Idaho BDR 2021: A Solo Journey

In August of 2021 I rode the Idaho Backcounty Discovery Route, or IDBDR, solo. The route runs along the length of Idaho from the borders of Nevada to Canada. I did the trip on my 2007 KLR650, camping most days.
Despite lots of road closures due to fires, and lots of smoke in the air, the ride was amazing.

Hey, I love seeing a gen 1 KLR still doing it. I love my 2015 gen 2, and am planning a TAT trip from CO to TN then FL next month. Felt for you on the two drops. These guys are not fun to pick up, but this is what separates us from the rest of the motorcycle world. Each big trip is a when never an if.

Nice video, that creek crossing brings back some memories when I crossed it a couple of years ago on my fully loaded weestorm the water was much higher and faster flowing, back then it took all 3 of us to walk each bike across. nice that your music wasn't way louder that your voice, good drone work without being to much, good camara work. we only made it as far as Lolo the snow got to deep. may get to finnish it this coming july or do the new WYBDR insted after doing the CDT....

As a gen 1 KLR rider from the desert backcountry and rimlands of Southern Africa, I found this resonant. Nothing like being out on your own in hillcountry and dropping your bike on technical roads with no one else around ...!

1st Gen KLR is an awesome bike for backroad travel. I love mine. I couldn't tell in the video if you were running a fork brace, but that combined with progressive rate fork springs completely transformed mine. So much better handling in the rough stuff. Thanks for sharing!

It was a pleasure watching the video. I thought your music choice was perfectly matched to how you approached the ride? Kinda relaxed, shit happens, roll with the punches vibe. I felt for you when it came to picking up the KLR. She’s a big girl naked, never mind loaded! The recap at the end of each day gave me a pretty good idea of what it was like and it was good to see that you don’t need the latest and greatest to do the trip. IBDR is on the bucket list for this Canadian once we can travel again. Thanks and safe travels.

Thanks, I appreciate the view and the comment! I just tried to pick music that fits the vibe of being out in the beauty of the world by yourself I guess, I'm glad it seemed to come across well! I dont think how new your bike is, or how many CC's it has makes a difference in how much fun you have. Adventure is about getting out there, whether or not your bike is shiny and new or not. Canada looks like an amazing place to ride as well! Banff is on my bucket list for when we can start going up there again!

Nice job on the solo effort! Great footage both go pro and drone! We rode north to south 5 years ago and got kicked out below lowman due to fire closures so want to come back and do the whole thing again. Passed this summer because of the smoke as the views of the mountain ranges are so great that is a big part of the ride. You missed some cool stuff up by blue cabin and on both sides of wallace but I see you found the train tunnels. Hopefully summer of 22, california won't be polluting north america with their annual forest fire festival and we can get a ride in!

I was super bummed about missing the blue cabin, it seems like a pretty iconic part of the ride. The train tunnels were super cool. The main route that parallels the tunnels was closed, but I wanted to ride them anyways so it worked out just fine for me. Fingers crossed for a better fire season this year!

Great job on the video. We did the Idaho BDR a few months ago but the fires were a real pain in the ass to negotiate. Can’t imagine doing it by myself. Did you have any breakdowns or any bike issues? Some of those areas are so remote I think being by myself would freak me out so I am impressed you did it by yourself.
@ParaMoto_ADV
@ParaMoto_ADV 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the fires really threw things off. Thankfully I am in Idaho so I can go back and do the sections I had to skip. I the only issue I had with the bike was the left foot peg. I had the bolts get stripped riding in Colorado last year, so I fixed it with helicoils before this trip. The helicoils failed day 3 of this trip, so I had to use bailing wire and zip ties to hold the foot peg on. For the most part it was fine, but I tried to avoid standing as much as I could to keep pressure off of it. Other than that the bike ran great. The KLR is a beast.

The KLR was a pretty perfect bike for this ride, I really couldn't have asked for anything more than it gave me. Doing Burnt Knob solo made me a bit nervous, but otherwise it wasn't bad. Part of the experience for me is the solitude, which is one of the reasons I love doing these trips solo. I have a Garmin InReach, which is some nice peace of mind out there.

Fantastic video friend!! I have the exact same plastic cargo carrier on my DR650, how does it hold up doing a BDR type ride? I was apprehensive to take it on anything crazy or technical like a BDR. I was nervous it being a cheap Amazon $50 carrier it would fall off midway through a BDR trip.
