reel combos are alot to personal preference like summer fishing. Like your inline set up,Curious what brand/model is the rod & reel? As well as the blue line on it? Thanks in advance. As for line again mainly personal preference. Lures again personal preference as so many to choose from & depends on species of fish you want to target like summer fishing. If I knew what species you like,I could help you by suggesting some good,well known,proven lures for that species & alot of them used by pros some of the biggest names in hardwater. Sounds like you get about the same weather/winters we do,Although I though in Iowa had better winter/hardwater weather.

@Benjamin-S
@Benjamin-S 5 жыл бұрын
sgtpavlov they should be! Hey, do you know much about BFS stuff? I’m looking to get into BFS fishing this year. Should I start with a cheaper reel like shimano scorpion BFS? Or do you think I should buy a more expencive combo if I have the money (like an aldebaran bfs xg or an abu garcia revo ltx bf8). The rod I’ll order will probably be a kuying teton. Which line should I go with? Light braid or thin diameter fluorcarbon line?
@sgtpavlov
@sgtpavlov 5 жыл бұрын
@@Benjamin-S I know some stuff, not exactly an expert on it though. I would say, if you are absolutely positive that you want to get into BFS, and can afford a better reel, I would recommend getting a high quality reel for your first reel. If you just want to try it out, and aren't sure you want to start dropping serious cash right away, on high end gear, I'd say get the cheaper ones. Hell, if you want to try BFS out for under 100$, there's the Tsurinoya xf50(66$ on amazon, cheaper on aliexpress), and there are plenty of dirt cheap UL,L,and ML rods for spincast/push button reels, here in the US, that will work. The shakespeare micro series Light 2 piece 5'6" rod is 20$ on amazon. I have that, and the 4'6" UL version from a spincast combo I got at walmart for around 18$. With either of those 2 rods, and the xf50, it should be under 100$ for a combo. Even if you do get an expensive combo first, I think it wouldn't hurt to get a cheaper combo, just so you can have more than 1 setup to use. I don't know what country you are in. For the line, I'd say use whatever you are comfortable with. If you normally use mono or floro , for whatever else fishing you do, than go with 4-6 lb of that. If you are into braid, use that. You can always use light braid with a leader of mono or floro, which a lot of people use. I personally use light braid, 6-10lb power pro, or berkley fireline. The xf50 will not be refined, or as smooth as much as a more expensive reel, but it works. I have 2. I also have a more expensive Revo ALC BF7, which is the inshore version of the LTX BF8. It's definitely a lot better.
@Benjamin-S
@Benjamin-S 5 жыл бұрын
sgtpavlov thank you so much for the information. I live in Sweden and we pretty much only use braid. I’m very confident I’ll like BFS fishing so I might as well get a more expencive reel then. I’ll get a cheap rod (the kuying teton, it’s 54 USD). Thank you again for the good info!

Just not worth the cold and the chance of falling through the ice, did it for 3 years and sold all my stuffs, I rather use a ice rod (dock demon) off a pier then go sit on the ice.. plus I prefer cast and retrieve , open water actions over sitting n jogging or watching a hole in the ice. BUT a electric or gas augur is a must, after 5-7 holes of drilling with a manual ... yeah you’ll get pretty worn out.

Reel Fishing I mean...a gas/battery driven auger isn’t needed until the ice is over 12-14 inches. I speak from experience since I compete in different kinds of icefishing. Competition means that I literally can’t use anything else than a manual auger. I fish for 1-2 minutes in a hole and if a fish doesn’t bite I drill another hole. I’m 16 years old and I don’t get wore out by drilling 30 holes through 10 inches of ice in a pretty short amount of time. My point is not to say that I’m very strong, my point is just to say that if I can do it, most people under the age of 55 will be able to do it too. So, if you live in an area where the ice will be over 16 inches for many weeks, get an auger that is battery/gas driven, but if you don’t, I advice you to stay with the manual auger and save the extra money:)!
