ICON QCON PRO X/XS FIRMWARE & FREEZING - ISSUES & WORKAROUND FOR MAC STUDIO (M1 MAX, LOGIC PRO X)

Күн бұрынThanks to Icon Tech support and the Icon Facebook user group pages for assistance. Here I address and resolve recent issues with with my QCon Pro X /XS system on Apple Studios M1 Max using Logic Pro X on OS Monterrey. I had trouble performing firmware upgrade on the Qcons using iMap V2.33 and the Icon boards freezing while playback of logic sessions.
Icon Support advised me to use the iMap (utilizing their Secret T method) and I was finally able to get firmware re-installed on my Pro X. and through trial and error, i found a workaround for freezing Qcon Pro X & XS units using an OWC TB Dock.
IMPORTANT NOTE: ****QCON XS EXTENDERS MUST BE SET UP IN LOGIC AS MACKIE EXTENDERS, NOT MACKIE CONTROL AS DESCRIBED ON THE ICON PRO AUDIO WEBSITE. ONLY THE MAIN QCON PRO X IS SET UP AS A MACKIE CONTROL.
IN LOGIC PRO MENU - LOGIC PRO - CONTROL SURFACE - SET UP - NEW - INSTALL
QCON PRO X - MACKIE CONTROL
QCON XS 1 - MACKIE EXTENDER 1
QCON XS 2 - MACKIE EXTENDER 2
AND SO ON.......
I do not own an Icon One hub, so it could possibly be another workaround. The one Hub is $250CDN and if it won't work, please be aware that dealers will not return the unit without a 15-25% restocking fee here in Canada and shipping costs are incurred by the customer, so there is risk to purchasing one.
The OWC TB dock is working for me now but i hope this issue can be resolved somehow so I do not need to tie up a TB4 port on my Mac studio.

I got my QCon Pro X in 2018 mainly to control my DAW (Samplitude Prox 3) in windows 10. Thanks for the mackie-protocol this system was running fine. Then we needet to order the overlays and to upgrade our firmware..... The firmware update was no problem but my Qcon Pro X`s midi-mapping was new and it took me some time to get used to it. But now I´m a happy camper and I love my system more than ever!

I just bought a new p1-m had the same issues as you, not connecting and freezing bought the owc thunderbolts and now it works, the only thing it will not do is update on my new m2 Mac…used an older intel Mac for that…so glad I stumbled across your video, just thought I’d post this here for anybody who has the latest controller. Thank you for this video. Icon pro x and 4 xs extensions are working fine with no freezing after buying the powered hub you suggested. Even after 10 hours. Works fine.

Icon now offers a new hub called the CH 01 hub from their website and it’s like $20-30 bucks shipped. You may want to buy that and return the expensive powered dock. I have done this and it works great! Cheers

Hey Rob, just wanted to say thanks. I was having a similar experience. I recently implemented a Mac Studio and had the freezing issue. I actually have a OWC dock already on my system so it was very easy for me to swap the cables around, and now all the issues with my Qcon pro X are gone. BTW I’m using ProTools 2022.9 and I have the Qcon pluged into a OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock so it’s not just Logic, it appears to be a hardware issue

Im a bit of a techy, built several computers including a mini pc. Sounds like your dawing too much voltage than your computer is designed to handle. Having too many pieces of hardware plugged in may flood your computer with too much voltage causing the device to go haywire and bug out in various ways. Think of it as tripping the circut breaker in your house except its your PC. When your PC hits its voltage ceiling and goes over its stock voltage capacity it will cause your PC to in some cases disconnect active operations effectivly freezing the device without flashing BSOD screen or shutting off your computer. This is a safety feature built in the mother board to prevent the user from damaging their computer. This makes sense as to why the qcon works when plugged into a powered hub in your case because the hub is acting strictly as data transfer instead of sharing power distribution directly with the computer. I have seen this many times with over taxing lower performance builds. Since your not a techy then I would advise against tinkering around the bios to increase the voltage increments although this could be a possible solution. I am not experienced with Mac but ive heard people having more issues then with PC builds and I noticed in the latest release notes for the firmware something about now supporting Catalina and certain AMD PC builds.

I have had this issue as well with my recently bought P1-M. Now it is good that this could fix it, and I thank you for sharing it. However, I still see that the responsibility lies with Icon Pro Audio.

@@MankyFrilla ya I have sent Dave advice on the icons on a few of his vids on how to set up and the challenges with it but he seems to ignore it. I’m thinking icon is sponsoring him or they gave it to him free. He hasn’t acknowledged any of the firmware or m1 max studio issues but he did message me that he is aware of my videos and knows about the Facebook user groups.

