After a little over a year of ownership of my ice VTX and 1600 miles, I want to give you an updated review of what I think about the ice VTX. Prior to owning an ice VTX Recumbent Trike, I own a terra trike rambler. Kenneth Brooks recommended that I try to mount the camera onto my cousin's bike so he could video record me riding.
What I was looking for in a Recumbent Trike the Ice Vtx meets all my needs. The ICE VTX recumbent trike seems to be more suitable to my taste and riding style.
So what I want to do in this video is to give you a review of the pros and cons of the 1600 miles on my ice VTX Recumbent Trike. Since this is only my second trike some of these are probably related to being on a recumbent trike in general as well as specific to the ice VTX.
My 2nd video on this channel was on May 31, 2020. Take a look at this video because it also talks about the top 5 reasons to ride a recumbent trike. Here is the link: • Top 5 Reasons to Ride ...
Cons
1. laying down was a difficult adjustment
a. breathing
b. Getting pedal leverage
c. Low center of gravity
2. Lack of visibility
3. Being an oddball
4. Perception being slow
Pros
1. Comfort
a. can do longer distances
2. Ride frequency
a. ride several times a week
b. Minimal discomfort
c. Minimum body pain
3. Easy to climb hills
4. Speed
5. It’s a head-turner
6. Rest on downhills
a. Low center of gravity
b. With increased momentum
c. Extended Coasting
7. Gear change simplicity
8. Steel frame
a. Absorbed road imperfections

I am an old roadie. Raced road and track back in 1980s-90s. Have a cyborg hip and blown Achilles tendons, and my back and neck don't like road bikes now. Better on a Mt bike, but looking at trikes. Have not ridden one yet. I like the VTX and also Catrike 700 and Expedition from reviews. I live in So. CA, it's all hills and road riding here. I need to be able to climb all the time with cars around. I would like to do some dirt trails also, but my love is road speed in the end. If I can climb Cat 4-5 hills and deal with traffic visibility a trike could be the ticket. I like your reviews of the VTX.

Thanks J Vermillion. I think with you background in being a roadie you will enjoy a trike. It may even bring back some of that passion and Zeal for being on the road with comfort and caloric burn.

Thanks for giving us your 1-year review. I think there should be cake! A couple of comments on your "Cons" from my perspective (yours are perfectly valid, of course). I've always had very few concerns with visibility. Logically, we expect drivers to see small animals and debris in the road, so why not trikes? Practically, I ride very defensively with a good light, a loud horn and prepared to stop even if I have right-of-way. The biggest concern for me is in parking lots, where I know I might be below someone's line of sight when they are backing up. I guess maybe I've just accepted being an oddball, but my feeling is that I'm riding what's right for me, if YOU think it's odd then that's your problem, not mine. I ain't got time for that. Speed perception - yeah, it exists, and depending on the trike it's likely to be true. I still smile at the leader of a 2-wheeled group ride when I was still riding my Catrike Speed. I assured him I would ride off the back, since I wouldn't be creating a slipstream for anyone behind me. He assured me that he would make sure I didn't get left behind. After 20 miles, he was impressed. After 40 miles, he was, "Damn! I had no idea you would be able to stay with us." After nearly 10 years of recumbent trike riding, I rarely have ANYTHING that hurts beyond muscles that maybe got a little pushed. Cheers and keep riding!

Great video. You have really become a polished vlogger! Congrats. So many important points you brought up. Your local cycling shop that you use should showcase your “tips” videos to potential customers. BTW..... thanks for the shout out early in the video. The key issue is that we can all learn so much from one another’s experiences and be spared problems and know what to look for. The only “ con “ I have for trikes is poor visibility for motorists in seeing us....even with the flags. My solution is just like yours....keep on the beautiful trails that are so numerous in my part of the country. Buy a good trike rack( I recommend Hitchrider) or a big enough vehicle to load the trike into and drive to the trail heads and stay off the roads. I randomly saw a guy riding one a few years ago..l struck up the conversation with “ what the hell is that?” and took a test ride on his. And that evening I was doing my research and due diligence and was out shopping at a reputable dealer the next day. I have never looked back. The trikes are so comfortable, easy on the body, safe from falls, fast and easy to climb with. There is a significant difference between the entry level less expensive trikes and the high end one you now ride. I m 68 and I ride every day weather permitting without any wear and tear on my body . The shorter rides are quick 10-15 mile sprints if time constrained ...or playing golf later in the day or they can run 25-75 miles with the occasional century rides in summer when there is plenty of sunlight. When one buys quality the price is soon forgotten as these last for many years. Price becomes a factor when one buys a low quality trike and ditches it and goes for the good stuff. BTW..... you have really stepped up your game with your cycling wardrobe! Congrats. When we get stopped...which is all the time... we have to look good! One really big “pro’ for trikes....which might not be a factor in your locale but certainly is in mine....is significantly reduced wind resistance while being recumbent. I am in coastal New England and it is windy as hell all year long and then I am in south Florida in the winter with high winds. I find that a trike allows me to ride significant distances in great comfort and do it day after day with minimal recovery time. And YES..... we can go fast as hell for long distances and climb like crazy with good gearing. Never going to beat a carbon frame Diamond frame with a 25 year old on it but I get a kick shouting out” old man on a trike passing on the left”. Stay well and keep posting. Happy holidays. Btw.... putting the camera on the trailing biker to capture you was a super touch. Good work.

