Decription
This ice maker on this side by side refrigerator was not working do to a water problem. I found this out by looking to see if there was any water in the ice maker mold. I found none so suspected a water problem. I like to look or feel the water line where the water comes into the ice maker and look for ice. If i see ice I’m automatically looking at a weeping water valve. If you have a newer model I would look into replacing the filter first to see if that will take care of it. On this older model i was not even thinking about it because I have seen so many.
Water valve is the issue. We go ahead and replace the water valve. W10408179, pretty easy to do. Once that is replace we have to clear that ice and i have a good tip in the video for you on how to clear that ice. Once ice is cleared we need to cycle the ice maker and have it fill to make sure we have cleared out all the ice. It may work if you just leave it alone from there but as a technician I like to know if it’s fixed right then and there.
To cycle the ice maker you need to unplug the unit. Take the cover off to the ice maker and jump between the t/h holes to start it. Now there is no power not the unit. You plug the unit back in and make sure the door switch are shut and the emitter receiver are seeing each other. If door is open and the emitter receiver think the tub is full it will not send power to the ice maker. Once that is good plug the unit back in and within a few seconds the ice maker should power back on and it starts to cycle. Take the jumper wire out and put the cover back on and reinstall the ice maker. Once it is in. You simply wait for the ice maker to make its round. If it fills at the end you job here is done. Put anything you took off back on and happy cold water or iced teas you can enjoy now.

So appreciative of you sharing this video! Your one-line sentence about saying that if ice was sitting in the bottom of the maker then it's broken saved me tons of diagnostic time (I just bought a replacement ice maker) and your take out/put back was pivotal in me being able to replace it successfully. Thanks so much!

Thanks for posting this video. My ice maker quit about a week ago. I've been trying to get it out ever since. Turns out it was frozen in on the right side. The comment about the screw in the back holding the cover for the electrical connectors helped. I'd already removed it and it was still stuck. I applied some heat with a heat gun and melted enough ice to let it slip out. The ice maker is frozen solid. I will let it thaw overnight in the sink and try it again tomorrow.

This was a great, short video that might not fix everyone's icemaker, but it worked for mine. I just needed the patience and to make sure I was following your directions. Thanks to the poster of this video. This tip turned out to be a huge money and time saver. I was on the hook to drop almost $3k on a new fridge as mine is quite old and wifey has been asking for a new one for quite some time. A broken ice maker meant I had no other choice but to buy a new one now. However, saw this video and followed the steps and the frozen ice in the tube was the exact problem. Instead of the warm water solution, I used a hair dryer and actually saw the clump of frozen ice move slowly down the tube! Also, the tip for using a jumper between T and H terminals was priceless as the ice maker wasn't turning until I did that step. All in all, the fridge is back in business with around 30 minutes of work on a Sunday morning! Big THANKS!

Thanks much for this informative video. Our ice maker stopped working a few days ago, and after pricing new refrigerators today, I decided to give a repair a try. After resetting and jumping as you suggest, my ice maker isn't moving at all. It's getting power and it heats up almost too hot to touch (heating element for ice release, I assume) but no movement. I ordered a new ice maker today. FYI, your affiliate links go to items listed as "Currently unavailable," but I was able to find an OEM ice maker. Would have preferred to support you for your help. Might want to check on that.

Love this excellent repair video. I’m curious if the main power to the house popping off and on several times due to local city issues may cause disruptions to a Whirlpool refrigerator. My ice maker stopped working recently and it doesn’t seem to have power to it. I tried jumping with T & H and can’t get it to move. Do I I need to unplug the refrigerator to reset it and then trying jumping it again? What do you say?

Thanks to the poster great video of course I have some questions: - when I put the cable on jumper wire between T & H the motor moves but stops immediately when I remove it. How do I get it to keep running? - how did you pop off the cover that flops up and down? Mine fridge seems narrow than the one in the video so it may be a different model (I have a narrow model fridge to fit in the space the builder made too small). With that being said, on the left side the square cover my fridge has a diagram showing that I should have a metal lever to turn on (when down) or off (when up) but I don't have that switch (I have the one on the side of the freezer). Could my question 1 be related to that?

