In this video, I will show you how I interfaced my 7100 with the Mobilinkd bluetooth TNC wireless to my PC to send emails on 144Mhz. Check out the links below.

Good video - one of the reasons I love my Kenwood TH-D74, it has a TNC built in, no additional hardware required.

Eric, great video! I use just the USB cable for winlink, soundmodem and direwolf TNCs. I had to write a custom app to key the radio though. Keep up the god work!

RMS express for winmore & winlink works awesome, especially on HF where no other network is necessary, slow yes, but no infrastructure needed.

I thought the IC-7100 had a built in sound card. One USB cable for cat control and audio interface. Why use the Mobilind?

This system totally uses the internet...unless you're sending an email over winlink to someone local..... you're in Fla. I'm in NJ.... if you sent one to me it could not get here without the internet the way things are set up, and the lack of aprs/packet infrastructure

I didn't find if the 7100 has a cross band repeater function on analog. Fairly new ham here. Have a few radios but I'm not wanting to limit myself. I have a yaesu ft8900, old 2 channel 2 meter Motorola Maxon, 25 watts i think, and 3 baofeng UV5R ht's. Haven't learned anything about yaesu fusion, and a SDR that I play with that will run on my galaxy S10 phone, but it's a power hog, it pulls around 450 mAh. I want to help keep ham radio alive by getting our youth involved starting with the local boy scouts packs, and that's where the baofeng UV5R ht's come in along with my laptop and SDR. I'm also a volunteer storm spotter. Our city emergency manager signs onto our local ham radio club repeater, coordinates our position, relays our observations to the national weather service and sounds the sirens if we observe any tornadoes. I have not participated in a amateur radio emergency service drill yet. Thoughts? 73 KG5ZEF Ray

I have come back to this and wonder - has anyone done TNC3 with ID-5100A? Would the data jack work, or would you need a specialized cable to switch between the mic and the tnc?

Hi Eric,, Hope you see this... Great stuff.. Keep up the good work... Very informative. You mentioned using the Mobilinkd with your Xeigu X5105... What cable did you use, I think it's a "8 Pin" mini din...?? The 5105 is becoming really popular.. Any chance of a short youtube on the X5105 settings and doing data modes and include the Mobilinkd :) :) :)

I did try the Mobilinkd with my Yaesu FT-65R but I couldn't send any emails. It would constantly lock up and loose data. I don't know what the issue was, maybe the HT is too slow when switching from TX back to RX? APRS works perfectly fine with the same radio

Hey Eric, thanks for the vid, great as usual! ;) 2 things: I have a vid on my phone of the Noise Blanker in action if you want to see it (in the previous video you mentioned it was kinda useless) and regarding the mobilinkd, can you use this for FT8 and the likes? The body of my radio is in the back of my ute, can't be bothered pulling 8m usb cables haha

So you can send data without using cell phone towers? Would this work in a natural disaster if the internet is down? Does it require a repeater or can it do it simplex?
@WadeAbout

As it doesn’t do 300baud I doubt it’s HF worthy. It’s the second vid you have mentioned it in but it won’t go slow enough for HF. Unless v3 will - I would buy - 2.2 doesn’t go below 1200 - I know because I asked. VK1MIC

G'day Eric. Love the vids. Question about having noise reduction on while using digital over FM. General I have NR off when using digital modes on HF SSB so it doesn't have a negative impact, especially on weak signal modes. Does it not matter when using FM or because it's not a weak signal mode? Cheers mate 73. Lance VK6LMK

I am fairly new to HAM. Just got this radio. I am stll waiting on the 6 foot antenna. Can I turn on the radio without the antenna? I remember burning the power unit in a hand held doing that and I definitely don't want to blow this $1,000 piece of art. Thanks!

By now you have discovered that it is harmless to turn on / power on a radio without antenna but you should not attempt to transmit.

Eric, outstanding videos. There is a procedure on the web to use Winlink on VHF with the IC 7100 without a separate TNC. This procedure uses the following 1. CAT7200 program to key the radio 2. Soundmodem by UZ7HO 3. Winlink Express software Are you familiar with this setup? Been trying to get it to work to no avail. Maybe a pretty cool future video topic to help the IC 7100 use community. Cheers 73 AE0BE

Hi Eric, Great videos. Just a quick comment to say no external interface is required, all data/SSTV/packet etc can be done via USB. Also, how to use DSTAR on the 7100, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9hdmNdqzb-nn2g.html Cheers, Mike G1ZRN.

So you make a video to show people how something works, and that's cool. But you have a low battery causing lots of typos, and then you send a message that can't be sent for whatever reason... My question is: would it really be that hard to simply reshoot the video and this time make sure all those things work? It would have made this video so much more useful to me to not have all these unnecessary distractions polluting the process. If you aren't making enough $ from this channel to make it worth the time, maybe this is why. If you ARE making enough,,, well, then, why?
