This is just what i need! I'm trying to minimize my radio equipment (running out of space) and whith this mod, i can remove the cb (older, big station model) I bought the 705 for it's size and HF/vhf/uhf combination, adding cb capability is just awesome! Thanks Andy! ❤ Subscribed!

I can confirm that this works. I used my solder station with an extra-fine-point tip at 700 degrees with an exactor knife and a magnifying glass-lamp (LED) to heat up the diode-spec on the lower left bank and was able to lift one end of the diode. I put everything back together and worked like a champ. I'll be posting some pics to FB soon

did this to my 7300 ... i recommend to use filter3 on FM because otherwise deviation is too large for most CB radios. You can store the channels in memory and have a very fast channel scan and can use the buttons on the mike for switching channels .. cheers! very nice setup!

I have an Icom IC-718 and an Icom IC-728, both full coverage HF ham radios. The 718 is a fairly new radio, has been around more than 20 years, but you can still find them new. I understand they are being discontinued. The 728 is a much older radio, last made in 1992. They are both much larger and heavier than the IC-705. They are intended to be used as base stations. I consider the 728 the best radio, it has a triple conversion superheterodyne receiver, something you just don't see anymore. It does not have menus and is not programmable. Both put out 100 watts max. The 728 has what is known in the U.S. as a MARS mod, which allows it to work on 11 meters SSB, both transmit and receive. The 718 can be converted, but it is much harder to do, and I don't want to ruin it. I would never try what you just did. Good way to ruin an almost $1400 radio.

The last time I check channel 19 in the United States is at a frequency of 27.185 MHz. Back in the mid to late 1970’s I knew what the frequencies were for each of the 40 channels at that time!

It's easier to just crush the zero ohm resistor with a thin pair of snips..That's the way I've always done wide banding on mine,, that way you still have the solder pads in place should you want to add a blob of solder to return it back to amateur bands only..

I took a flat soldering tip and filed a U in it, because of that I easily soldered the SMD diode out of my Kenwood. Regards Rob

I have to admit, I would be nervous as hell doing this to my IC-705 ! I can build kits with SMT. I really like your confidence tho and its very interesting. I think I'll keep to my CRT SS6900N for 10m and 11 meters.

Cheers matey , not sure I would be confident enough to take a chance messing with the 705 inners, but was good to watch, I’m literally back to radio this year, used to have a CB in the 80s, an old maxcom 4e lol, got my ham licence in March and got a bit bored with Ham so bought a Randy 3, just need to get an antenna outside , daft question coming up, could I use a mag mounted antenna in my loft, I wanted to buy the Sirio 5000, would it work? I’m sure the SWR would be all over the place, I almost pressed the buy button earlier but held back, all the best mate

I wonder if the manual has details of what diodes do what frequencies. Back in the 70s the Icom IC 240 used the same diode synthesiser control system to activate channels

No, the screws are not left-hand threaded. Parts of the vid are L-R reversed. The board closeup appears to be correct. But nice to see the insides of the '705! 73s, N2GX

I use mini wire snips and just cut it with a vaccume running along side it...... diode will just shatter and all bits just get sucked up...... This stops the risk of any heat damade to the rest of the board and is the safest way......

There you go he says and zooms right in on lots of rows of diodes. There it is you can see where I removed it, but no we couldn’t. All we could see was a mass of electronic components. You should have circled it, der!

no need to de-solder .just use jewelers small flat head the diodes pop right off slide up under and just the slightest twist and there gone.I was done in like 10 minutes start to finish.

Sounds good nice little mod, I have two Handheld CB radios I will have to bring them back to life and see if any body is in my area not used them for years as nobody has been on.

Enable the Active Noise Filter to lose some of that noise.

Any idea what is the bandwidth on the euro version compared to the USA version. Is there a mod to open up the USA frequencies which are from 440 to 449 MHz?

Does anyone know the difference between the USA and EU 705's, both with this mod? The EU version is less money ordering it from overseas even though I'm in the USA. No seller here knows even the big one.. Tryin to save a buck on the radio for a tuner. Great video by the way!

This is were the x6100 shines. No need to take apart. Just reprogram and away you go.

There's a catch. In the U.S. and some other countries, its 4 watts max when using the citizen's band radio service on FM and AM, but 12 on Single Sideband. Does the radio know to lower output, or do you just have to be careful?

There is No Reason that hf rigs cannot have an am and fm 5 watt, 12 watt ssb, 27 mhz cb band mandatory, in the radio...paying over $600 for a radio should give at least full access to cb channel 9, which is monitored by police, and 19 is the other ultimate channel. Then need a separate license for gmrs...sillyness. The radios do look fun to collect.

Here in OZ we so needed to have CB UHF 470-480, what was Icom thinking..

I'm looking at getting into radios, don't really know were to start but I will say I laughed at the end of the video as I'm also a synth man. Like I can see you're a Roland fan. I had a Roland w30 years ago and more recently a JDXi and still have the MX1 mixer from the aira line. I've gone full Analogue lately. Must be some crossover there with how the mind works. Anyway cool video man. Subscribed and hopefully I'll figure this game out at some point.
