To quote a very wise man (myself): "The road to fluency in a foreign language is paved with lots of embarassing misunderstandings and awkward silences" 😉 I'm not a native English speaker either but it was pretty easy to learn. Now working on Japanese it's a whole different level of difficult to make the jump to a language that's completely unrelated to my native one.

@@jcudejko Thanks for the compliment. My native language is German, so I think I had an easier time learning it than many due to how closely it is related to English.

If you want to improve in a language, using it is the best way to do it. Studying theory is good to gain a better understanding of the language which can help when you come across unknown words and also makes sentence structures more natural. For conversations, there's no better way to improve than simply speaking a lot.

Although I have had prior background with romaji due to memorizing anime openings, I think the largest improvement and step towards my current fluency level in Japanese (I haven't gotten it tested yet, but I've counted once before and I think I only know maybe 300 kanji characters or something, so still not that fluent) was also vtuber stream chats, and google translating them. I can't believe how practically 90% of the Japanese slang I know have been taught to me via chat just spamming those words, when I first learned online Japanese lingo it was like Japanese doubled for me or something.

That's amazing!! I'm so happy you weren't scared to learn English. When talking to friends in Japan, I'm often scared of saying something that would make them sad because of my weak Japanese skill.
