Welcome the Gator Overland Channel, In today's video we collaborate with ICECO to present the VL45 Fridge/Freezer. We cover fridge sizing, efficiencies using a EcoFlow power station, go over optional accessories, and show how to install the fridge slide in the bed of a truck using plus nuts. A TEXAS sized thanks to ICECO for sending out this fridge, this was a really fun evaluation and we were happy to pay it forward to Kyle for use on his future off road adventures.

Another thing that should be noted is that this frige is capable of switching between the 120v and 12v inputs automatically. I use mine with a Jackery 300 watt unit. The frige 120v and the Jackery 120v charger are plugged into my F150 bed outlet. The 12v cable is connected to the 12v output of the jackery. This means that the frige runs from the 120 volt when the truck is running, and the Jackery charges when the truck is running. When the truck is off the frige runs from the 12v Jackery output.

Thank you for pointing that out, you’re absolutely right. I should’ve been more direct about that in this video, I show it at about 14:30 them both plugged in, but didn’t cover the priority of the input

You’re exactly right, and I had actually considered doing that, and I apologize for not including it (I honestly didn’t have any food worth representing at the time) It works great for a full weekend of 3meal days, snacks, water and brews for 2-3 people. I have a 63 quart ARB that I use for our week+ trips.. I am about to do a one year review and will probably include something like that in there

Love the video. Thanks for the technical side of things. One question. Can it be left out in the rain?
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland Жыл бұрын
I did inquire with iceco about the standard VL being left in the elements… They stated that the controls should handle anything up to the point of being submerged… If you want a waterproof one go with the VL pro. There are only a few fridge options out there that are specifically weatherproof… I own one of them, it is the ARB 63 quart. If you go through any of the Facebook pages or view on Instagram, there are many people who are running the iceco coolers open to the elements without issues… I have used mine in the back of my truck for about six months off and on and no issues… I will note, my bed is mostly covered by my RTT so technically it is shielded from direct rain.

At this time no… What I do is I switch back-and-forth from the provided plug that came with the Iceco and the arb plug. If I am camped for more than a day in the same spot I will plug into the EcoFlow, but otherwise I am running off the chassis battery and the ARB plug…

@@GatorOverland got it. By the way I tested the Iceco running off the Ecoflow empty, indoors, probably 70-80 avg. temps, it ran for four days. Obviously not comparable to real use conditions but surprising none the less. Thanks again for the information.
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland Жыл бұрын
Absolutely… Obviously testing it indoors in a consistent environment MT gives you the long term test… But you should see similar results in a true environment with product on the inside because it will maintain the cool temperature longer than an empty one… At least you know worst-case scenario four days🤘🏼🤘🏼🤝

That is a very nice fridge! Would this work in the bed of a truck, exposed to the elements?
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 2 жыл бұрын
Per the advisement of iceco as long as it’s not submerged or forced intrusion it should stand up to the elements, but by comparison it is not to the same weatherproof specifications as the ARB element fridge… After review of Facebook groups and forums there are many folks that have use these for years without issues… They do make a weatherproof cover add additional weather protection and enhance the thermal efficiency.

@@GatorOverland Wow, that’s great! At a fraction of the price of the Elements fridge, I’d say this is a winner! I currently have a Massimo E-Kooler that I got at Costco for $450 (on sale), but this Iceco isn’t a whole lot more and looks way more rugged and better built. The E-kooler has been serving me well so far. It has built-in battery backup and will refrigerate and even freeze items with ease. And it’s huge! 64 quart. But it doesn’t have the baskets so items can get lost in it and is extremely big and bulky. And it’s basically just a cooler with a compressor built in. So I’m always on the lookout for a more dedicated and rugged overland fridge setup. At only $100 more, the Iceco may be the fridge I’ve been looking for. Thanks for another well-put together and thorough evaluation!
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 2 жыл бұрын
I own the ARB elements fridge, And it’s definitely a worthy unit… But to suffice, you could on two or three iceco for that price.. I did the same energy consumption test with the iceco and it lasted 52 hours… It is a 63 quart fridge and the ambient temperature was mid 90s… So 20 more quarts and 20 more degrees ambient temperature trimmed about 20hours off by comparison with the iceco 45.. after evaluation of this unit I think I would probably consider the pro model for the added conveniences and it is only $100 more than this unit… But simply there is nothing wrong with this unit at all, it obviously proves it self worthy.

If you plug in the AC and DC ports which will it prioritize? Will it swap over if 1 source dies?
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland Жыл бұрын
Yes, it will stay on if one source looses power, shown at 14:30 i apply DC and remove AC power without fault. I’m not sure which one it prioritizes.. I assume with it being a 12v DC fridge and a inverter to swap to AC it would have a 12v DC priority.

