ID Tips: Neotropic Cormorant vs. Double-crested Cormorant

Learn how to distinguish a Neotropic Cormorant from a Double-crested Cormorant. The Neotropic Cormorant is an uncommon visitor to the United States which sometimes flocks with other Cormorant species. Telling the two species apart can be different but with these tips, it will be much easier.

I'm such a bird geek that I literally cried when I saw my first Snowy owl near Bloomington Wisconsin a few winters back during a polar vortex. Keep up the great content!

We have the double crested in Austin, Tx right now. I just photoed some I saw at a quarry(now a small lake they call the quarry)

Just got into birding a few months ago. Watched this and then literally the next day noticed one of the cormorants at the park was smaller than the rest, decided to take a closer look, and ended up finding the first Neotropic ever reported in Tijuana on ebird. Wouldn't have even crossed my mind it was a different species since they're so similar. Had to convince myself I wasn't just looking at a weird DCCO because I definitely didn't expect to find one here the next day haha

This was very helpful! I saw neotropic cormorants in our local "duck pond" in a city park. Tucson, AZ.

I swear I saw a neotropic cormorant in Cambridge Wisconsin while canoeing down koshkonong creek in CamRock park today with my wife and kids. So mad I didn’t get a picture 😭