My first few rides on my trike where all different. They where from positive to negative. I learned later that it was because of my pedal distance and the jeans that I was wearing. After I found that out, it went all good. I also learned about tire pressure and cornering. I started with high pressure in my tires, but I soon changed that to low pressure. This got more conford. But I noticed that a lower tire pressure, makes tgst yoy roll way faster an corners and have way less control over it. Now I ride with a higher pressure but not that hard as ad the start. Things I like about my trike, is the speed, how long I can keep up the speed, the long distances I can ride, that I have not those heavy legs after a while as on my upright and no back and shoulder problems. I love those roads that twist trough a forest or park. Riding away is a bit slower, but I pickup the speed very fast and overtake every one very fast again. I now also use it for short runs and ride trough the city. I love it tgst I can just keep my feet on the pedals and stay in my seat by traffic lights. I am now building a new trike with some changes that must improve the conford and an other way of steering. Also a lighter trike with some changes do I can get easier on and off the trike.

@@themotivatedrider3840 my recumbent had gotten pretty badly mangled in an accident during storage. My income level had also taken a pretty severe drop from when I first bought the recumbent and only now is that a point I can afford to budget to either repair it or replace it. As it will be my sole bike commuter as well as touring bike. I'm looking at an USS 2 wheel recumbent that I can transport on my subcompact car. I was told my recumbent was definitely out of date and because of the amount of flex it was amazing that I had pulled a touring trailer as well as saddlebags with it. You have definitely inspired me and I wish there was an organization to promote more pocs on the trail and in nature. Keep riding and keep posting thank you for what you're doing!

Nice review. I know the ICE VTX is a performance trike. On flat ground can it keep up with upright road bikes? I'd like to ride with a group but don't want to hold people up. I like the idea of greater stability with trikes. Enjoy.

Boy having that camera on a Diamond bike kinda go me sea sick, back and forth. Get that back on your trike, it is so much smoother on your , even your drone is better. Also if my wife and i get into your area, I would like to go riding with you. We may be in your area spring of 22, we are not sure at this time.

Dunno why, but I assumed the VTX was aluminum. Glad you pointed that out. They don't mention their tube material on their site that I can find. Now I'm wondering how many other places I assumed that and am wrong.

@@TC-yx1qt The plot thickens. If that's the case, beware of galvanic corrosion. Those two metals tend to weld themselves together eventually, but maybe that's preferred assuming you don't want to pop on a Sprint X suspension rear.

I'm no spring chick either (73 yro). How hard is it to get out of the seat? What is the maximum seat angle. Looks like you have installed a rack and a rear storage compartment. Is this aftermarket?
@themotivatedrider3840
@themotivatedrider3840 3 жыл бұрын
Yes Barry it is aftermarket, made by ICE. I am the 2nd owner of this trike and when I purchased the trike the storage came with it. I am thinking about some alternative storage options maybe a pod bag? I would like to lighten my load and most of the space I don't use.

Very well done! Congrats and keep on lovin' your VTX. Your images and commentary will be revelatory and inspirational for so many trikers and soon-to-be-trikers. (Whatever you're carrying in that trunk, get yourself a set of side pods/seat bags and put the stuff into them. They'll allow you to get the weight down lower and out of the airstream, improving the performance and the stability of the trike. You can ditch the carrier/rear rack and its weight, too. Side pods even allow you to access their contents while you're riding. Typical bags can be found by "Radical Design" and "Smokey Mountain." I'm sharing my 13 years of journey and triking experience, with 10 different trikes. My "forever rides" are a 2006 Catrike Speed and a 2014 Catrike 700. My 700 is a first cousin to your VTX. :) You can PM, on FaceBook. Search "Kim Kalen.") Happy trails and be safe, Motivated Rider!

@@themotivatedrider3840, Good move! Let us know your impressions, after a few miles with them, please. I should have mentioned that the Smokey Mountain Max bags are great for day triips. I use them, nearly all of the time. The Radical Design bags, at 12 litres each, are significantly larger, so I use them for overnight rides, groceries or when I anticipate major cargo hauling will be required. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving weekend. :)