I haven't tried my icon yet as im in the middle of tracking and im so annoyed with im leaving it till im done - though last night 'Harrison Mix Bus' sent me a new offer on their latest version 8 for 29 bucks and amazingly they said on the email their working special with ICON so that swayed me to upgrade though I use LOGIC, Studio One and HMBus which if I must say 'its the warmest' Daw out there if dare I say analogy? is a thing? But as I must have also connected via another address the crafty blighters offered me the same deal for TWICE the price!! I was pissed but being a capitalist slave I took the chowder . . I will say this - Give it a go on a trial, its the most console console out there and based on the original . . I got it for peanuts about 3 years ago as no one seems to buy it - dude its blazing for tracking and has great FLAC, OGG VORBIS EXPORTS ETC The plugins for it they do sell ya for pennys and the GUI is crap looking but the user experience is very good . . id recommend it to anyone , especially with all this' is it analogue' baloney - And no ones talking about it? anyway brother try the new VERSION 8 and don't get confused by the MIXBUS 32C with is a CHANEL STRIP -And a damn good one ate that . . SO Just mind its Harrison DAW V.8 with is just out . .Cheeers dude

i have icon pro x and 3 x pro xs . I paid almost 3000 euros for this product and I swear I couldn't use it properly. There's a lot to tell, but I'll keep it short: I will never buy another Icon product again

Sounds like I should look at a competitor to Icon for my next DAW Controller, as I am on a Studio and using Logic.

Lots of studio users have had zero issues, I personally know someone with a Studio with M1 Ultra chip and no issues. Icon are working on a solution I’m told, so maybe be worth waiting to see what they come up with! It’s a great board to work on, love mine.

It's the USB hub, it needs a more powerful hub that can deliver undisturbed power to the unit.

Yes it turned out that Icon knew this was a problem and had developed a new CH1 hub to correct this problem.

What could a dock possibly do that a direct connection not be doing? I'm a windows guy but I know when a port gets overloaded it will shut the port down but why will the hub keep going? Maybe its a power drain to the usb's? Interesting. I see that the hub looks like it is powered? Is it a possible lack of enough power could be the culprit?

Icon figured it out, there was an issue with usb connection with M1 computers. They developed a new CH1 hub that fixed the issue which is great. Have had zero issues since.

I never had issues before with freezing until I started using the M1 Max Mac studio. I was also advised to never update firmware unless you absolutely have to which was the perceived state I was in when they started freezing. Otherwise I wouldn't have ever touched it! I won't ever again try to update firmware on the boards, that's for sure.

your usb problem could be a power management issue form the MAC, you should try to look in the power section if there is a setting regarding usb

I did investigate that as well. USB Works fine with anything else. Turns out there is a known issue with Mac studios with the M1 Max chip connecting with the pro x system. We just didn’t know it at the time. icon is working and testing a permanent solution at this time.

the problem i see is, Lack of power source from the usb port in the mac studio, that controller has to get back in.

I have the intel computer and my device ( Qcon Pro G2) have blank blue screen, this is the second time to get this! First time I sent my device to the service center. But second time!!! Hope you help me get the firmware back

Have you tried using the Icon USB hub? It is an extra expense but it might solve the connection problems.

USB C can handle more throughput and your OWC Dock can handle all the Icons connected to power them properly. The USB A ports on the back of the Mac Studio aren't as powerful as the USB C ports.

Well that makes sense! thank you. I just cant figure out why on my M1 Mac mini the USB A port worked no problem, yet on the newer Mac studio USB A port it won't work and stalls. that's why I was thinking its chip related from M1 to M1 Max possibly.

It’s a great system, just be aware that support from Icon is not what it could be. That’s the biggest complaint from users. The system itself is wonderful to work with when it’s operating as it should!

I like the price point of this product and with meter bridges its great value. But I wonder if this has stabilised with its firmware of late.

It has definitely stabilized. And Icon now have a new hub for $20 to correct the freezing issues some of us faced with the M1 chips in the Mac Studio units. Also found recently that part of my problem was Logic Pro itself. I had a corrupt file somewhere and finally had to reinstall the DAW completely and everything works like a beast now!

@@citytonightproductions Yes! Another user was complaining of the exact same thing and it looked to me purely a power supply issue. Its daunting to ask a single USB to power 32 channels let alone 8/16! Have you tried their firmware pathways? How is the experience with upgrading firmware?

@@ratheepanraj don’t upgrade firmware unless you absolutely have too. That’s a good rule of thumb with any hardware I find. These controllers are rock solid in construction and very intuitive. They make mixing a lot of fun, you use your ears more and having hands of faders and pan knobs is fantastic!

Contact Icon support first, they will help you get the board back up and running. There’s a few steps in IMap that they will advise of. You will need to have an intel based computer to do the firmware, M1 units are not compatible yet for using to upgrade. Stupid I know. If you don’t have an intel computer, and you have the blue screen on your units, most likely you will be shipping back to Icon at your cost for them to repair.

It was not working properly, freezing all faders intermittently. The new Mac studio wasn’t playing nice with the units.

Nope, I’ve fully tested it with all kinds of other media and it works perfectly. Only with the icon system it freezes

@@citytonightproductions That's because the problem seems to be the amount of power that port is actually providing. The Icons need much more power than regular devices. You can test this by getting a regular type A hub with external power (most hubs have a power supply input, you can get only the power supply unit from Amazon if you already have a type A hub), and try it on your type A port in the Mac. If it works, then it's a power issue. Maybe Apple reduced the supplied power on that port to the bare acceptable minimum.

@@Zarabozo regular A type hubs work no problem with Mac studio. I did try the one hub from Icon and it was still an issue, so the TB dock was the only work around. All 3 units worked with my M1 mac mini. The Mac studio just doesn’t seem to play nice with the icons.
