IT'S BACK BABY! Jocko's 1982 Red Toyota Hilux is back and it's about to be better than ever!
The poor girl has been neglected for too long and it's time to complete the restoration to her former glory. From tired old rig to a timeless classic!
Jock's been working on it in his shed for the last year (when he isn't out on trips) - putting in a new engine, fixing up a second hand tub, completely pulling out the dash, transfer case mount and mocking up a custom gearbox crossmember!
Jocko shares where he is at with the restoration, what work has already been completed and what the final plan for the old girl is!

Yes more realistic. I just finished basically the same build in my shed. All DIY. It is a hard slog. No engine swap as I kept mine completely original. Looked like it just rolled of the factory floor in the end. Got a lot of attention everywhere I drove.

HOT TIP! When cutting and grinding where glass could be damaged, spray glass with lanolin spray. It will stay on for weeks and grinding sparks won't stick to the glass. Also lano is great for making rubber soft and black. Washes off with soapy water. Hot tip no2, when painting in the engine bay and not removing wires, hoses etc you can wrap them with tin foil. Much quicker and easier than masking tape.

Older 3RZ motors are underrated. A little motor that loves to work, and loves to rev. Doesn't walk up steps like a 3 liter td but a little clutch tap will get you there. We went from 3RZ to 1KZ and I would go back in a heartbeat, the 3RZ is so much more a driver's engine.
@jasonmanley5287
@jasonmanley5287 2 жыл бұрын
The 3rz-fe is a phenomenally reliable motor. I had one with 300,000 miles that ran like new. If Toyota could build a frame that didn’t rust in two, I’d still be driving it.

We had an old yellow Hilux on our cattle station, it literally rusted in half while driving it, but it still kept going because the tray hit the back of the cab preventing the snapped middle section of the chassis from dragging the ground, looked ridiculous driving around. from then on it was known as the BananaLux

The 3RZ engine is an excellent choice. I have it in my US Hilux (a.k.a. Tacoma) and thrash it regularly. It was also found in the Surf/4Runner, so if it is capable in that vehicle with all that weight from the factory, then you know it's good. Won't get anywhere fast, but you will get there everytime.

Great to see you are going period correct Jocko. Love period correct vehicles, they will catch the eye of almost everyone. Doesn't matter if you have to make stuff work. That is All part of the rebuild. My Dad built a Toyota Stout from two 1971s and a 1964 using parts from all 3 . Very Cool stuff.

I have to say, well done Jocko. I have rebuilt alot of the late 1960s and early 1970 ford F-100 trucks. First thing I always did was remove the bed and cab. Then rebuilt the rolling chassis. This gave me all the room I needed and kept me off the ground. Also a cab body sitting on blocks is easy to work on. Keep going with the build mate. It looks like a great project.

I did an engine swap on a 85 CJ-7 and put a 5.2l magnum V8 and one of the biggest things that helped me was to go over the wiring for both vehicles and make a list of all the wires that needed to be hooked up and then slim down the harness a bit only after i got it running so that i could make sure I didn't make any mistakes. Also, for the rust on the frame a good rust converter can really do wonders with just a light cleaning on the frame to get rid of dust dirt and grime and really cut down on work you need to do to make it look good and be protected from rust. All you need to really do is spray the frame down with some kind of powerful degreaser and then let it sit for a bit and pressure wash it off. then as long as you don't have any super flaky rust on the frame then it is ready to paint.

Coming from united states, you're right about the motors. Not a bad choice and dosen't make it any less reliable or capable. We don't get the fancy toyota diesel here but the tacoma/pickups still get the highest mileage over other 4wds and is still one of the most used 4wd rigs here in the U.S along with other toyotas like the 4runner/surf! My first pickup here in the USA was a 1979 Toyota 4WD long bed pickup with the 20R engine and a 4 speed manual. Bought it in 1993 or 94 with 80K miles for $5k and traded it in in 98' for a 1988 pickup with 88K and a 22R engine. I put about 220K miles on that 1979 and the dealer gave me $5k (what I paid for it) in trade for the 1988. The 1979 was White with blue stripes, the 1988 was Blue with silver stripes. Loved those trucks, but I moved on to 4Runners after that for reliable 4WD in winter conditions.