Thanks for the informative videos! Only issue is what is wrong if the ice maker does not move? This is a refrigerator that did not make ice when we acquired it.What and why I have changed so far. First, I installed a new ice maker mainly because the coating where the ice is made was coming off and getting in the cubes per previous owner. Second, I installed new boards because the light was blinking continuously whether the L/H side panel was pressed or not. Now the light is operating as in your related video but when I do the jumper in the above video, my ice maker is not moving, not even slowly. I followed the instructions in the video with no luck. Am i missing something. I am not sure if I have a faulty water valve or not because the ice maker will not get to the point to turn it on.

I've got a question for you. My new ice maker takes about 1:45 min. to 2 hours to make a batch of ice. This seems like a long time to me. Is this normal? I usually have to replace the ice maker about every 2-3 years. We use a lot of ice in this family. The coating flakes off before the ice maker fails. Also, I had to use the old wiring harness because ours mounts from the front of the freezer to the back-not from the left side to the right like in this video. The wiring harness that came with the new ice maker is about 2-3 inches too short but is exactly like the one in this video. Is there a special wiring harness that I need to buy? Our Whirlpool side by side is about 13 years old. I clean the condenser coil about every 3-4 months. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks for this video too.

Two things: 1) a blow dryer works really well in melting the ice plug on the tube feeder to the ice maker and 2) I watched you pull out the ice maker by just pressing the tab on the left underside of the ice maker but mine won’t come out as there’s something on the right side that is preventing that. Any suggestions? Thanks

Thanks for the great video, very informative. If the black spout in the freezer keeps dripping water constantly, does that mean ice is stuck in the valve or is there another culprit? If ice is indeed stuck in the valve, can I use a blow dryer to dry any potential ice in the spout or do I have to use the hot-water- in-the-bottle method you show in the video?

There has been no motor sounds, so I would like to remove the ice maker and thaw it out (maybe the fingers are frozen). I can get it to move a few mm, but it gets hung up on the right side, so I cannot slide it out like you do in the video. I don’t see any screws to remove/loosen, nor do I see any obvious ice. I need some help. I have a Kenmore that has the same ice maker setup as in your video (By the way thanks for doing the video). How do I replace the section of line that runs from the outside back of the freezer (from the water valve) through the insulation in the top of the freezer and connects to the black dispensing nipple that aims it into the ice maker? I believe that portion of line is split or cracked somewhere along it's path as I have some water that drips down the back of the inside freezer wall during the ice maker fill cycle. The black fill nipple has no ice or other blockage in it and the ice maker works fine and makes nice full sized cubes amazingly fast. Any help would be appreciated.

@BeardedApplianceRepair
@BeardedApplianceRepair 4 жыл бұрын
Are you referring to the emitter/receiver? It’s sound like you are. On the rh side you have to board with the light. It wants to see a clear path across the cabinet through the ice box. With the door open on the lh side you have a little paddle. Push that down and see if the light goes from blinking to solid. Solid means it’s working. If it’s still blinking you have a bad emitter receiver. I’ll have a link for you at the end of the comment if that’s what you need. The easiest way to cycle your ice maker is unplug the fridge for a minute and plug it back in. Wait about 30 seconds and open the freezer door. If the ice maker is running you will not see a light with the door open. If you press down the door switch you should see a blinking light on the emitter/receiver. This indicates that the ice maker is harvesting and about to fill back up with water. If it goes all the way around and fill up with water but doesn’t drop that batch in a couple of hours. Than you have a bad ice maker. If your ice maker don’t fill at all could be your ice maker, water valve or water pressure. That takes additional troubleshooting to figure that out. You can figure out if it’s your ice maker or emitter/receiver pretty easily. Here’s a link for the ice maker- amzn.to/2NfceGg Here’s a link to the emitter/receiver- amzn.to/2O1xf6E Good luck to you!

I have a similar fridge to the one in your video and it's only making ice every few hours. The line seems good and ice free. There is ice in the tray but the wheel doesn't turn when I try to troubleshoot. What can I do to check it further?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm trying to fix mine. I purchased and replaced the two control boards. I used the jumper method and now the ice maker motor cycles but no water is filled. I tested the two water solenoids for continuity (drinking water works) and they both match the new push on solenoid I purchased. Should I just go ahead and replace the solenoid? Trying to avoid that because the originals have screw on fittings. Thanks for you time!

