Fun Fact: the character designs are all based on the portraits of Gustav Klimt. The King and Queen are from the painting “the kiss” while Gargona is literally the lady with snakes. The world building itself includes the blue spirals and triangles always present in Klimts works.

I remember watching this show once, and Gargona drove me crazy. Possibly because I could and still can only watch it in my native language (Danish), and her Danish voice is honestly horrible to listen to (in my opinion).

What I always got from the show growing up is that the world wasn't exactly real? I think Mia's parents _made_ that world for her, as well as the bracelet, and the reason it expands alongside her is because it revolves around her. It starts basic, elves vs weird woman, then expands as Mia explores. Like a minecraft map, it only loads in more chunks as you venture into those chunks. That's always how I understood it, at least.

Actually, Mia and the other ''elves'' ARE actually fairies, it's just that in here Europe, we use the terms ''elf'', ''fairy'' and ''pixie'' interchangeably to describe magical hominids

here in germany it's different. we use the word fee for pixie and fairy (hominids with wings) and elf for yeah elf (like the ones from lotr)

Mia and Me was my ultimate escapism show. I would constantly dream about being Mia and having the ability to travel into this fantasy world, especially flying, I wanted wings SO BAD. That moment when Mia finally manages to fly properly was EUPHORIC and it still comes back to me every now and then

I used to love this show so much. Me and my best friend used to be the 'imaginary magic world' children and this really fueled my imagination. Maybe it's partly because of the fact it's both real actors and animation, which made it seem so real for me. And the art is just stunning.

The creator of the show, Gerhard Hahn is german, and in german the word "Elfen" refers more commonly to those little insect-winged people, so that’s why they’re called elves instead of faeries or pixies here.

On your point of the "cutesy girly stuff", you were right, like i also felt weird watching the show after that bc i was in my "im not like other girls" era (also the girls my grade suddenly decided that cartoon were for kids and they were big girls now watching big girl shows like zoey 101). Fun fact: In my first language, Polish, Mia and Me is called Mia i Ja. Mia i ja is pronounced Mya Iya, so it rhymes and even better, it sounds like kids pronouncing horse's neighing in Poland. Idk if it's a horse girl easter egg or if it's just an accidental thing, i love it though.

Something I didn’t realise when I first watched the show is that the visual style of Centopia is very heavily drawing from Gustav Klimt. The king and queen look like they’ve been ripped straight out of one of, if not his most famous work, the kiss. I’m really curious why they did this? It’s not everyday you see a kids show trying to mimic the aesthetic of an Austrian painter’s work. It might be something worth noting in your next video, because now my interest is piqued (that and because I never saw past the fist two seasons, but that’s besides the point).

The whole unicorn harem thing is actually based on real horses, especially in the wild. There is one main stallion and he has many mares, but he usually has one main mare and they share responsibility. with the herd and protecting❤

Okay I kinda headcanon Violetta as gender noncom 'cuz like, her elf colorscheme and her elf look , compared to Mia and later Sara is more androgynous, and like her arc is could be interpreted as internalized Queerphobia, at first she bullied Mia because she liked fairies (Mia is somehow Queer (Bi in my headcanon) and even though Violetta also likes Fairies (is Queer) she was raised by her mother who is not encouraging imagination and wonder (is homophobic) and when she gets into Centopia (discovers a kind Queer community) she thinks "Hey, I like this" and her home life suck no matter what and her mother manipulated her into thinking that her father doesn't want to live with her (she lied abot Violetta's dad being homophobic) is like "screw it, I'm out of closet here and this place is great" but hey THAT'S JUST a silly little headcanon of mine

To put it in perspective, season 2 was produced and released at the same period Winx season 7 was. And both had circus clowns as vilains. One was just better integrated in the show and overall better executed, and it's not Brafilius.

Grew up on this show before I even got into Winx Club and it had me rewatching it over and over - being much older now, I can tell the problems but man, its easy too overlook when wearing the nostalgia glasses - also completely forgot about the love stories in this show besides emo tarzan because they did not interwst me at all and I dont think I even picked up that there was a spat over Mo in season 1 as a kid. Edit: yes I was totally a horse girl

I remember watching this show when I was in elementary although I never got the chance to see past s1 and I'm happy that it still holds up decently today! Btw if you're interested in another rainbow show I suggest Monster allergy, long only 2 seasons. For any Italians interested in rewatching it it's fully free in Italian here on KZfaq (except for the finale of s2 that for some reason was copyright striked)

I think the “she’s an elf but she has wings?” thing can be explained with the context that it’s a Belgian show! I’m Dutch but we share a lot of things with Belgium and “elf” here is a very generic term that could, depending on prefix, suffix, diminutive etc be a lot of things. It covers anything from classic elves to pixies and more, and also overlaps with the word “fee”, thus also pulling in things like fairy godmothers and evil fairies such as Maleficent, hell it can even be expanded to just mean “sorceress”. It’s a very broad term, but basically Mia being called an elf wouldn’t be weird for Belgian audiences, it’s just awkward for the translation!

