The fact that bleach's technique mechanics are based on how much respect the sword has for its owner. Ichigo made what little respect Zangetsu has for him worked.

We are talking about White. His whole identity was "stolen" from yuhwach. Ichigo was told the basics of a zanpakuto that there's supposed to be one spirit. So when white manifested during ichigo's fights with the captains, he started to feel uncomfortable with his (white) existence akin to a virus. Honestly, bleach s Abridged is the best way to explain white's and ichigo's relationship. The only other example of my point is comparing ichigo's relationship with Zangetsu to Kenpachi to Nozarashi. SPOILERS STARTING NOW. Kenny gained not only shikai but also bankai in just a few days in between. Why? Because Kenny already had the love and affection of his sword via yachiru, his lieutenant/daughter figure. Like his riatsu Kenny is dense, so he wouldn't even notice until later.

Ichigo and Kenpachi are two of the only humans I know who actually have death as their ultimate weapon. One's got a bloodlusted demon, the other is constantly getting led into a fight with the aura of death as his best weapon. These two are both powerful enough to rip apart the gates of Hell and the Soul Society single handedly with no difficulty.

Every time I see these old episodes I get sad that Ichigo never ever swung or spun his sword around by the strap again. He does it when saving rukia... to flex or something idk, and I think he does it one other time. Would be cool if he did that more often it's a badass move. Even in his ""bankai"" it still has a small chain at the end of the hilt.