@GatorOverland 2 жыл бұрын
Very true… to my understanding they when they developed the CFX they put in a China copy of the danfoss/SECOP compressor.
@DutchK75
@DutchK75 2 жыл бұрын
@@GatorOverland The Secop is a Chinese copy of the Danfoss. Danfoss was sold to Secop and they moved the production to China. They were made in Denmark. Everything that's a centrifugal 12v compressor is a knockoff of a Danfoss. The company that owns Whynter brand was the first to copy it. Can't remember the name off hand. Dometic designed their own. VMOSO2 and VMOSO3. And it's made in China of course. But so is the Secop. Dometic's compressor runs different than the Danfoss style compressors. It'll pull and run as hard as it can to cool things down. Where as a Danfoss will run at a set speed til it cools everything down. The only ones that aren't Chinese made are the Kt511 and Kt611 Sawafuji swing compressors used by Engel. Those are made in Japan. And they last pretty much forever.

ecoflow is NOT a generator. it is a battery. it does not make electricy. it stores in chemically. good to hear that iceco does allow the unit to be held down by the handles, this is the first review i have seen stating this. but i would still like to know if screws or bolts are holding the handles, hasps, hinges on. as my usage puts it inside, and do not want the unit or stuff inside becoming missals. should have seen the inside of my old F250, after the guy hit me head on. and i was in a larger, heaver truck.
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland Жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Yes the ecoflow is a portable power station.. if I said “generator” you can mark me down for one of my many verbal mistakes in the videos I make. It is stored power, not generating.. I’m not sure if they have any other fastening method than straps through the handle. My arb elements is able to be bolted down by its feet.

do a test loaded with food. 72 hours with an unloaded fridge isn't a realistic use-case. 45L of water would be ideal :)
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 2 жыл бұрын
I’ll do that test privately and report back. This test Is about thermodynamics of a empty cooler to test the it’s efficiency against battery consumption of the power station. An empty cooler has only air and nothing to maintain the temperature internal temp.. the more stuff you put in there the longer it will stay at the temp and therefore lengthen the time between run cycles and which would extend the life of the battery. So yes, it is a realistic use of consumption of an empty cooler… The more stuff you put in, the longer it will run with the same amount of battery power… The variable is too large to say how much longer it would take to drain the power station.… water bottles could be 100hrs, steaks could be 80hrs. The point was to show its efficiency at an empty state which would yield the quickest consumption, and it proved to be at least as efficient as they advertised, and in my case better.
@ezhik01
@ezhik01 2 жыл бұрын
Mm, good point. the type and amount of stuff in the fridge would introduce quite a bit of variation, so the baseline is good at determining insulation performance vs. minimum compressor run time vs pwoerbank capacity. I just took mine on a long trip. Things I noticed: 1. Putting in pre-frozen meat and refrigerated drinks and butter and vegetables made the fridge register -5C for most of the first day, letting the top of the compartment get pretty warm. 2. Once everything was settled (same temp) I had to set the fridge to -4C to keep drinks cold at the top of the fridge. Only the walls of the fridge exhibited frozen condensate. 3. 160W solar panel is plenty good in keeping the fridge at -5C all day on a sunny day. It was 33-35C ambient the whole trip. 4. Some dirty math: My powerbank is rated 164Ah (allpowers S500,) kept topped up throughout the day, and discharged to 75% overnight (roughly 17 hours.) ICECO claims 290W consumption for 24H, ( or 12W/H.) My results: 164Ah * 0.25 * 12 = 492W consumed (29W/H) roughly 2.5 times the power consumption. I suppose the temp sensor on the fridge is pretty localized to the bottom, and that the food mass leads to some uneven temp mixing. Would be curious to see if you get similar inconsistencies in your tests (food temp at the bottom vs top)
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for following up with a thorough evaluation… I like seeing numbers like this… Yes the temp sensor is typically located near the compressor so that it doesn’t get overworked… I also keep a digital thermometer clipped to the inside for secondary reference. It allowed me to understand initially that the calibration of the fridge came at about 8° off…
@ezhik01
@ezhik01 2 жыл бұрын
@@GatorOverland Interesting! Im waiting on a small thermometer to get accurate readings. any chance those calibrations can be programmed to the fridge?
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 2 жыл бұрын
My iceco was spot on with my digital thermometer… My ARB was off by 8°… It was simple function of holding down certain buttons to activate the calibration and simply pressing the number down to what was specified on the thermometer… You would have to read the nomenclature/manual of your fridge