I would make sure you’re getting power back at the solenoid. If you’re getting power you need a water valve or solenoid. If you’re not getting power you need an ice maker. If you replace the valve just cut the nuts off the tube. Make the cut as square as you can. Not to bad, I trust the new way more than the old way. Good luck!

@@BeardedApplianceRepair Thanks for the reply. At 1:41 of this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oqqSZ7iSq8mUgWw.html There's a method for jumping the water valve solenoid, which I did, and water flowed nicely. As I mentioned the ice maker gears cycle, so, I'm a little miffed. Is there another controller, other than the icemaker, that sends controls/ power to the solenoids? I think I found a good price at Mccombssupply.com in PA for an ice maker. Will let you know if/when I solve this...or buy a new fridge. ;-)

I'm confident I can replace the solenoids and cut the tubes, just didn't want to swap out something that's functional. Since I was able to jump the solenoid (at the icemaker test ports) and make it pump, would I just use a multitester on the solenoid connector, plug the fridge in, cycle the ice maker and then look for a voltage change after the "click"?
@BeardedApplianceRepair
@BeardedApplianceRepair 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah if you jumped it and water comes through, you’re looking at a bad ice maker. All the logic for ice making is in the ice maker. Once it get to the very end of its cycle, that’s when it fills. Take apart you ice maker to check out the guts, after you replace it of course. There pretty interesting contraptions.

Great video. My sensors seam to not be working. The red flashing light is not on. I tried testing it (another video) the light would flash , then stay red (if I closed the left side flap) but then minutes later i go back to check... no ice and no lights. Wouldn't you think its my sensors and not they issue you're describing. Changing the sensor seams easier to me but I'll do what you've described here if that saves me money! Thanks

Those lights can fail and it be working properly. Will you light be on at all or is it off all the time? Those are more of a pain since you don’t have that indicator. If you are getting that light blinking with the door open and such, I would agree. You can try cleaning the ir sensor with a q-tip as well. Sometimes that’s all it needs as well

the customer complaint was the water valve was leaking and the ice maker was not ejecting the cubes. On this ice maker and model of refrigerator, the ice maker and water valve has been replaced and there is no ice after 36 hours. since the broken ice maker didnt have a arm, i didnt think about whether the new one would need to be manually put into the on position or if it can that way out of the box.. can it been put in the on position without the arm?

Thanks for the video. Our fridge recently stopped dispensing the ice into the bucket. After some research, I decided to replace the Icemaker Motor Kit. After doing so, the water feed was not filling the ice tray. So I stumbled upon your video and performed the exact process for "kick starting" the process. The ice removal arm began to cycle and water was filled into the tray. Thought I'd fixed it. Well now there's ice in the tray, but the arm won't cycle through to dispense into the bucket. Any ideas what could be wrong?

Make sure you ice maker level sensor is not blocked or turned off. Its that or the thermostat on your ice maker is defective. I always replace the whole ice maker instead of modules for this reason. More than one thing could be bad. You can probably get a thermostat to repair it completely but it is more of a hassle. you can change the ice maker out in 10 minutes in most case.

Thank you for the video well done! Can you adjust the amount of water in the case of small cubes? Or is there a timing issue with the cycle?
@BeardedApplianceRepair
@BeardedApplianceRepair 4 жыл бұрын
It is timing in the ice maker. There is a slight adjustment on the ice maker on the RH side of it with the cover off. It does not adjust it much though. Hopefully you need less water because all you need to do is cut the water off slightly to give you less pressure. If you need more pressure it is more difficult and will need to consult a plumber.

I wouldn’t. You may be able to get just the heating element but it may end up being something else like a slow motor. That will explain your overfill and heater getting too hot. I recommend putting in a new ice maker.

For that I need to know how it works first, so I can be able to take the proper connection wires to each component. Can you help me with that ? Thanks, Ramon Perera, Miami.

