I went to Iceland with my uncle when I was 16 in the summer of 1973. I truly enjoyed it and I long to go back there. I love the way Icelandic is pronounced, especially the letter r being voiceless at the end of a word or before another voiceless consonant.

Little tip: it can help if you break down the word in text. Like, for Reykjavik, you could write "ray-kya-veek" under it! I'm the kind of person who needs to read the pronunciation.

This is great but it would be really helpful if you pronounced it once at normal speed, and then repeated it a couple more times at slower speed. Thanks for posting this, I'm visiting next month and want to be able to pronounce the places we're visiting! Takk!

I want to move to Iceland.. REAL bad. I feel like there's no hope thinking of the process, the financial behemoth, the unlikelyness of being accepted... From a US citizenship that is. I'm learning what I can though!

I would LOVE.... OK actually, I NEED to learn Icelandic. I'm from usa. I requested Rosetta STONE to create an Icelandic version, but they're no where near the amount of people interested to make it. How can I learn this intense, beautiful, language??

Iceland really be out here like "Hey what should we call this place?" Friend drunk off his mind: Fghndfgnmdcyhadfkjcfhblidfbhj "Fascinating! You're a genius! We'll pronounce it as 'Farland'." But for real Icelandic is a beautiful language stemming from Old English / Old Norse and it's country is just as beautiful. BTW I legit had to smack my keyboard to make this joke.

Does the "r" always have this "th" like sound if it's at the end of a word? For example when you say "Þingvellir"?

The 'r' that you are hearing is actually just like the 'r' you hear in other parts of the word but just unvoiced (also she doesn't trill the final 'r' that much in her examples, so it is more of a voiceless tap/flap than an voiceless trill). Icelanders usually devoice sounds before a pause, which includes the 'r' the 'l' the double 'll' the soft 'g' and (less then those mention already, but still noticeable) the 'n' and 'm'. This devoicing also happens by sounds next to 'k/p/t' (and sometimes 's') in all but the Akureyri accent, and in all accents the sounds are devoiced at the beginning of a word when it has a 'h' before it (e.g. "hnota", "hraun", "hlín", all pronounced differently from "nota", "raun", "lín"). This is something that is very instinctive and natural to the common Icelander that most don't know the difference between their voiced and voiceless sonorants, but they still pronounce and hear them. As such, I can hear that final airy sound as a 'r', but for you it might sound a bit like a 'þ'. It isn't though, as if you would pronounce it as a 'þ', even if it sounds similar in your ears, an Icelander would hear it as pronounced wrong. The voiceless trill 'r' on wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiceless_alveolar_trill The voiceless tap/flap on wikipedia (the one she pronounces it more like): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiceless_alveolar_flap The trill 'r' is technically the more correct Icelandic 'r' overall, but it is common that it varies from individual to individual from a trill to a tap/flap, and even amongst the ones that use the trill there is a notable difference in how much they trill it. Either way, it doesn't really matter that much, but the voiceless trill IS more audible than the voiceless tap/flap. Hope this helps. Have a good day =D

Do you always pronounce a final r as English "sh" in Icelandic?

how come Seyðisfjörður isn't on either of the Places in Iceland lessons?

Why would Vopnafjörður sound like "...rthes" is its ending instead or R? "Vohpnafjortherrr" is how I would expect it to sound yet its pronounced like "Vohpnajforthes" - is the R pronounced differently if it's in the end of a word?
@ThorirPP
@ThorirPP 6 жыл бұрын
It isn't pronounced with an "s" like sound like you hear it as. "r" before a pause (i.e. at the end of a word followed by no other word/sound) is most often devoiced, and the sound you are therefore hearing is simply a voiceless "r" (the same sound as the "hr" in "hraun" and "hrafn", also appears when "r" is next to a "p", "t" or a "k" as in "orka"). This sound is clearly heard as "r" for any Icelander, but for people unused to voiceless sonorants it can sound like anything from a "sh" sound to a "th/þ" sound. For a more detailed explanation see my answer to Valokyas comment about him hearing the "r" at end of the words sound like a "th".