It's actually a coproduction between Germany, Italy and Canada (only the company that owns the rights is belgian). And in Germany it's similar! I actually went to look this up and found out something interesting about these words' history: The german "Fee" comes from medieval french, and in Germany it came to mean something between a sorceress and a nymph. The french "faerie"/"féerie" was adopted by late medieval England and used to desctibe the realm of the little people that Chaucer already called "elfs". During elizabethan times "faerie" and "elf" became more or less interchangable and were used this way by Shakespeare. During the 18th century, a lot of his works were translated into german, and since the word "Fee" had such a stark difference in meaning from the english "faerie", most translators used the word "Elfe" instead. This word became the most used when referring to the Little People that the english ended up calling "faeries". Only in recent years, with english and american works getting translated with "faeries" as "Feen", or Tolkien-inspired fantasy often using tall, humanoid elves, this imagery changed .

I have been waiting for someone to actually talk about this show. It was abut out of my age range when it came out but I still enjoyed it for what it was. Also I rewatched the first few episodes and I think the book is more like an interactive video game than an actual magical artefact? (Ignoring the fact that it literally makes your physical body disappear when you're using it) So I guess the whole "Mia is the special" thing and everyone just going with it makes more sense when you consider that her parents designed it that way. Takes a lot of the stakes out of the conflict though. (And questioning the whole "we don't know where the parents are" thing: Don't we find out early on that they're dead or am I mixing it up with another show?)

I know the theme song by heart to this day! Season 2 was my favourite, new characters and a bully redemption arc is all it takes for me. I remember I was very upset when they changed the actress for S3, I think I also stopped watching the show after that. Sometimes I still wonder about the relationship of the main characters, Mia, Yuki and Mo would make the absolute power poly couple.

Oh boy I waited for this deep dive for so long because this show have been living in my head rent free! Let me start with the fact that I love the fairy world's portrayal being art nouveau. There are Klimt inspired designs, because YES, the patterns and the world is based off of famous Klimt paintings. As a ex-art student, when Klimt was brought up, I realized why were these designs so familiar. Also... fun fact, art nouveau is a pretty decorative style, so because of this a lot of characters wear spiraling clothing, golden jewellery and decorative hair pieces. I suppose Mia's parents were art nouveau enthusiasts.

i had to stand up and take multiple deep breaths when i saw the thumbnail. to say this show was my childhood is an understatement so it's nice to get an outside perspective because without you pointing it out, i never would've noticed that centopia is pretty much girls only and i do agree, that the writing is average for most of the seasons. also don't they say that mias parents are dead in the first episode? and Panthea DOES order her servants to spread them around edit: i think i'm one of the few fans of this show that hated horse growing up edit: is it made clear that Ono had a harem? because if yes, then the localised version i watched changed them to be his friends

10:07 I'm pretty sure I remember that in the episode where Panthea gets the thrumptus (or however it's spelled) she gave each of her servants a few parts and said they have to hide them all around Centopia so the thrumptus can never be rebuild again.

Okay, the "It's just for kids" thing is NOT an excuse for lazy writing. Kids shows that have things "Just Happen" without reasons behind them lead to kids that accept things without wanting to know the reasons behind them. Kids shows should have BETTER writing and be held to a HIGHER standard than those for adults, because those stories form the foundation of those childrens' lives and minds and moral systems! Hold them to higher standards! Hold them to the HIGHEST standards!

OH MY GOD I LOVED THIS SHOW WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I REWATCHED IT SO MANY TIMES AGHHH I'm honestly tempted to rewatch it yet again just cause its so nostalgic for me, and the theme song will forever be engraved into my brain. One of the things that bugged me when i was younger is the different VAs in the later seasons. Like, ik they just weren't able to keep them all... but Fuddle's new VA just DIDNT sound like him at all qwq

I went to school in Florence Italy and was classmates with that bully girl! Some of these scenes were even filmed in my school during summer vacation! Most of the live action characters in the show are all from my school. My theater teacher was the one that casted them

I liked the show, but the Quality for each season kept going down hill well except for season one and two, i would've have that magic bracelet be run by magic itself, but it has a time limit and she would need to let it charge on its own without using it or she may break it and may never return. Its that simple.

Like you said the show went straight to the adventure part, it wanted to keep the child audience engaged. I think that was my favorite part, I missed the lore too but I appreciated that they did as little in the real world as possible because they wanted to get to Centopia’s plot just as much as everyone else.

omg that thumbnail awakened a memory in me I totally forgot about this series! yet it definitely had a major impact on my psyche -- like you said, there are a lot of shows like this one but my fairy-fantasy daydreams were most similar to Mia & Me, now that I remember it. however I think I might have skipped past the live action later in the show because I found it so boring lol -- i only watched the first season i'm pretty sure haha.