Hi! I finally found an ice maker like ours! We have a Kenmore cold spot 106 type 2. We recently replaced our filter and we initially had trouble with the water dispenser not stopping but my hubby fixed that but since then, our ice maker stopped making ice. My hubby checked the black hose that dispenses water into the ice maker and it's soft, not frozen. The optics are working fine, so that's out. Any advice for next??
@BeardedApplianceRepair
@BeardedApplianceRepair 4 жыл бұрын
Unplug the fridge for about a minute. Plug it back in wait about 20 seconds than open the freezer door to see if the ice maker is moving. If the ice maker is moving your optics are good. If not the problem could be the optics or your ice maker. (I have ran into optics that test good on the outside with the lights but only send 90vac to the ice maker.) When the ice maker finishes the harvest it should send power down to the valve to fill it with water. If it does fill your water valve is good. So the. I would suspect your ice maker being the issue. If it does. It fill could be the ice maker, not sending power to the valve, valve , if it won’t let any water though to the ice maker due to debris being inside or selenium being defective in it. Last thing would be a frozen water line. If you have a frozen water line you need to replace the valve and clear the ice in the tube. That’s ice maker diagnosis on this guy. The more complicated part is making sure your valve is good. If your valve is getting power at the end of the harvest cycle disconnect the water line going to the ice maker off of the valve and put the valve in a bowl. Just to make sure water is coming through it. If no water comes through you need a new valve. This is only if there is power on your solenoid. Hope all this makes sense to you. I just through a ton of info at you so just let me know if you have any questions.

Extremely helpful video, as I have the exact same setup in my Whirlpool Model GD5RHAXNQ00. Just a couple of comments and one question. -Why not just pump the hot water into the outlet tube first? Would it be possible that the valve is OK and just the line froze up? -Might want to mention that there is one screw on the right hand underneath the icemaker. This screw needs to be removed before the icemaker can be removed. The video makes it appear you just have to pull out the maker. -Minor detail. Just a little slower giving out the part number LOL. I had to replay the video a couple of times to get the number. All in all great video. I feel ready to do the repair.

I also have the part linked in the description. I may or may not have mentioned that but all parts featured in my videos are linked In the description to help you find it faster. @@BeardedApplianceRepair Update: My Whirlpool is 14 years old. I already had replaced one control module about 8-9 years ago. It was still under the extended warranty. With this in mind first tested the model by inserting a wire into the T&H ports, and turned off the freezer by pushing on the switch. I was told if the module was OK, the wheel would start to spin. Nothing happened, so I ordered a new control module. Hopefully, this is the problem. If not then I will test the water valve. The worst-case scenario is that I bought a new control module that was still OK. Not really a problem. Even with the cost of a new control module and valve, still much cheaper than calling.a serviceman.

How do you reset an aquasense ice maker, looks just like this one on the video. Went on vacation and shut the water off for 2 weeks. Then returned home turned the main water back on, but no ice being made. Ran the water dispenser for a while no air in the system. The red light Emiter flashes when the door is open and stays on when you close the emiter flap. So it seems to be functioning. I can hear the pump go on trying to fill the ice tray, no water in the tray of the ice maker. Would apprecitae your feed back. I shut the fridge off as well by the main shut off switch at the top and turned it back on, like a reboot but still the same issue. This is a Kitchen Aid KSS048QTX04 side by side. Nothing in manual states how to reset it either.

Yes it can. Separate solenoids for the water dispenser and ice maker. Both solenoids are on that same part. The water coming through the dispenser tells me that the water pressure is good. So the problem is either in our ice maker or water valve. Check power at the valve at the end of the ice maker cycle and if it gets 120vac your ice maker is good and need a valve. If you don't get the 120vac than you need an ice maker.

first the ice maker was making groaning noise (it usually does this but then fixes itself). i poured hot water into the tray and about 15 minutes later, it released about 8 ice cubes, the water tray filled up again but then refroze and no more groaning noise and no more ice. i took out the ice tray and thawed all the frozen parts. i didnt squirt hot water into the water spiget because i assume thats working since water came out after i poured hot water into it. after unplugging and plugging the tray back in, the red flashing light / solid red light is no longer on after i power cycled. next step?
