Icom IC-PS30 Power Supply Repair. Lots of bad parts go poof!

Күн бұрынI got this one in along with an Icom IC-471H 430MHz All Mode transceiver for repair. The power supply did not work at all and in this video we find out why. A perfect example of a cascade failure. It is a long video so grab a cold snack or two and family sized bag of chips and enjoy.

Reminds me of the first ICOM I had.. a 2m mobile TR-7400A. Still have it but its' not worked since the late 90s. But I still enjoy my R71A.

Hard to believe this thing is from the 80s. Some of Icoms stuff has held up well. I have an IC25 that works great.

@@AERVBlog yeah I have had plenty of radios from the 80s still going strong. I know people with newer radios that don't work all that well.

@@gbowne1 I have an FT-757GX that I believe rivals most newer radios as far as receive goes. I use it for digital modes.

Did the cooling fan ever get up to full speed? Hard to tell at the end how fast it was spinning. Makes me wonder if it overheated due to a fan issue.

No. That fan was just toast. In fact the whole thing ended up being not economical to repair since it kept taking out that low value resistor. I ended up replacing the whole works with a 25A Mean Well PS and building a circuit for the current meter. It all works great now and if it does suffer over current it just shuts down gracefully instead of blowing up. I really hate these bathtub switch mode PSs.
